Why do you play as the character that you play as?

Post » Mon Feb 07, 2011 6:47 am

Topic Title is pretty much open to your interpretation.

This is why my character came out as he did:

Name: Zakarius Svedlin
Race/Lore appropriate variation of my real name.

Race: Imperial
I chalk Race selection up to cosmetics. Plus I like the social skills boost, I'll explain why later.

Age: 22 (all the way down, then back up just before major face change)
Physical Description: Copper Windblown Hair at full length. Pale Skin (lighten a few shades), Green eyes. Everything else default.

Thats my actual age and looks good in game. The rest is just to make him look reasonably like myself.

Birthsign: Atronach
I truthfully do think that this is the best Birthsign in the game for my gameplay style. Imperials have low willpower but it doesn't matter much under the atronach. It gives me a huge Magicka boost and added defense, plus my alchemy heavy play style makes Stunted magicka a non-point.

Custom Class (Bard Picture): Alchemist (BEST IN ALL OF CYRODIL, and probably Skyrim)
Alchemy defines my play style, and it's what Im also known on these forums for.

Specialization: Magic
Magic is the only specialization that I use every single skill in frequently.

Attributes: Luck, Personality
Luck because I tend to level oddly with speechcraft and alchemy majors, and the global help Luck provides is really nice. I also dislike leveling gimmicks, leveling luck is simple, just +1 each level. Personality works with the initial boosts of the Imperial race and trickles down to my bartering skills. Plus gives quicker access to unique dialogue, which I enjoy.

Skills: Alchemy, Armorer, Conjuration, Destruction, Illusion, Mecantile, Speechcraft

Alchemy is the best skill in the game, providing buffs, health, magicka, and access to effects from all other schools except conjuration and destruction

Armorer benifits all weapons and armors in the game without committing to any of them specifically, I can use whatever I like whenever I find it.

Conjuration is in my opinion the coolest skill in the game. I love making full suits of bound armor (Custom spell, not glitch) and summoning weapons and creatures. Its also one only 2 schools whose effects are not included in alchemy.

Destruction is considered the best offense in the game, and its not provided via alchemy, so I take it as a skill.

Illusion is also very cool and I just like the boost to it. Invisibility is a nice trick to have up the sleeve, and as an Atronach I cant abuse it to the point of game breaking quite as easily.

Mercantile Works with the Racial and Attribute boosts to give me better deals early in the game when money is hard to come by. It also a skill that levels incredibly slow and benifits a character at any level, the boost is very welcome and in congruency with the social boosts.

Speechcraft for a lot of the same reasons I choose Mercantile (they work together). Special dialogue at higher levels is a perk.

There ya have it, thats why I do what I do, how about you?

Well... since I've got a couple of dozen characters, I'll just go with one - the one I have the most hours into:

Name: Claudia
I just like it.

Race: Redguard
All in all, probably my favorite race to play, but at the time I created her, I hadn't come to that conclusion yet. Mostly I created her because I'd noticed that Tamika is pretty and I wanted to create a green-eyed Redguard of my own.

Age: I dunno. Youngish.

Birthsign: The Thief
She was only my second Redguard, and I played the first as a heavy armor fighter. I wanted to see how a Redguard thief would do, and since, as a Redguard, she started out with mostly fighter attributes, I decided to go with The Thief. And the extra luck never hurts.

Custom Class: Drifter
That's just the name I use for a class when I don't have any clearer idea of what the character's going to be. I'm pretty sure though that that was the first time I used it.

Specialization: Stealth
She has a very carefully contrived set of majors, and stealth fit in best with them.

Attributes: Intelligence, Willpower
I figured that those were the attributes she was least likely to increase, and I wanted her to have more than the default.

Skills: Acrobatics, Armorer, Destruction, Hand to Hand, Marksman, Mysticism, Sneak

Acrobatics I find to be generally more useful for a sneak character than Athletics, and it's easier to control. I often avoid picking it with a stealth specialization, since that sets it at the fastest possible rate of increase, but since she has a very limited set of used majors, I figured it would be fine. It is.

Armorer is, in my opinion, the most useful "combat" skill in the game. The journeyman perk to repair enchanted gear is vital if you intend to use it and the expert 125% "repair" perk is a phenomenal bonus that applies to all your gear. And with a stealth spec, it would've increased a bit too slowly for my tastes as a minor, particularly since she was going to have to train her weapon skill (I'll get to that).

Destruction is one of my two favorite unused skill majors. Picking it as a major gives the character access to weakness to element effects whenever they can get ahold of the spells, so they can enchant them without having to invest anything into the skill. And it's easy enough to not use it.

