Will we be able to create Asian Male characters?

Post » Tue Dec 01, 2015 3:54 pm

I'm Chinese-American and with games like these I like to create a character that looks like myself. Haven't had any problems with that since Fallout 3 but with Fallout 4 starting before the war I have some concerns.

During the E3 presentation, when the characters were being sculpted and he was going through the presets I didn't notice any Asian male presets. Also, is the main character's last name going to be locked into "Howard"?

EDIT: Also wanted to thank Bethesda for making cool Asian male characters like Col. Hsu from New Vegas. Don't see a lot of cool Asian male characters in video games.

I find it highly unlikely you wouldn't be able to, but Howard was the first name of the character in the demo.

I'm pretty sure there will be an asian male type. If not, customize, widen the eyes or something.

No, it's not gonna be Howard. You can set whatever the name you want (there are 1000 common names that are recorded for Codsworth to say)

As far as I know we don't know what the protag's surname is. Howard was the guy's name and it's one of the prerecorded names Codsworth has in his vocab.

As for being Asian, I really don't see why it wouldn't be present. We know race is present and we know you could make Asian characters in FO3 (right?) so it would be really weird to remove the option now.

You will most likely be able to change the eye shape if that's what you mean, It seems instead of race they have made it an all in one system so you change Skin tone, Complextion, Eye shape, ect.

The name isn't locked in - you can choose from around 1000. I'd also guess that you could make an East Asian character, given Bethesda's 'be who you want to be' design philosophy. By the way, Indians, Pakistanis etc. are 'Asian', too ;)

The whole 'pick your race' thing as seen in Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas doesn't appear to be there anymore. It's all sculpture now, so you have to mold yourself an Asian dude. As said before, 'Howard' is just one of the 1,000 common names that was recorded, but don't let it stop you from giving your Asian dude a proper name of your choosing.

It looked to me like with current customization we would even be able to make races that weren't in previous games.

Whoa, thanks everyone for the lightning-quick replies! I thought 'Howard' was the surname (thought I heard Codsworth saying 'Mr. Howard' when he told the main character to check on the baby). Hope the surname won't be locked like in Mass Effect (though there were Asian male presets in that game and it was the distant future so something like that could be explained).

Absolutely! I hope everyone will be able to make themselves or whoever they want in Fallout 4.

I agree with you. I enjoyed skyrim, but I really didn't appreciate that they removed the hand-to-hand skill :( Missed punching armoured knights (or vikings) to death...

Btw, OP, as a fellow asian, I agree with you, and I think it will be highly likely for us to make asian characters. They always allowed us to do that in the previous games, no?

No the 'surname' was actually the first name. If you ever watched Red Dwarf, in the episode Kryten (When everyones favorite mechonoid was introduced and played by a different actor) Kryten referred to Lister and Rimmer as Mr David and Mr Arnold respectively.

You put your name in and if it's one of the 1000 recognized ones, Codsworth will call you by it.

eg:

Mr Howard

Miss Nicola (Cos you just know they won't have Nikki damn it)

Mr gary

Miss Charlette

I presume that if your name isn't on the list, then it will just be Ma'am or Sir. So, you would get idiots giving their character something obscene and then uploading a ten minute video of Codsworth swearing. (Thankfully)

There do seem to be a series of presets to use as a starting point. I don't think we saw them all. The one that they used to sculpt the black male in the mirror was Face 01 (Mr. Default White Guy). It was an unmodified Face 01 that was used throughout the trailer.

While there are no preset human races to sellect like in previous games (Caucasian, Asian, Afro-American and Latin i believe), you can sculpt your character to be anny kind if decendant/racial prefferance. Depending on you skill in the new character editor, you can make a asian, or black or maybe indian character by sculpting facial features an skin colour. It will however not be referanced to you that your a asian dude/girl i think by npc, cause honestly it is not importent to who YOU are wether your black or white or latino or whatnot.

PS: on a sidenote, there are preset faces you can use as basis, and some of those seem to be based of ethnicity and age. So it is posible to select an asian looking preset and sculpt that to your liking most likely. Again however, now npc will likely come up to you and say that you are/look Asian or annything.

It didn't do that in previous games either. I don't think Beth are about to introduce TES-style racial dialogue to Fallout. People walking up to you and saying "Good day fellow White man!" or "Greetings, Negro" would set a rather odd tone for the game.

I don't think the character's name is locked at all. and I think the point of the new character face editing system is that you can modify the facial structure in any way you'd like. so you could make any racial appearing face, and I think we can edit skin tone as well as I could have sworn I saw that in the demo.

Todd actually typed in the name "Howard" and that's why his PC is called that name (plus it's evidently one of the 1,000 spoken names for Codsworth).

If you look carefully, you can see that there seem to be quite a few presets for starting your PC modeling. Todd goes through a bit then speeds up time, but then he resets to the default preset for Face01 to get on with the demo.

By the way, FO4 apparently goes on sale in Japan in December about a month after its release in the West, so it seems almost certain that there will be Asian presets included as a base to begin modeling the PC.

Race, as it once was in preivous Fallout games, is now replaced completely with having all hair-cuts, and skin tones on one body you get to mold to your liking. Ask yourself what makes an Asian look Asian, and sculpt it. Also, there is no locked last name, if you don't choose one of the thousand names Bethesda has recorded you would be called mister, or misses by your robot butler.

There are a selection of presets, but, it is also possible to sculpt your character in tiny detail, right down to skin tone. You can make yourself look like anyone you want. :)

Well, not really. I seriously doubt that I will be able to sculpt a cute adolescent Japanese girl with my preferred visual aesthetics. I'm 99.9% positive I will need modders from East Asia to fix that problem.

Isn't this http://i.imgur.com/pSfhrkY.png? I'm sure the facial sculptor will allow plenty of freedom is getting the face and race you want for your character.
