Will Elder Scrolls Online succeed against other 2014 MMOs ?

Post » Sat Feb 15, 2014 7:18 pm

First of all a few words about myself. I am a huge RPG and especially TES fan and i have already preordered the physical Imperial Edition mostly because of the book and statue and not because of the digital gifts.

I am not so much in favor of locking a race and be allowed to go to any faction (always a Breton Sorceror in Daggerfall here :D :D ) but what can you do....

Also i am a fan of MMOs too. I have experience with the subscription model in MMOs as i was addicted for many years to FFXI till Matsui drove me away but that is another story... :stare:

And i also played a lot of MMOs with F2P model like AION and Tera. Both models have pros and cons but that is another topic.

So my main question is this:

Will ESO be successful in the world of MMOs and will it be able to compete with same years MMOs coming to the market (like Everquest Next, Black Desert, Wildstar, Bless, etc.) ? What do you think? Objective opinions please. :D

PS. English is not my native language so i apologise for any mistakes. :D

Wildstar is awful, just awful.

TESO will do alright.

It may just be me, but Wildstar and Everquest Next look way too cartoonish to be compared to ESO =/

Having played the beta for both games, wildstar is a fantastic game. I have pre-ordered ESO already but dont see ESO competing agaisnt wildstar minus the levelling experience and roleplaying.

Some love wildstar and prefer it over ESO, I say to those people seek professional help.

Hard to say.

For me personally it will be the top of all mmos.

For me the setting of the game is the outmost important, if I am not feeling like I can relate to the game I will not play for long. Example I am not drawn in by a world where flashy attacks and "childish" cartoon looking chars run around, and some are super brightly coloured and others have some 2k10 clothing on.

The scenery have to be appealing, not in good looking way with latest graphics. For me it is the "oh whats around this corner, do I see something glittering over there. AH monsters". And when I am walking on the land and you can see some distant mountain or wreck of some kind or a house and it just tingles in you and you want to go in every direction.

Plus the story, most mmos have no story at all and I feel like oh a quest to save your daughter hmm okey fine i'll do it aslong as you give me the exp and gold. except oh that is horrible I must help you.

For me ESO captured this and if this is what appeals alot of other players then it could very well be the best for some years.

Must mention the PvP seems out of the usual and could attract alot of competitive players, aswell as casual pvp. Though a more gladiator style PvP is more attractive to some. Now you must really more on your Alliance buddies.

Of 2014 games it will be first.

I can see it doing ok. Not brilliant, but ok.

I think the console version will struggle against Destiny.

I think Wildstar will show some stiff competition (despite many here disliking it, it too will do ok as it has a following too).

EQNext Landmark I honestly have no idea how well it will do when it gets more content etc, though I'm not expecting it to compete at the same level.

I don't anticipate any of the 2014 games becoming 'WoW killers' (I don't think anyone will kill WoW except Blizzard), and by that I mean huge runaway successes.

I think EQNext is the most exciting upcoming title, for me, in the MMO market but that's a long way off and a lot could happen that could sink that ship too, but at least they are trying something new (we hope).

Bless/Black desert are the ones that look to have the closest connection to ESO, but will be different at the same time.

Tbh....the others are all cartoony types and some of us just can't get immersed in those as much.

So Im sure there is a large enough demographic that appreciate the more mature art style to invest their time into ESO & Bless etc

And only ESO has that TES appeal.

And tbh....for me personally, ESO seems to have the right balance in gameplay.

Wildstar while potentially a good game I just cant get over the artstyle and the combat system.

Overall I think the target demographic is just too different to have an actual competition between the two.

Wildstar is more for the younger crowd with their awesome twitch skills jumping around every 0.1 seconds doing 5345 apms etc,

while eso is more for the older generation with deep lore and somewhat slower gameplay in comparison.

EQ next I dont really believe it will come out this year, it looked good overall (though I hate the cell shader).

And thats pretty much it for the big title "medieval fantasy mmo" genre I believe... so yes I think eso will do just fine.

Both Wildstar and and ESO are in beta. Both games are getting good and bad reviews. Now take a look here http://www.mmorpg.com/ at the "Most Popular Game" Tab. Now compare the number of hits for this month so far.

ESO - 701,948.

Wildstar - 282,684.

It's not even close. Good or bad, the sheer amount of interest in ESO is more than twice that of Wildstar.

I think ESO will prevail but it's still in beta so there's a good amount of time for them to fix, tweak, and add new things. That's why they started betas in the first place, for our feedback on what can be improved or fixed.

Will TESO make money? Yes.

Will TESO keep players? No.

Will TESO go down in history as one of the great MMOs? No.

Wildstar has a sub fee too so it's going to go down the same road as TESO and SWTOR. Also....those graphics O.o ugh.

Copy paste themepark MMOs are everywhere, and yes TESO is a copy paste themepark with a couple new features, as all themepark MMOs have.

EQN has a LOT of potential being one of the first AAA MMOs to come out as a fantasy sandbox. EQN will probably go down as one of the greats if it's as sandboxy as it states it is simply because of it's innovation. It's something we haven't seen yet, which is why it will be one of the greats.

You are aware that the more news released for a title acquires more hits?
TESO has had a lot more press released of late (far closer to launch), thus should have far more hits, as people look at the new information?

You are reading more into that information than exists.

Numbers are numbers. Regardless of the reasons why. You can blame the marketing dept of Wildstar if you like, but both games are at the same stage of development and ESO is getting more than twice the numbers. And in the end, only the numbers matter.

It will probably make it if the consoles ran without a hitch. More playerbase. Now, if ZOS negotiated with microsoft regarding the gold+subscription fee.

I think ESO's gameplay is going to be the biggest drawback of the game on the long run along with terrible developer interactions with the community. Its going to be hard to design competitive pve content around current gameplay design. Personally after playing ESO last beta, i absolutely love the levelling experience because of the immersion provided by full quest voice overs, but the gameplay and animations arent good at all.

I am a bit uncertain about your reasoning so maybe elaborate a bit because here is the thing:

ALL the mmos that have gone down in history as being great actually have a sub fee:

wow

daoc

eve

eq

uo

these are the games that either where extremely successful or are still being pointed to as being great... and now you are saying that because of the sub fee its impossible to be successful when not one f2p mmo has ever gone down in history...

Numbers are numbers, you are right. People's interpretations of them however are not.

They are not at the same stage of development, TESO has a set release date and is currently selling with release less than 2 months away, Wildstar has yet to announce a release date. They are both in beta thats true though at different points in the beta schedule.

Wildstar as it approaches release will get the same jump in numbers as more details are released and their hype machine begins as it has with TESO. If you would have looked at the most popular tab a few months ago it didn't have had TESO at number 1. The figures show people are interested in the game and it has had more recent news articles and discussion on those artlicles, than Wildstar, the rest is your belief in what the numbers represent (those on that site could have checked out both games equally, the numbers don't even show fanbase, merely interest in the topics and news of said titles).

Fair enough, here's my elaboration.

All those games you listed are over a decade old, there's a reason for that. They launched and grew in a totally different gaming market than what exists today, a gaming market where a sub fee was the norm, and competition was scarce. In today's gaming market MMOs with sub fees are competing with DOZENS of quality B2P and F2P games.

It's no wonder you didn't list any sub fee MMO that released in the past several years as one of the greats.

I can see it being very popular with many people for many reasons. Wildstar doesn't appeal to me because of the art style and the game itself just isn't the game I enjoy playing for prolonged time. Elder Scrolls Online. Is. Simple as that. But it will do very well for different reasons wildstar will.
