Is Wild Wasteland good?

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 12:42 am

I'm currently choosing my traits, and I'm torn between Skilled and WW. Is WW good? Does it make the game that much more enjoyable?

I would love nothing more than to see a mod that adds more Wild Wasteland Encounters. I felt they were lacking, and some of the encounters couldn't be found unless you were looking exclusively for them.

What ideas do you guys have?

What exactly does it do? Does it add many weird elements to the game or just a few?

It doesn't feel like a completely different game with WW, if that's what you're asking. It's mainly a bunch of isolated throwaway gags and references - adding a skeleton here, changing a creature or NPC there. I love it.... but I'm not sure if it's worth taking up one of two trait slots. I usually just pick whatever else then use the console to add in WW.

it certainly is entertaining and for however long you have the ammo the alien blaster is pretty damn good.

WW basicly adds some encounters and referneces and changes a long range Energy Rifle for a close range Energy Pistol

It's alright provided you aren't expecting the Wasteland to become a cartoon. Like Tranquillus said, it's mostly just throwaway gags to 'nerd' culture. I just use it because there's no negative consequences to it, same with Good Natured.

Edit@General- That's a gross exageration. It changes a http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/YCS/186 encounter to a http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Alien_blaster_%28Fallout:_New_Vegas%29. (Links provided for OP's sake)

I was hoping for it to be a bit more like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Unfortunately I didn't see my dead grandmother crawling up my leg with a knife in her teeth, and no one was giving the lizards booze :(

Yup, you can do that in the Sink, by talking to the Auto Doc in the Old World Blues DLC :)

And if I had the modding capability, I would have done this. I would have made Wild Wasteland the craziest thing to hit video games in years. It probably wouldn't be legal.

It's about as wild as eating porridge through a straw in a old folks home playing bridge.

Very mild general spoiler:

There's not that much difference between the plain game and WW. Definately play it at least once for the assets. It might come down to which goodies you get with either choice when you clear the area with the mercenaries. WW brings a different weapon selection.

I would suggest getting it. It barely changes the game and I enjoyed all the WW encounters I had on my first playthrough.

I tried WW once. I wasn't impressed. Sure the nerd/pop references and occasional altered encounter are fun to see, but they didn't make the game feel wild and wooly or different. Plus, I prefer the Unique Gauss rifle over the Alien blaster. So imo, which weapon you care about (if you care about either at all) would be what decided me whether to take it or not.

Wild Wasteland wasn't meant to make the game completely different. For those that aren't familiar with Fallout and Fallout 2, I will fill you in. Fallout has random special encounters while travelling through the world map. Intended to add some humor into the game, something to do while going though the wasteland. Easter Eggs. Fallout 2 has this as well, but there are far more easter eggs that are about pop-culture references and even some fourth wall breaking easter eggs outside of the world map.

This created a split in the fan base. Those that hated the amount of pop-culture easter eggs in Fallout 2 and those that liked them. It was one of the big criticisms of Fallout 2. So the Devs of New Vegas, which worked on Fallout 2 just made Wild Wasteland Trait as an option for those that want the crazy pop-culture references in the game, such as "Nuked the Fridge" reference.

I hope they keep this trait for Fallout 4 because there are far to many people that don't understand the concept of an Easter Egg.

I don't think it warrants a trait slot. It should be something you can just toggle on or off. While I don't loathe pop culture references, the one thing that I've always rolled my eyes at is the idea of "aliens" in the Fallout universe. Wild Wasteland added them back in, removing the unique Gauss rifle in exchange for a weapon I'd never feel comfortable using.

Honestly I'd probably take it in a heartbeat if that one encounter were removed.

Wild Wasteland encounters aren't canon, just like the Special Random Encounters of old aren't canon. It is a way of adding things like "aliens" into the game without people going "see it's canon!" cause like I said there are people that don't understand the concept of easter eggs. They are none canon for fun things put into the game.

I wasn't happy with it taking up a trait slot at first but I got used to it.