Hand to Hand was an experiment. In hindsight, she would've been better off with blade. In any event, she actually fights with a blunt - a war axe. She had to train blunt for the first few levels (which is the other reason I made Armorer a major), but if she had had blade as a major instead of hand-to-hand, those five free h2h skill increases in the IC wouldn't have accounted for half a level all by themselves.

Marksman I pretty much always pick marksman as a major, whether the character's going to use it or not. If used, even as a spec major, it still increases slowly. If not used, it's a great placeholder. Claudia used it a bit early on, when her sneak skill wasn't sufficient to take out rooms full of enemies one by one, so she had to draw them off one by one and deal with them elsewhere. Since she got her sneak skill up far enough to get around in crowded rooms though, she almost never uses it.

Mysticism is my other favorite unused major. Like destruction, it provides a nice advantage having it as a major, since that makes soul trap available whenever the character buys the spell, and soul trap is basic to all my enchantments. And aside from soul trap, the only effect in mysticism that's of any real use is detect life, and there are more than enough enchantments for that.

Sneak is fundamental to a stealth character. I only sometimes pick it as a major, since it tends to increase a bit too quickly for my tastes, but since it's really the only major that I knew she'd be using a lot, I figured it'd be fine. And I wanted to make sure that she had plenty of sneak skill, since I intended to keep her sort of weak and rely on stealth bonuses for damage.

With only one heavily used major and, at this point, only two others that are used at all, she levels very slowly. At just about 140 hours, she's level 15. She's been all over though, starting out doing the MG recommendations and some of the side quests, then falling into the Thieves Guild, then countering that with KotN and most recently searching Ayleid ruins on commission for Umbacano. Since she was my first female character, and thus my first real roleplaying character, I didn't really know what to do with her at first. It took me a while to figure out that I had to establish her personality in order to understand what she'd want to do, so I just sort of did things according to whim for a while. That eventually became part of her personality - she's a bit flighty, though well-intentioned. I'm not sure if she's my favorite character, but she's somewhere near the top. And as my first female character and first real roleplaying character, she'll always have a place in my heart.

Actually Zak, on these forums you're known for your acute case of restartitis. :P

And your guide too, which is very informational by the way. Anyone who hasn't read it yet must go over it now! It'll save you making a thread full of questions later on.

Anyway, here's mine:

Name: Heartless
Because he's cold and brutal. (Though he was born as Silius Rato.)

Race: Imperial
It was the default race and this was my first character. I think cosmetics is what did it for me too.

Age: 33 (Just a couple notches above youngest.)

Physical Description: My intention was to make him look like myself but he didn't end up looking anything like me. http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab344/Holy_Assassin47/Oblivion%20Characters/22092010251.jpg?t=1305186747 He has long, black hair and wears a rather sad expression on his face.

Birthsign: The Thief
It would come in handy for my class.

Class: Assassin

Specialization: Stealth
Because he's an assassin.

Attributes: Intelligence, Speed.

Skills: Acrobatics, Alchemy, Blade, Light Armor, Marksman, Security, Sneak.

It was a default class, so I didn't pick them out for myself. It was my first character and I'll admit that when I started I had no clue what I was doing. My assassin was running around in full heavy armor and carrying a battleaxe. :P

Basically I wanted a Stealth based character as I personally enjoy the stealth aspects in any RPG. The subtle approach is the one for me. I made this character all the way back in 2006 and I haven't looked back since. :D

(I've made other characters, but they never stick around as long as this one.)

Name: Buffy. There are several influences and forces at work behind her name:
1. Alliteration. Buffy the blond Bravilian Bosmeri bowgirl. We much preferred the sound of Buffy to, say, Bambi or Barbie.
2. As a child, her parents had difficulty keeping clothes on her. She was always running around 'in the buff', as it were. Water seemed to make matters worse. In fact she was nearly thirteen before the red-face protests of her archery master, Daenlin, finally convinced her to be more discrete and not drop her clothes to go swimming in every stream they encountered while hunting. To this day, she pleads guilty to the refrain, 'Water makes her clothes fall off' - particularly near any waterfall. :twirl:
3. At the precise moment of sunrise that marked her birth, Buffy was touched by Azura's hand of fate as a Child of Dawn. Although she does not embrace the role, she is indeed one of few women with special abilities to help kill vampires. She is a Slayer, and her bow is so named. The influence of another Buffy with a vampire problem is inescapable.
4. In naming Buffy, I felt the name would be rather tongue-in-cheek and prevent me from taking her too seriously. In that regard. . . I fear I have failed miserably.

Race: Bosmer, from her mother. Her father was a Breton.

Age: 18 when I met her. She is 20 now.

