Give Bethesda some love
Give Bethesda some love
I don't love Fallout. I hate it with a passion. So much so I spent 477 hours of the last 1,224 hours playing FO4, just so I can spend an average of 3 or 4 hours per day over the next couple years fixing their game for them by making mods.
Its a labor of hate, but someone's got to do it. Think of the http://tw.greywool.com/i/zm1J6.gif
I think Honest Hearts for Fallout New Vegas encapsulates my favourite things about Fallout and TES that no other game can match. Deciding all by yourself to travel to a strange land, one of many inside a great open world. Getting there and finding all sorts of strange cultures there, some in conflict with each other, some in conflict with the character that im playing, but they are at their heart a unique society that you get to learn all about through your time traveling their society. Talking to their leaders, seeing how they view the world, and taking up your weapon in a decision that bleeds with the ultimate authority in all things: The gun, the sword, the bow, or whatever you may be armed with. Take your weapon to those who would do you harm and make a lasting impact on the history of this society and the world that surrounds them. And then wander over the next hill, exiting their history, and doing it all over again with the next one, never leaving the world as you wander from place to place.
There may be other things that people like about the game, Im sure a lot of people enjoy the new shooter action in Fallout 4, but for me that entire bit of content with Zion and its beautiful vistas and unique cultures is exactly what I enjoy. No other type of game does it nearly as well. And from my first introduction with Morrowind around 2004, I knew that I was hooked.
Lots of reasons. For one Bethesda's ability to completely sidetrack me. I set out to do one thing and end up somewhere completely different.
Another thing is the random encounters, they bring lots of life to the gameworld.
To me its the world-building and the lore underpinning Fallout.
It WAS also the RPG elements where you could approach things diplomatically, brutally or stealthy, and FO4 does have some of that but its an element I miss dearly.
Still Fallout is among the best game series ever, as is TES, and its more so than the latter for the first reason...
I love Fallout 4, as a complete newbie to the Fallout franchise, because it gives me somewhat of 'true' freedom.
I love the fact that levels don't play a crucial role in the game *not perks - my lvl38 player is able to kill a lvl68 mutant where unlike most MMO's where this will not be possible.
I also love Fallout 4 because it gives me a good exploration experience.
The mood is right ("abandoned"/post nuke war world), the soundtrack is just fantastic (lots of nostalgia ringing tones there, under my wing wan ^ ).
I love Fallout 4, because it lets me be.. me.
The way the devs implemented the perks stats is unique enough to make me think I'm really playing what *I* want to play, unique in my own way. Mathematically speaking, with oh-so-many combinations to choose from, I'm not that far from the truth.
-rouvio.
Even with its flaws, it's hard to beat FO4's immersion level.
Not many games can burn up an afternoon (or indeed, an entire weekend) like a good Bethesda sandbox adventurer can.
Adventuring and exploration at its best. Role playing mechanics are below average though.
Been playing practically nonstop since release (work, sleep, and eating is just annoying ), and have my first char (my fifth) at 40+ level.
Killed off some Kelly dude at my first playthrough and quit quickly after that. Haven't done any of the main questline since (Preston get's annoyed when I walk out on him, lol).
I love exploring the huge open world, and the improved combat. Both VATS and manual sighted shooting are much improved. It is an excellent action/adventure shooter. Won't go into all the things I miss or dislike about it, as that is for other threads.
I love my wife.
I like playing Fallout 4. Important distinction by the way, since my wife has exhibited jealously toward the amount of time I've invested in the game.
As per previous posts, world building and lore, coupled with some open world mechanics make me like FO4 a great deal, warts and all. The settlement building is a leap for the player in terms of immersion (pretending to pick up the pieces and establish a home) works just enough, and frankly the defenses ripping attackers to pieces should they dare attack the settlement is priceless.
It's really the little stories that build up to the whole experience. There are places that are self contained that round out the main plot lines. Plus, no matter what faction you go with, you don't feel completely justified or satisfied with your choice (which means, it's a great multiple plot line, multiple ending type of mechanic). Exploration of POI and just random places are also great.
There are definitely annoying things, some of which the mod community seems to be addressing quite nicely, so I'm hoping fixes come in hot and heavy after the holidays.
Still, it's the first game in a long time that I've played more than once (just finished my second playthrough, seriously going to go for a third plot line now).
In seriousness . . . I don't recall for certain if I played FO2 or FO3 first. I _think_ it was FO2, and not long after the game had come out. One of the few games I would say "I finished." There were probably some things I didn't do in that game, but I did get to the "ending," though honestly I now cannot recall much at all about it or the game. Just lots of desert, lots of turn-based combat, graphics that at the time were pretty amazing and now seem like crayola drawings. In FO2 there was a sense of mystery a need to explore, a gritty 'in your face' reality that was presented in unison with an 'over-the-top' humorous quality.
I hesitate to suggest it without the caveat that: don't expect FO3/FO4 style "sensory bombardment," but if you go into it with a reasonable expectation it is quite simply one of the best games I think a gamer can play. I could go on and on but . . .
There were many games in between and I was nothing like a "fan" of Fallout but when FO3 came out (I somehow completely missed the various "side episodes in the 'series') I think I had a student who commented on it and I got it.
