Will we always be destined to lead the guilds we join?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 9:56 pm

In Oblivion, each guild had you destined to lead the guild should you complete the quest line, however I would rather simply make a name for myself within these guilds and settle for a respectable high rank, and continue performing tasks for the guild. Of course, reaching the rank of Master should be obtainable in certain circumstances, but I don't want to have it an inevitability, and have to stop the quest line short to avoid having all my leaders die blah blah.

Also, randomly generated arena matches would be nice...a Grand Champion fighting mountain lions...c'mon...I want to fight other gladiators...very good ones...

Your thoughts?

I wouldn't mind being leader so much if it actually meant something, with rewards and ongoing leadership role. Heck, if they'd actually treat me decently instead of talking to me like something they've scraqed off their shoe...

They have you become the leader because it's as cool as hell. I think your problem is that when you become the leader there's not much to do in Oblivion. If they made it so you can actually do stuff like command people once your leader it would be funner then the quests. This game is more advanced so it's an possibility. I agree with you on the gladiator thing.

If we become leader of a guild, there should at least be responsibilities and benefits other than "this chest fills up with gold/items once a month" or "take this note to a certain NPC and get some gold" or "this random nobody will follow you around for a bit". We should be able to control what sort of jobs our guid accepts and how they go about doing it and stuff like that. Randomized quests like what's already been stated to be possible with Radiant Story would also be nice to do or assign people to do as leader.

I agree with OP. There should be a choice on leading the guild or not. I don't want to lead every guild I enter.

I agree entirely. Perhaps it would be wise if Bethesda based some of the features in your main quest line off of your status in the game.. Like a Master of the Mages guild would have a assistance from the guild or neighboring guilds for certain events in the game. A more noteworthy and accomplished character would have much more power and enjoy much more success under dangerous conditions.

For instance, perhaps as the leader of an assassin's guild could have scripted assassin archers taking out enemies during some of the main quest line events. Or as leader of the fighter's guild you could pay your fighters to help you raid important ruins. And with each perk applied the game would balance the difficulty to prevent it from becoming too easy or not enough of a reward.

Well, my problem is that some of my characters would make great leaders and other characters would make great followers...My mage would excel at being Master of the mages guild, as he would bring back artifacts, invent amazing new spells and provide the other mages with direction and scholarship, while my fighter would neither consider working with others, nor care about what others are doing. A leadership role would just slow him down, unless he neglected the responsibility altogether. Some characters just want work, and steady pay, and an axe, to bash some skulls in.

If you wish to not be a leader, just stop questing at whatever rank you want. If somone wants to be the leader they should be able to, instead of being restricted to a lower level becase a few people didn't want to be the leader. Leaders of guilds should have some more responcibiities, and the ability to change some rules would be cool. Some basic quests related to the guild that pop up now and then would allow for even if you stop with the guilds main quest to hold your rank, you could still do guild related activities. Oh, and it should be a requirement to do more than one task to level up. :P I'm fine with becoming the leader, it should just feel a little harder and come with more responcibilities.

But at any rate, we should be able to become the leader of anything we want to. Its the character's world, and we should be allowed to play as we want.

Maybe Bethesda will supplement the main quest line with additional paths based on your leadership in other guilds...so perhaps as an evil character who leads the Dark Brotherhood or its equivalent, you don't feel you are betraying your character by collecting fame points and beating the game.

I can't imagine a guild leader doing many of the tasks that he or she should be handing out to aspiring members...its an issue of immersion here.

No kidding. I, the Arch-Mage, decided to visit one of the city Mage Guilds to buy some potions. As I enter I come across a skinny little Dunmer. Does he welcome me and thank me for visiting their humble guild hall? No. I don't even get a "Hello". I get:

Come any closer and I'll turn your bones to ash. Back off.

I purged all of the Mage Guild chapters of insolent Dunmer shortly after that, starting with him.