Birthsign: Mage 'cuz she was born in Rains Hand and the Emperor said that was her sign.

Class: Bowgirl. 'Mystic Archer' wouldn't properly fit on the form Baurus gave her to fill out.

Specialization: Stealth. Baurus made her flip a septim between that and magic.

Attributes: Agility and intelligence. Acadian suggested she put that on the form.

Major skills: Marksman. Oh, Acadian helped her pick some others, but they're unimportant and only help control how high and how fast she leveled up.

Name: Nona Sintalius
I picked Nona because she has an interesting story as to how she became the character she is today. Originally, her name was Nona Sin'Tala, back when I wasn't being too lore-friendly with my names. Sin'Tala was a last name carried over from my character from another RPG I had been playing at the time.

Race: Imperial
Originally, Nona was a Dark Elf! My first character for Morrowind was a Dunmer, before I knew Morrowind was home of the Dunmer or anything about them. I looked through the manual and decided I liked Dark Elves the best. They seemed pretty awesome in Morrowind, so I thought I'd maybe make it a tradition to make my main character a Dunmer for TES games. Later, when I re-imagined Nona, I figured it was much more appropriate for her to be an Imperial in this situation, as I was crediting the main quest to her, so she became an Imperial and her name became Nona Sintalius.

Age: 25-35
I pretty much never think about age when I'm playing on my characters outside of a very rough idea of "young" or "old." I'm kind of like that in real life too, where I don't really think about anyone's age too much. I have no idea how old Nona is exactly, because it really doesn't matter to me. She could be 25 or 35, she's still the same character.

Birthsign: The Warrior
Just kinda seemed appropriate. I usually pick a birthsign based off of the descriptions in "http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:The_Firmament." The Warrior is skilled with all weapons, which I used to excuse why Nona got so good with a sword so quickly. She isn't prone to short-tempers though, so she's a bit of an exception to that. My main reasoning for it, though, was that, in the Redguard version of The Firmament, the Warrior is described as protecting the skies from The Serpent. My Nerevarine was born under the sign of the Serpent and became part of the Mythic Dawn after the events of Morrowind. Nona killed the Nerevarine.

Class: Crusader
Mostly arbitrary. I always pick my own skills, but I typically name my class the same name as one of the default classes. I find most of the default classes to be pretty impractical though.

Specialization: Melee Combat
Nona was just an average middle-class citizen before getting put in prison and getting caught in the center of the Oblivion Crisis. She learned her skills with a blade and heavy armor from the Fighters Guild and the Blades, so magic and stealth weren't really the strong points of those two groups. Being born under the sign of The Warrior helped her out in this regard as well.

Attributes: Strength, Endurance
Average attribute choices for a melee build.

Skills: Blade, Block, Heavy Armor, Armorer, Restoration, Athletics, Acrobatics
Pretty typical melee combat build. She took Restoration to be able to heal herself during and after battle, like a Crusader.

I killed the restartitis. Lets face it a whole lot of those characters were the same guy :D. I always thought I was gonna do something new or radical, but I think Svedlin is my fit. He looks like me, he thinks like me, and he has a fairly outside the box way of doing things, much like I do.

Thank you for the props on the guide, it is my masterpiece, and I wish theyd sticky it in the Hints forum.

BTW given some of the surveys weve seen on here, we have an interesting breakdown so far:

3-Imperials
1-Redguard
1-Argonian
1-Tree Hugger... er Bosmer

Name: Pariah.
Race: Argonian. :frog:
Age: 30 ish.
Class:Thief, Assassin, Master Alchemist. Argonian + Bow + Poisons = Very very cool.
Birth sign: The Thief.
Attributes: Stealth, Speed, Agility.
Skills:Marksman, Athletics, Acrobatics, Blade, Light Armour, Sneak, Security.
Finished Exit Sewers...........er sorry.

Pariah is a Shaodowscale on a mission from Black Marsh to infiltrate and destroy The Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary, with which he has a blood vendetta. He never uses magic, but uses alchemy extensively. He is based in Bravil, where he has easy access to The Shivering Isles and its many exotic plants and animals for his potions. He wears his trademark Heretic Robes and Hood, and carries a grand madness bow and deadric short sword. He also carries a light shield he stole from Kvatch, the wolf emblem serving as the emblem of The Grey Fox.

My current obsession is . . .

Name: Sir Rugrat gro-Shurgak
He was named ‘Rugrat’ by the Breton couple that raised him. gro-Shurgak came later, after he found out who he was.

Race: Orsimer
I wanted to experience life as one of the pariah-folk. The illegitimate progeny of Lord Rugdumph gave him a background and some personality.

