There's a dual wield mechanic in the game as well...

Im sure there is a way that is more efficient than putting your weapons away and taking out your hands to cast magic.

Maybe you are still able to ready a spell in one hand but during combat and movement, both hands will be used so you won't actually see the spell until you cast it.

Either that, or two handed weapons have been completely removed.

I think two-handed users won't be able to cast spells while wielding their weapon, but I don't know. :shrug:

Having no two-handed weapons would be a step in the wrong direction for TES

maybee they
- shoot the spell out of the weapon. (unable to attack with weapon)
- breifly holster their weapon (unable to attack)
- hold their weapon in one hand while they cast (unable to attack)

They really need some kind of system to allow 2handers to cast magic. Personally I like my 3rd character to be a battlemage with a claymore as weapon, I'd prefer to cast some fireballs aswell

The way I see it is there'll be a left handed slot and a right handed slot. A two handed weapon will still only take up one slot so there'll be the possibility to temporarily take the 2h weapon in one hand while the spell is cast, but you won't be able to attack while it's being held in just one hand.

I had no problem with Oblivion's way of dealing with this, so I hope for that.

IMO, a two hander should maybe have less magic power behind the spell or an increased cast time, just as a trade off to the reach, damage of their weapon.

I think that you can equip a spell and something else in your hand, because you can equip 2 spells to the same hand, why wouldn't this be applicable to weapons?

We are talking about two-handed weapons here: both hands have the weapon equiped.

A person using a claymore/two-handed sword will not be able to cast spells at the same time. If one is using a one-handed sword, it does less damage, and cannot act as a blocking mechanism like a claymore can. If a person could use a claymore and magic and block, that would be overpowered.

It might just be my terribad memory, but I thought the GI magazine had in it somewhere that two-handers could be used with one hand and one-handers could be used with two hands. Effectively meaning that if one wanted to they could hotkey the ability to use spells to one hand which would automatically put their two-hander into the other hand, and when the user is done with their rabid spell flinging they could go back to two-handed claymore swinging fury.

It depends on the mechanic, and I am guessing the left and right hands will be controlled by the triggers individually. Or the triggers and buttons.
We still may have a dedicated cast button along with independent functions.

Here is something I saw a (long) while back. I hope we see something similar.

PETITION FOR A NEW HOTKEY MECHANISM

Possible system:
Add a designation for D-pad selection-> 24 hot keys, + 16 if buttons are included
-> D-pad (8)
-> Right trigger + D-pad (8)
-> Left trigger + D-pad (8)

Also
player selected functionality:
So on the controller set up you have 2 functions per hand. Could you let us customize those? Keep some standard of course for a default set-up.

Functions: Cast, Attack, Block, Hold
Buttons: L1, L2, R1, R2

Throw = L2(Hold) + R1(Attack) -> Becomes a powerful stab with a weapon
Parry = R1(Attack) + R2(Block)
Gouge that person with a torch = Torch [ L1(Attack) ]
Really defensive position = L2(Block) + R2(Block)
Got fireballs out my behind = Individual cast [ L1(Cast), L2(Cast), R1(Cast), R2(Cast) ] -> Great for casting a bunch of [different] spells in a short time
Disarm / Break Limb = L1(Block) + L2(Hold)
Dual Wielding = Individual Strike [ L1(Attack), R1(Attack), L2(Block), R2(Block) ]
Channel through a weapon (momentarily enchant) = R1(Attack) + R2(Cast)

How about a mage who only casts and blocks? No punching.
Primary for left and right would both be cast. Secondary for left and right would be block. Shields or Iron Cuffs would be optional.
Attacking with a Shield would now be an option.

I also think Oblivion's system worked fine... but maybe they're could be a decrease in spell effectiveness for not using a free hand.

I think you will only have your claymore n dragon shouts, same for sheild users, magic stance will have to be hotkeyed. You still get ur dragon shouts.
