Will I be able to play Skyrim offline?

Post » Thu Oct 06, 2011 6:09 am

You don't even need to install skyrim, just enter the serial number into steam, and you're done.

Dont' Steam games typically have a final bit of data they need to download in order to install/run, when installing off disk? Or was that just for some of them?

I don't think bethesda had the forsight to see that you'd be "locked inside a building with some other people but I am allowed to take my computer with me, there is power there but no Internet access as we won't be allowed to have communication with those outside the building in the real world."
And if you don't mind my saying so, WHAT?! Why?

Thinking about it more generally, it does seem kind of absurd to have an online requirement for a single player, offline, purchased in a store game. Unfortunately, the gaming world keeps assuming that everyone (or, at least, everyone who counts) has a solid, stable, unlimited broadband connection. No matter how irrational that assumption might be.

edit: disclaimer... I'm not anti-Steam. Heck, just bought Portal 2 yesterday. It's great for what it does well, and for people for whom it works well. It's still an absurd requirement for an offline game.

But they promised me they would deliver me Skyrim when it was released, that was the deal.

IC, sounds like you're going on some reality show like Big Brother. Well Skyrim will be around when you get out and at least you have Oblivion or Morrowind.

If you do not have an internet connection on 11-11-11, you won't be able to install the game onto steam.

Will you please read my first post, it's all there.

But I can repeat it for you as you are too lazy to read.. I will be without Internet by the end of this month for 2 months. So that is from 01.11 to next year and the game is out 11.11
And I don't really have that option to take my computer to a place where there is a Internet connection.. not where I am going..

But my question was simple: yes or no to -if- I needed a Internet connection to play a [censored] single player game, and it seem I do.
And I guess Xbox 360 owners (not me) also require a Internet connection, so it's all fair. But what a shame for me.

Xbox 360 players dont need a internet connection as we dont have to register anything.

:(

Very sad now that I won't be able to play Skyrim that is a single player game that can be bought at the local shop because I require Internet for a game that doesn't really use Internet to be played (if you get what I mean)

Big Brother Geek Edition, where everyone just sits there playing their favorite single player game? Doesn't sound like a winner to me :P

Not really, they make this requirement in an attempt to limit pirating and the such, at least that is what I would guess.

What? That is unfair. People pirate Xbox 360 games more then PC games.

yeah, it's kind of stupid, but that's the way steam authenticates that you actually bought the game.

Perhaps so, but I don't make the rules and it wasn't none of our ideas, plus I doubt that is the reason its just my speculation.

Doesn't apply to the OP, but just in general...

There are plenty of people who might do Internet things (read forums, check mail, download patch files, etc) at school computer labs, or internet cafes, or similar places. Whose own, personal, main computers are not online, are not portable, etc.

again you can just take out the hard drive put it in some other computer and activate it from there

The official answer is "yes" but the true answer is no, Steams offline mode is crap, it never works and it still asks for a connection to play the game. This is one of many reasons why I switched my preorder to the console version.

I'm pretty sure PC games get pirated FAR more often and that's why things like online activation for games has become more prevalent.