Age: As close to the exact middle of the age bar as I could make it. So for an orc that would be, what, 30? The point is that Rugrat is no spring chicken.

Birthsign: The Warrior
This is an arbitrary designation because no one really knows the exact date of Sir Rugrat’s birth. He was found as a babe in Norvulk in the Wrothgarian Mountains at the end of Last Seed. Combined with the fact that he has always exhibited an exceptional strength and fortitude indicates that he was probably born under the Warrior sign.

Custom Class: Knight-Errant (Knight picture)
Sir Rugrat has devoted himself to ending the stigma against his people. Imagine Ghandi with a giant ebony warhammer. The performance of good deeds for the people of Cyrodiil is in gratitude for the home that he has found here. He is also trying to atone for killing his friend, Agronak gro-Malog, on the sands of the Arena.

Specialization: Combat
Sir Rugrat has no head for magic and he has never considered the idea of sneaking.

Favored Attributes: Endurance & Personality
His fortitude has served him well in battle, and his affable nature makes even the most orc-hating Redguard smile.

Major Skills:
Blade: As the offspring of a noble he was tutored in the use of a blade . . .

Blunt: . . . But he prefers his hammer.

Heavy Armor: Orcish Armor is heavy, but he refuses to wear anything else.

Marksman: He is forever an Apprentice with the bow. Good enough to hit the broad side of a barn, but not good enough to zoom in on it.

Alchemy: Because he has no head for magic, the Bretons in Norvulk taught him to brew his own potions.

Mercantile: One thing that has been true throughout the ages is that nobles do not part with their money easily.

Speechcraft: This was so important to his father that he took it upon himself to teach Sir Rugrat to abuse the language.

Name: Hrondar
It sounds nordic-ish and I think it is cool

Race: Nord
I like warrior culture, and the fact that the Thu'um is a part of their ancient way of life. The fact that TES:V is set in Skyrim doesn't hurt either,

Age: 34
Old enough to have valuable fighting experience, but young enough to keep up with the younger challengers.

Sign: The Mage
A little bonus to magica never hurts when it is without dissadvantages.

Class: Crusader
I actually go with the preset one since I think it plays well enough. Also with the lore about the class in MW they sound just like the character I want to play. See the class description in MW for more info ;)

Comabt style: Melee combat with spellcasting.
The Crusader supports a Paladin-ish playstyle with the main focus on melee combat and supporting that with spells from the School of Destruction and Restoration.

Name - Sabarel Tatheth - I orginally got the name from when I RP'd on WoW. It loosely translates in Elven to Discipline of the Night and as I played a Night Elf Priest at the time it fitted very well. I've kept it ever since.

Age - 22 - A year younger then myself, tend to keep them around the same age as me for maturity reasons.

Race - Breton - Fell in love with the Lore a few years ago now. Looks like a normal Imperial to any non Elder Scrolls player yet when I explain it they just look confused, this pleases me.

Starsign - The Apprentice - Balances out the Breton Magicka resistance and makes me a little weaker againest Magicka. Stops the character from becoming Game-Breaking.

Attributes - Willpower and Personality - Faster Magicka Regen and boost to Mercentile and Illusion at start of game is useful from Personality. Flipped a coin between Personality and Intelligence.

Class - Magi - Conjuration, Restoration Alteration, Illusion, Destruction, Mysticism, Mercentile - Although I enjoy Alchemy I didn't want to over use it by mistake to early in the game and fly up too many levels. This balances my leveling out and lets me keep going at a constant pace. Over 500 hours in and Mysticism, Restoration and Mercentile still not at 100.

I can't really get into racial or statistical reasons why I play my characters as I do, because they all fall into these categories:

dead is dead

Minors as Majors (so my games doesn't level out of control with glass-wearing bandits and minotaurs every 100 meters).

race varies, but it's always a human or elf. I can't get into playing a beastfolk

Age varies, as to waht seems appropriate for the character (middle-aged witch or young, strong, aspiring fighter, for instance)

Attributes vary as to what seems appropriate...etc.

But I've always felt psychological reasons as to why I play my characters as I do. These seem far more interesting to me.

Beujok the Grey Wizard (current Breton mage) and Igodah Go^Pe (deceased high elf mage) are and were basically psychological extensions of some of my own desires. Both are/were about 90% magic-users. I sometimes wish I were all-powerful, could make amazing things happen at the snap of my fingers. That's what these two characters allow me to do. Even if it is just a game, I do get something, some sort of release, from becoming all-powerful.