From the first moment I launched the game it resonated with me as "this is so freaking awesome, this takes the themes and textures from FO2 to a WHOLE NEW LEVEL!" The graphic arts in the opening movies, the design of objects, posters, Vault ads, the theme music, I was in love before I even got to the character gen screen. Coming into it pretty much ignorant of whatever the skuttle butt was, but with FO2 experience many years before I naturally was amazed and surprised when I realized that I was not 'portraying' a very high resolution, fully 3d character, not a tribal like in FO2, but a vault dwell (ahhh, now that is a neat twist) . . . holy crap I can redesign my face and hair and play either six!? (there were some presets in FO 2but the character models in the game are so low res it doesn't really matter. Next came the time lapse events in your childhood in Vault 114, fascinating and evocative glimpse into the 1950's influenced culture of the vault., and then eventually your required departure from the vault with the goal to find your father. A goal i never really took too seriously in that game..I can still recall my first raider fight mere minutes after exiting the vault, it was epic and the ruthless, unruly antagonistic style of the DC Wasteland Raiders became an instant favorite.
Oh man, let's see.
1. I love the graphics
2. It's a typical Bethesda game
3. Lot's of exploration
4. A biggie for me is the improved Vats. I love how it just slows time down instead of pausing the game.
5. I feel like I'm actually there.
'No we don't need another mountain, there are mountains and hillsides enough to climb .... what the world need now is love, sweet love' ...for Fallout
Things I love about Fallout, in no particular order ~
Settlement building, even with it's glitches/problems
Companions with backstories
The music (ambient, classic radio, Diamond City radio)
The DJ Travis
Dogmeat is the best with all of her special perks. They really outdid themselves with her (okay it's a him but played by a female).
Edit: Things I loved about Fallout 3 and New Vegas:
Silent protagonist
The main stories of both games (tbh I haven't finished F4 main story so no opinion yet)
Guns - the style or models were the best, especially NV
Mr. New Vegas, music in New Vegas and the music in Fallout 3
Ending slides
I played the very first Fallout and I have to say it is a very good game but I have yet to finish it. I got about half-way through, but I liked what I did play. I own, but did not play Fallout 2 yet.
483 hours since it came out.
Loving it? Not sure. I got what I bargained for. A Bethesda open world game with room for improvement. But I sure do like it.
So many varied ways to play the game, and imaginatively as well.
I suggest going back and playing Fallout New Vegas it had a 100 times more choices
If you're asking about the games, I like well written stories and interacting with interesting NPCs and the world in general. Attention to detail (both in terms of "human" detail and the game world detail) are great as well.
If you're asking about the universe, I've always liked post-apo and art deco.
Let's see. First I was a 100% TES fan, when it comes to Beth games. I heard about Fallout way back when, I guess it was Fallout 2 or something, but since I thought it was a zombie killer game, like Stalker, I didn't really look further into it, since those games are really not my cup of tea. Then, during the time Beth took over the IP, I saw people talking about the game on the TES forums (Oblivion forum I think) and I think someone linked the trailer for FO 3. HOLY CRAP, I loved that trailer. And I do like shooters (love Half Life series, even so it's more like a linear shooter).
After watching the trailer, I bought the game and imagine my surprise to find a huge open world that you can explore and that has cool quests and guns... I was sold. Fallout New Vegas came next and even so I had no high expectations, because AGAIN I had preconceived notions about the game, thinking it was a Wild West themed setting, I was even more surprised that I 100% loved that game! It is still one of my top 5 all time fav games! I then wanted to know about the early beginnings, how some of the factions started, check out the lore first hand so to speak and I got Fallout 1 and 2 as well.
And then we waited for many years and finally Fallout 4 has arrived. I love all the additions, the crafting, the settlements and I really love the companions. Beth has really done well creating characters that have some depth to them.
What I love about Fallout overall, is that it is a story about hope and rebuilding after a devastating war. Fallout 4 clearly picked up on that theme and even has the player involved in the rebuilding effort. Plus, Fallout has cool guns, cool outfits, cool player housing and a huge world waiting to be explored. I am definitely a huge Fallout fan!
Edit: Oh and don't forget about all the cool 1950's stuff and the amazing music of the 40's and 50's
On my list!
I purchased the Fallout franchise (minus 4, which i'm already playing) few days ago in the STEAM winter sale.
Without talking about FO4, i keep hearing nothing but good things about FOV.
If you got the DLCs for Fallout NV as well, then I suggest the following order:
Honest Hearts (such a nice change from the Mojave! I usually head to the Norther Passage around lvl 10ish. You can get some nice loot and great guns from that area).
Old World Blues
Dead Money
Lonesome Road <3 My all time favorite DLC EVER!
All the DLCs are so very well done, like everything in NV. Plus, your actions truly matter in this game!
I think I need to take a break from the Commonwealth and check on my character, who is still in Zion National Park!!
There's a lot of things I like about Fallout, but one of the most stand out aspects of the series for me is how it's not generic high fantasy like 98% of the other RPG IPs out there. The Fallout setting is a unique and compelling island in a sea of Dungeons & Dragons clones, most of which don't do anything particularly interesting with the Tolkien inspired Dungeons & Dragons template, and only slightly tweak tropes if they even bother to do even that much.
Another thing I really like is how (in the Black Isle/Obsidian games at least) you can finish quests in different ways depending on how you build your character, and you can possibly get through the entire game without firing a shot. This is something that I wish we saw more often in RPGs.
