Will 4gb vs 8gb make a difference?

Post » Tue Jan 04, 2011 1:52 pm

Will an extra 4gb for a total of >8gb make a difference to the game or should 4gb be just fine.

Also what upgrades will you be making to your current rig?

Specs:

Processor: AMD Athlon II X4 / 2.9 GHz
Memory: Corsair XMS 3 / 4 GB
Motherboard: Gigabyte:DDR3
Graphics Card: Nvidia GTX 460

I did and it made things quite a bit smoother. I run most games at full settings (core 2 duo 3.0ghz, HD5870, 8gb ram), so I'm not worried. I'd say you should be fine, but the upgrade in RAM would help.

It won't make a difference to the game, might help if you run a lot alongside the game, but 8gb of RAM would be nice to have. I don't plan on making any upgrades to my rig, it'll play skyrim fine. I'll upgrade my GTS 450 at some point in the future, though.

No upgrades here because I have a laptop. I figured spending money on a laptop would be better than spending that same money on a new desktop.

Specs:
Proc: Intel i7 740m - 1.73ghz w/ turbo up to 2.93 ghz
Memory: 8 gb DDR3
Vid Card: Geforce GT 435M w/ 2gb VRAM

I don't intend on upgrading my computer at all. It should handle just fine for several more years. But for the OP, don't be surprised if Skyrim is a 32-bit program.

I imagine the game will be made in mind to work with 32-bit OSs (meaning the executable will be 32-bit), so I imagine even having 4 GB will not make much of a difference since it can't even use more than 2 GB.

Though it is always good to have more headroom, so I say go for it. I could definitely tell the difference when I upgraded my computer from 4 GB to 12 GB.

Yes, check out this article for more info on why you should get 8 gb

So when the games specifications are released and if its a 32-bit app does that mean the reccomended ram needed will be 2gb?.

Also could I use something like CFF Explorer to enable >2gb plus to allow for more than 2gb awareness...

4 to 8 maybe. More than 8...I doubt it.

If you're in the mood to spend some money and to upgrade your system...go ahead.

It won't require more than 2GB RAM, it has to run on consoles, and it has already been confirmed there are no PC-specific enhancements. While you could use one of many LAA patchers, if the game doesn't require 2GB of RAM, it doesn't require 2GB of RAM.

I imagine so. It might say more to account for OS and other application usage, but you'll really only need 2 GB free to run it.

And I'd recommend that as well. The only problem is Skyrim will be a Steamworks game, and Steam doesn't like when you mess with the executable.

Was steamworks confirmed or do you merely think it's an inevitability?

If you're simply upgrading, I wouldnt bother. But if you're building a new PC, I'd say 8gb is appropriate. We bought new PCs at the job with 8gb and core I5 CPUs, and my home PC feels like it's 10 years old by comparison. I'm definitely getting 8gb or 12gb for my next PC (which is likely going to be a laptop, just because I like to play at different places in the house). Waiting some more, though. And it will take more than one game (Skyrim) to make me shell out the dough.

Edit: I'm comparing in Windows 7, not in games obviously. But even if only for operations in windows, I wont settle for 4gb.