Both characters rarely engage in any sort of face-to-face combat. IF they do happen to get face-to-face, it's usually with some sort of touch spell which effectively zeros any chance of the enemy fighting back immediately. I myself am very non-confrontational in my everyday life, but I have (in the past) affected others here and there from a distance. I've pllayed tricks on people when I was younger (some just for fun, some for harm). So this probably factors into these two characters somehow. I'm basically too much of a wimp to raise my voice IRL, but could be goood at ...you get the point.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dyan phor a'Cauz is my Lawful Good paladin. When I started playing her, one of the main things I enjoyed was the fact that she's such a goody-goody that I never have to worry about bounties or being stalked by Imperials, or anything like that. To be honest, knowing taht all the towns and cities are basically "safe zones" for her, where she will not be attacked or confronted for any wrongdoing, was definitey a relief.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wanda Bone (game got erased) was my slave/theif character. Lou Zehr is my current theif character. Both were/are Redguards. Both are into getting away with whatever they can under the noses of the Imperial Guards. So I get (therefore) huge rushes of adrenaline when playing both of these. :ahhh: Unlike Dyan, there are huge portions of time during which the "safe zones" are actually not safe! But that rush of adrenaline is great, and it doesn't always end immediately.

If a goblin is chasing you, for instance, there's a chnace that it will give up once you're outside its lair. And even if it follows you outside, there's a chance somebody will eventually be there to help you. Not so with guards. They're usually a heck of a lot more persistent! There have been times I've run thru a huge portion of the sewers when playing Wanda or Lou, guards in puersuit. I'll stop running because I assume the guard has given up. Nope! Within a minute or so, that eye lights up, and there's the guard! :nope:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are other characters....

My dark elf witch character Luci Pheria was supposed to be insane. She was very antisocial. There is a part of me which is just this way (especialy when I was younger). Very anti-social....putting curses on people....etc.

Just created a new cahracter

Name: Marcus Aurelius ... (last of the emperors during Roman's Golden Age)

Race: Imperial

Age: 34

Birthsign: The Lady

I checked out the Birthsigns, I just want to try this one out, my character is a scholar not a magician while he knows a couple of magic schools trough.

Class: Scholar , very much a Magician but not truly a magician he knows a lot about spells, but he isn't 'out wordly' like must mages are he knows how to deal with merchants and other people.

Specialization: Magic.

Attributes: Intelligence, Personality

Skills: Alchemy, Alteration, Conjuration, Destruction, restoration , Mecantile, Speechcraft

Alchemy = He is in awe with Flora and Fauna on Tamriel, also he worked in the magic / alchemy shop of his father when he was youn.
Alteration = Before he was kicked out of the University this was one of the schools he used to learn in ...
Conjuration = See Alteration, also Marcus enjoys letting 'monsters' fight for him ....
Destruction = In combination with Conjuration ...
Restoration = Marcus spend some time in a Priory when he was kicked out of the university ....
Mercantile , Speechcraft = When he was young he picked up from his father ...

Marcus Aurelius used to work from young on in the shop of his father a alchemist, his father did have a shop in Wayrest in High Rock ... When Marcus was sixteen his father did get a heartattack and died of it ... Marcus runned the shop for a little while with his mother and sister but wanted to adventure and gived up the shop ... His Sister did get married with some local nobleman, his mother did sell the shop and retired .... Marcus went to the arcane university in Cyrodill ... But after a couple of years he and a couple of his fellow students went in argument about 'necromancy' when not even dealing in Necromancy, Marcus did get kicked out, ofcourse it was a set up ....

Marcus went wandering in Cyrodill felt in love with a priestress of a priory did get in learning with her, learned about restoration, trough life went on ... The love went on ... Marcus went to Cheydindalh with the money he earned he brougth a nice home there and earned some cash with alchemy , being a teacher at the local mages guild, and telling stories since he is after all a scholar and knows much ....

He isn't a pure magician, like I said he knows how to deal with people in the real world wich many mages lack ....

That's a cool idea, the Marcus Arellius (however you spell it) one. I've been having these sort of historical ideas for characters. Thinking of doing Jesus, for instance. But I know after an hour or so I would get bored of healing and persuading NPCs. Maybe in a modded game, Jesus could be more interesting somehow. I'm on the PS3.

Was thinking Joan of Arc could be more fun, since there would be combat. But (again) in the vanilla game it would be hard to implement some of Joan's more epic feats. But really, I already have a Lawful Good paladin female. She's kinda close to Joan I guess.

.....I'm rambling.

Name: Cayo Artaria
I like it, and sounds Imperial-ish.

Current Level: 57

Race: Imperial
I like roleplaying someone that is on it's native province. Plus, it saves me from thinking what the **** is doing there.

