Why do YOU play girls in Elder Scrolls games?

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 7:04 pm

If you play a girl in ES games, this thread is for you. I've never played a girl in any Elder scrolls game. I have played a girl in another RPG like Skyrim though: Dark Souls, but it was more viable to roleplay a Knight in that game than in this one.

Anyway, I've never played a girl in any ES game, because it never felt appropriate to me for the tone of the world and its gameplay. Maybe that comes across sixist? But its not meant to be. But I just felt more like, this was a world that focuses on strength and brutality...whereas females aren't really built "physically" (in the game) to match up with the strength and brutality, but would rather utilize more tactics, speed, distancing, etc to overcome their foes. But this game doesn't really have that "option" for combat so to speak, it's just run in and slash a lot. Of course, a girl can build up her body more to use more strength and brutality... But if you look at the female body models in the game they don't match up with this notion at all.

So for it to feel appropriate for me I always pick guys in Elder Scrolls. I personally like a more "footsie" oriented approach to combat. But since that isn't applicable in this game, I opt to just play a guy and call it a day. Anyway though, I did notice however that a LOT of people use females. Like a loooooot of people, and it always perplexed me. Females have the most mods, most variety, most char screenshots, etc, and it always made me wonder...why is it that so many people pick females in Elder Scrolls?

So if you have picked a female in Elder Scrolls games, please write why! I'd love to hear everyone's responses.

Does this have anything to do with Skyrim Mods whatsoever? Is this a poll or something?

I always start an Elder Scrolls game with a male. Imperial for Oblivion and Nord for Skyrim

Then I play as a female, with Custom Race

Reason? Mostly because they're pleasant to the eyes. You know what they say when a male suddenly stares at another male and never lift his eyes off him? Not exactly the saying you'd want your mother to hear.

I'm not saying playing as a male is bad, Kratos is a badass example and no Winning Eleven has ever featured a female, but playing as a female doesn't really need a special reason other than "just because"

Guys like to look at boobs, that is my theory anyways! :P

I used to play females only in games when I could, thought it was great I could make the ideal women I wished/wanted to be. Pretty, perfect hair, "perfect" body this was who I wanted to play wanted to be perfection.

Then I woke up one day and said WTF is wrong with me why must I feel like I need to play a girl, I suddenly found everything I used to love about playing females disgusted me it left a foul taste in my mouth. All these pretty little dolls.
After that I made a male character, a Highelf vampire and I loved to play him. Now I play males unless I have to play a female.

Except on Baldur's gate and Mass Effect because femshep is the single best female character ever made.

Why do I sometimes play as a male character and sometimes a female character? For variety. For role play. For fun. When I get a certain character in my head, I just have to make it. Playing a single six would feel like only writing a book with only male or only female characters. I am only disappointed that men and women are the only represented sixes.

The statements do sound a little sixist, but also a little narrow-minded. TES games are not all "strength and brutality". If it was, there'd be no reason to have Mages.
I like the options of playing each gender. I have my male hack n slash warrior, but also a female stealth/archer. Why? It makes more sense to me than a hulking orc sneaking around someone's house.

Just to answer this one though, most of modellers, animators, and production staff that works on mods like that are males. I assume you can draw a conclusion by that (not that EVERYONE are males, Nikiita hat made that "sixy glass armor" is a female if I remember correctly)

For me it is similar like Reastloz - I start with a male testcharacter and take a female character for the long run. But I use always a female character for the long run because I am female.

Somehow I just have problems visualising anything but a male decked out in heavy plate weilding Wuuthrad.
It's not just in Skyrim though. Never yet have I managed to get beyond level 8 playing a female in any TES game.
Speaking as a guy who tries to role play I find it impossible to identify with anything other than a male characater.
Even all that skimpy armour can't persude me.

I totally understand. I find it really hard to identify with a straight, non-Jewish, male character :P

I really don't see it as unrealistic to play a female in the ES. That's pretty much far from the truth, actually.

Considering how many of those "female mods" are dangerously naked, I think a substantial amount of that "why" is easily answered.

For many of the rest, I imagine that it's not so much they have a reason to play a female character, as they don't have a reason not to. Some people only play as the race local to the province, others don't care about that and play whatever's relevant to the character. You have your reason for not using a female character, but other people don't, so they choose one when it fits the character.

eh, i'd prefer to wait until all the bugs are out of the CK, and all the relevant armors have been converted before installing any body mods (male OR female)

as it stands, this is a pretty "what they do behind closed doors" kinda subject :P

I play a girl character in every Beth game because I'm female and they give me that option. Not only that, they also give me the option to use ranged weapons which less on brute force and more on stealth and finesse and I prefer that. My girl charactrers seem to do just fine and they also do it while wearing "reasonable female armor" ™.

Why is this in the mod section, exactly?

It's not in the mod section, anymore.

Apart from other reasons, and in contrast to the "strength and brutality" atmosphere, I actually like the image of a smallish, slender figure walking up to some heavily armoured guy or an Elder Dragon and whacking him to pieces. Doesn't need to be a female character, but it kind of reinforces the point.

Except on Baldur's gate and Mass Effect because femshep is the single best female character ever made.

YES! FemShep is the only way to go in Mass Effect. I tried playing the male Shep once and...just.. yuck. Monotone voice acting and just a boring guy. FemShep, as far as I'm concerned, is the REAL Shepard. Her, together with Liara are perfect and cute! I often forget there even is a male version of Shepard haha..

In Baldur's Gate, I like to mix it up. But I always play as an elf.. ;]

Also - (some) girls like to look at boobs, too. lolol ;]

Anyway... in Skyrim, I've had a hell of time playing as a female (which was never a problem in past TES games). In fact, I couldn't even get into playing as a Dunmer in general, which is my fav race. It was weird. Something about Skyrim's setting made it hard for me to play as any of the lore based races. So, after combining some mods, I now have the perfect custom character that just *feels* right to me; a male elf, that's kinda on the pretty boy, yet rugged side. ;]
If I played as a female, I feel like she'd have to be leaning towards the wicked side of the fence in character. Dunno why. Maybe because of Skyrim's theme? And it's really hard for me to role play an evil character.

I'm a female gamer, btw.

..Because bashing female opponents over the head with a mace just doesn`t seem right if I play as a male.
And I play 1st person.

Because I'm a women and find it easier to relate to female characters
As for stereotypes its interesting to play against them. A female warrior, an orc mage, a Nord thief etc
The average person in Tamriel isn't a warrior or a mage, they're a farmer or a shopkeeper. Your character is exceptional whatever their race or six

This. :ermm:

I guess it's because it's kind of "easier" for me to play a female? Really, I'm talking nonsense since my only male character is actually one of my favorite characters.
I don't really put my characters' gender as their most important and deciding feature. I just pick it after I've thought of everything else (race, playstyle, etc), the way I feel the character I have imagined would look like.