Hopefully, we can't join every single guild this time around in Skyrim. As far as rank, I believe they should always offer you the position of master rank if you want it, but it's not a requirement. Remember, we are the heroes of this story. We aren't the Adoring Fan.

Being the leader or taking over a guild should be alot harder and take a hell of alot longer in my opinion. I mean,to come in and lead a guild within a month, isn't a good idea. Some /or most people in that guild have been there for years,it shouldn't be so easy to take that away from them. I don't want to be able to join and complete all guilds in one playthrough either. We should have a choice whether we lead a guild or not,but before that decision,it should take ages to get there. There should be ways to lose rank,or ban your progression for a certain period, depending on your actions.
Or it could take longer for you to rank up,depending how effective you've been in your last quest/job. Say,you did the job that was needed, but it could have been done better, that,in turn effects how soon you get the next rank,if you keep doing half a job on a quest ( not doing it very well ) then it takes you longer to rank up. I think maybe in house tests aswell as quests should test whether you rank up too. There could be loads a neat ideas regarding factions, ranks etc. But don't make it so easy to take over, and don't let us take over ina week or a month. :)

We've yet to find out more on guilds/factions. OXM UK said they( bethesda) were itching to tell them about factions, but want take their time releasing the info. Sounds promising :)

im not sure what you found Cool being leader of a guild in name only. only the player and maybe 2-3 npc's acknowledged you as leader of a guild. everyone else still treated you like a peasant wet-behind-the-ears nobody there weren't even overlying benefits to being leaders other than getting some nameless companion meat shield.

Morrowind went a bit further but the same applies, your leader in name only. if I was leader of the FG I would have enlisted several fighters to join me in gate closing, or closed down Bravil's chapter to buff the one in Leyawiin.

atleast in morrowind certain guilds had you building STRONHOLDS....

Im content going so far in a guild and nothing more UNLESS being a leader has its blatantly obvious perks that make the entire work worthwhile.

and how about a little more meat to guild ranking beyond...just doing quests...you know something even stronger than what morrowind did.

A quest line after one achieves the rank of master would be awesome. On too many occasions did Oblivion have perks in name only. A lot of the "perks" lacked real substance. But yes, if being master meant you were treated as one, had extra dialogue or more topics do to it, and provided characters with an ongoing path as leader, then being a guild master would be very fun. But I mean a real path, not just a salary, not just a follower that you are destined to betray and be fined for...a quest line or interesting and fun advantages.

I've always thought it was a little silly that you could (let alone so easily) become leader of any Guild.

For one thing, leadership of a Guild is a full time job, not just a title you throw at some guy who isn't going to be around much. Lots of paperwork & politics.

For another, the leader of a Guild will be someone who has truly mastered the craft/profession. Someone with decades of experience in all aspects.

Even if I help uncover a conspiracy against the guild (which leads to the death of the current leader) shouldn't there be several other high ranking members with lots of tenure, all waiting for their shot at that job opening? Who may have been waiting for years and years? Sure, reward me for helping out, but the leadership should go to someone who's actually qualified. :D

edit: It's just not..... "realistic" :celebration:

I agree here, and Bethesda got around the tenure thing by simply killing off or dropping the people above you...which I think is a cheap way for you to advance to such a title. IN morrowind, challenging and killing Arch-Mage Trebonius was a little barbaric, but I did like the concept. After you defeated him, your guild wasn't on fire and at half its members like in Oblivion.

I read it, but if the quest continues on it could end up with the fate of the guild resting on the lowest ranked person there. And I like that you through immersion in there too. Immersion is a really overused word. In reality if you stayed at a lower rank, the more important quests wouldn't be given to you, because the administration would look at your rank and give you tasks proper for that rank. The archmage wouldn't give the lowest ranked mage guild member his soul to go fight off Mannimarco. That's not believable. He wouldn't even know your name. He'd look at his table of trusted advisers for the strongest one among them. Maybe the one of them who's been giving you the odd jobs would ask you to tag along, because he knows you are something special, but the high high administration would only get the reports and our name would be as small as our rank.