Age: 21
Cayo is one of the youngest Legion Battlemage Officers all around. It took him only 3 years to master his training, where it normally takes 5.

Birthsign: The Ritual
I wasn't going to pick neither the Mage or the Atronach, and I don't quite see the point on all the others. Plus, it has a powerful Turn Undead spell, and Mara's Gift replenishes 100% of my HP, which has been a lifesaver many times (Cayo has his HP capped to 200).

Custom Class (Battlemage Picture): (Legion) Battlemage Officer
There's no better warrior than a Battlemage. Period. Mastering both the way of the Sword and the way of Magic makes anybody unstoppable.

Specialization: Combat
I prefer Combat specialization over Magic. It better suits someone warrior-spirited.

Attributes: Strength, Endurance
Same reason as above.

Skills: Blade, Heavy Armor, Alteration, Mysticism, Destruction, Restoration, Athletics

Blade / Destruction....I'm a Battlemage. Do I really need to explain?

Heavy Armor, because soldiers that use Light Armor tend to suffer from horrific things in the Legion showers...

Alteration: Open, Water Walking/Breathing, Shield, Feather....it's basically the Battlemages' toolkit.

Mysticism: Absorb spells, some Reflect when I'm in the mood, Detect Life to catch that annoying critter that is pursuing me (aka, pursuing his death), and Soul Trap to feed my sword.

Restoration: Absorb Health is the best Vanilla offensive spell ever, plus Restore Health/Attributes for me and my allies, and Fortify Magicka for an extra spell-fuel boost

Athletics: Soldiers must be fit :P

I've been through too many times to keep track of all of my characters, but here's the one I'm currently playing.

Name: Frasela

Race: Breton

Age: really young

Birthsign: Thief

Custom Class: Bushwhack(er) - curse the character limit

Specialization: Stealth

Attributes: Endurance/Personality (Bretons bite on these two, so I took all of the help I could get)

Skills: Light Armor, Marksman, Alchemy, Conjuration, Athletics, Blade, Security

Except for the combat skills, I played to my playing-style weaknesses for a slower-leveling character. Stealth improves way too quickly, as do Destruction, Restoration and Alteration, which is why I left them as Minors. I tried for a decent spread, though, as far as potential attribute bonuses. So far I'm managing to avoid relying on magic except for healing and summoning the occasional cannon-fodder. On the other hand, I'm getting smacked around pretty well despite trying to deal with things at range. She's only level 5, so it's not too bad. We'll see if I can hang into the teens.

I recently made a new character after I got back into Oblivion.... This was mainly for role playing purposes.

Name: Elvira Averay
- Elvira's one of my favourite feminine names, and Averay (I'm pretty sure it is) is an Old English surname. This name is just what my character goes by, as she has long forgotten her true name. She took this name when she arrived in Cyrodiil.

Race: Altmer
- I used the Altmer race as they're my preferable choice whenever I play. However, with this character, her skin is completely white with rose red lips. It took me ages to get it right. For the roleplay factor, I'm at a disadvantage, because I'm on the PS3. So I just "pretend" she's a different race altogether.

Age: Unknown, but appears youthful.
- I didn't set an age for her. I wanted her to remain an enigma. I hardly age my characters anyway.

Birthsign: The Atronach
- Her magic is powerful, yet I wanted to set a repercussion for that benefit, so this birth sign is ideal. On a side note, I prefer larger Magicka pools.

Class: (Custom) Ambassador
- The name fits her role. Unfortunately, the vanilla version doesn't really help bring that to life. =\

Specialization: Magic
- Elvira possesses countless years of experience in the art, and prefers its majestic beauty to what she considers the savagery of swordplay. It's also my favourite style of combat.

Favoured Attributes: Intelligence, Personality
- Elvira understands that in order to play the ambassador, she must possess a keen intellect and a charismatic demeanor.

Skills:

Alchemy: She is an expert in this profession, and often takes interest in the flora of Cyrodiil, including the Nirnroot. Restore Magicka potions are vital.
Alteration: She is a master in every corner of this school. Open is the greatest substitute for Security.
Conjuration: Whenever you need assistance...
Destruction: Your basic offensive mechanism.
Illusion: Diversion and deceit are expendable. Paralysis is useful, even for a second.
Restoration: Every sorceress should know the basics. Absorbing Magicka can help.
Speechcraft: Skilled in diplomacy. This is really just to fit with the Ambassador class.

Yeah, this was actually my first proper roleplaying character I have ever made, so I'm pretty proud of her :P

Originating from an unknown land engaged in a prolonged conflict with Tamriel, Elvira's task remains a mystery to the public. Requesting a private engagement with Ocato in order to establish a truce between the two lands was met with failure, even after an appeal to the Elder Council. Due to this failure, Elvira takes a different step into the plan altogether, gathering the members of the organisation known as the "Scarlet Trail": a group established ages ago in order to deal with events such as political conflicts and war. Elvira's aim is benevolent and justified: To end years of conflict between her homeland and Tamriel. Elvira's desperation causes her to turn to the influential establishments of Cyrodiil, leading her to the Council of Mages and the Arch Mage himself. Elvira finds an ally within the Council as the Oblivion Crisis escalates, causing her to divert attention away from her main goal. The end of the Crisis was not an end to her troubles, however, as she now faced a greater challenge: To deal with the already rigid Elder Council.

That's all I'm into so far. If I had Oblivion on the PC, I would spend hours implementing this into a mod. This is my only character so far, and it has eaten away A LOT of my time in the game :P

Name: Cador
Class: DeathKnight
Race: Breton
Sign: The Lady
Age: Old... 3/4 of the way to max.
Appearance: Black 'windswept' hair. Very pale skin, wrinkled face wearing a perpetual snarl. Looks more like a vampire than my actual vampire characters really hehe. (Boy is he ugly hahahHAHAHAHAHHAHAH!!)
Major Skills: Blunt, Conjuration, Destruction, Restoration, Alteration, Armorer, Mysticism
Favoured Skills: Combat
Initial Stat Boosts to: Willpower and Endurance.

Rationale: I like the idea of DeathKnights and was tired of sneaking around with my previous character. I set out to try and create a powerful armoured warrior, augmented by evil necromantic magic.

The combat focus allows him to level his heavy armour and melee skills fairly quickly while the high starting Will allows him to cast spells with relative impunity. This class is primarily melee oriented, focusing on heavy armour and large 2-handed weapons. Summoned creatures provide support. Alteration shields aid in damage mitigation. Conjured Creatures should be limited to varieties of Undead in order to keep with the class-lore. Restoration spells should be mainly focused on absorbing health away from enemies. Mysticism may be swapped for illusion (Fear away opponents) but I liked soul trap. This class has no stealth capabilities. Should eventually be armed with a 2-H Sword enchanted to drain health and trap souls.

Pros: Easily controllable leveling majors. When you want to stop leveling just rely on non-magical combat.
Cons: Starts out somewhat weak in melee and requires building up into the role. Primarily through early Str and End increases.

*ADDITIONAL NOTES: I'm playing with the difficulty slider almost all the way up (on PS3) so for now he's more of a DeadKnight. The only Death and Terror he brings to the land right now are his own*

Deaths to Date:

Had a Marauder's Iron Claymore planted in his skull- 2
Immolated by a Necromancer's Lightening blast- 3
Set aflame by a conjured Scamp - 1
Scratched to Death by Conjured Scamp - 1
Stabbed by Conjurer's Dagger -1
Hacked to pieces by Conjurer's Summoned Axe - 1
Waylaid by a pair of Bandits - 1
Double-teamed by Gravity and a deceptively high rock - 1

Name: Raven

Race: Breton

Age: 29

Birthsign: The Mage

Custom Class: Wizard

Specialization: Magic

Attributes: Strength, Endurance

Skills: Conjuration, Destruction, Illusion, Marksman, Light Armor, Heavy Armor, Hand-to-Hand

Raven was very athletic throughout her early youth and pre-prison days (hence the slightly augmented strength and endurance). And to this day she runs everywhere she goes outside (no fast travel). As a teen she was also comfortable in armor and quite good (for her age) with a bow. However, her innate intelligence and interest in the arcane has lead her down the path of wizardry. (((In non-RP terms: I picked several majors she will never level -- marksman, light armor, heavy armor, hand-to-hand -- unless it's by choice later on in her career to gain a few more levels)))

I made (and then remade) this character several times last week before settling in the build listed above. She has black loose hair, medium length. She wears no armor, just a Dark Shirt, Black Wide Pants (both of which weigh 0 and look cool to me), and some pointy soft leather shoes, plus rings and an amulet. While I made this character consciously with an idea towards leveling slow and in a manner I like, she is first and foremost my RP character. She eats every day (usually some vegetables, bread, and maybe a piece of ham or venison). She sleeps every night or if adventures keep her out of doors for a long period of time, when she does get to a safe bed she's known to sleep for 12+ hours at a stretch to catch up.

First and foremost, she is an aspiring wizard. During these early days of her post-prison-life, she is focused on increasing her proficiency with destruction and restoration spells, though looking down the line she will eventually develop her skills in all the magical areas. She's already an accomplished alchemist, as she finds it a great way to experiment with the many strange herbs and substances she compulsively collects from Tamriel, and it keeps her mind sharp. Likewise, in addition to running everywhere to maintain fitness, she also trains regularly as an armorer and occasionally spars with lesser beasts (((blocks))) to keep up her endurance. She may not wear armor, but she is no weakling!

I am finding this a very, very fun character to play. Basically the "glass cannon" archetype, but with a nod towards fitness (endurance). Later, she will build up her speed as well. For the moment, she is focused on intelligence (alchemy), willpower (destruction and restoration) and endurance (training armorer x5 and self-training block x5, per level). This is my one nod towards "semi-efficient leveling." I simply visit Rohssan after each level up for 5 levels in armorer, and then find a mud crab to block for 5 more block levels. Then I used my vast store of acquired alchemical ingredients to mix up a ton of potions (enough for 10 level ups): I keep the useful ones, sell the rest. Takes a few minutes. That's it for semi-forced play-style. Everything else is purely in-the-moment, and Raven's build promotes slow leveling and playing the way I like. I'd say about 95% of my playtime is not playing "efficiently" in that I'm not worrying about skill ups. By guaranteeing my +5 endurance and +5 intelligence in the first minutes post-level-up, it frees all my time to just run around and adventure. Works out great and it's a ton of fun.

Raven did bring the Amulet to Jauffre immediately after exiting the sewers, as it was the Emperor's last request. But she is not ready to take on the main quest which lies before her. She feels she has a lot to learn about the world and her place in it. For the moment she is aspiring to become a full member of the mage's guild, and her good nature leads her to helping the citizens she meets around the province. She is basically neutral good in alignment. She will occasionally "bend" the law (for example, breaking into a bad guy's house to help honest store-owners stave off poverty), but she is not a murderer, nor even a thief. She has wanderlust, yet at the end of a long day (or more) of exploring, she does indeed enjoy the comfort of a safe, indoor bed.

I have never played RP-style before. I must say, Raven is by far my most fun character yet. I had a "perfect" Nord warrior über character (max strength, endurance, and very high agility, speed, luck) with tons of armor, etc., who fast-traveled everywhere, hit wait to "free" heal, etc. But he's not nearly as fun to actually play as Raven is. I think the best part, for me, of having an RP character is that once my little "oh I've just leveled, I'll max endurance and intelligence now" is done (about 5 to 10 minutes), the entire rest of the level is spent truly in the moment. Caught up in sudden rainstorms, or running across vast stretches of land under the stars, happening upon paths not even on the map, meeting people I never met in the world before, discovering new sites. It's extremely satisfying to me to play in this way.

After grueling over it and realizing my character was basically a clone in basics to ZakariusSvedlin...which makes me sad considering I just realized the similarities. And clones, are no nos. So here's my completely new character I was workshopping.

Name: Dalamus
It sounds like a good Dunmer name and has a ring that I like to it.
Race: Dunmer(Dark Elf)
One of the rare instances where I can make this race look like what I want
Age: 28

Birthsign: The Mage
+50 Magicka is a VERY high benefit.
Custom Class(Nightblade Picture): Legion
A special soldier that uses magic? In any case, Roman culture is very interesting to me.
Specialization: Combat w/ Magic Supplement.
Attributes: Intelligence, Strength
Skills: Blade, Block, Alteration, Destruction, Restoration, Light Armor, Heavy Armor

Dalamus is basically a Dark Elf soldier who specializes in magic to harm enemies and help allies.

Name: Arran
Form of the word Aryan meaning "noble / honorable". (Not the daft Nazi lie where it means 'white race'. Arya / Ehre is an Indo-European word meaning honor / noble. From it we also get the words Aryan & Earl meaning 'nobleman')

Race: Nord.
I myself am white of the northern hemisphere. I think people of the Baltic are a tall, strong, handsome / pretty and intellectual people.

Appearance: Blonde hair (long). Golden / bronze tanned skin. Blue eyes

Age: 30-35ish
The peak of life having both youth and experience.

Class: Custom (Gohtar)
Birthsign: Warrior (though Lady could have been chosen)
Specialization: Combat
Attributes: Strength, Willpower
Skills: Blade, Block, Heavy Armor, Armorer, Restoration, Destruction, Alteration.

Very strong & powerful with sword, shield and heavy armor which when in wilderness or dungeons he can repair himself.

For long range attacks can caste fire, shock, frost spells

When in battle can heal himself & shield from magic

has no problem with lock picking when on dungeon raids as can open locks with magic.
using all willpower magic he can also make himself stronger to carry more, fortify himself & breath under water.

His only weakness is sneak but he's strong enough not to need to sneak. Enemies barely scratch him.
