Will Fallout 4 stand the test of time like Skyrim?

Post » Fri Jan 22, 2016 10:28 am

I would say that one of the things that kept me interested in the game learning about that airship. I put off doing that quest line for a long time for fear of disappointment. When I did it and learned that the Brotherhood built ships like that in the past and they were lost. That had to be the best part of Fallout 4 for me. Basically it confirms the introduction of Tactics is canon.

I also like the Brotherhood in Fallout 4 more than I did in Fallout 3. I guess that's because as you said Arthur has them https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4acAV46vvQ

That's one of the few things I have to look forward to in my post DLC post mod playthrough. I only did one mission for the Brotherhood in my playthrough so I haven't see anyone but Danse and his little crew of rejects.

They can't be compared literally or mechanically, but they can be measured influentially, at this moment in time Fallout 4 was entirely expected; perhaps even somewhat boring, while in contrast Fallout 3 was mindblowing and piquant, a game that felt seminal before time had allowed it to be so.

Out of the gates, there's no comparison to be made; Fallout 3 IS more memorable.

Edit:

Also, based on the psychology of 'anchor and adjustment', Fallout 4 has already made its first and possibly last impression, and only a truly remarkable release of DLC content will even have a tenuous chance of elevating Fallout 4's status.

hard to say until the GECK and DLC is released, as it stands the vanilla game, probably not. Skyrim was a minor cult phenomena though, you can't manufacture something like that, it just happens. kinda like Morrowind, i don't think they could make another game quite like that if they tried, it was one of those freak lightning in a bottle deals.

my personal beef with F4 is that, aside from the crafting system, it doesn't really do anything new. it feels too much like Skyrim 2 sci-fi edition. Bethesda are my favourite developer, and as much as it pains me to say this, i felt let down with F4. not that it's a bad game, it just feels more of the same, after finishing the main quest i never had much urge to keep playing.

i haven't given up hope though, it's not over until the last DLC is released, and it's possible they can turn this ship around.

Am i the only one that finds Fallout 3 to be very dull and average in every aspect of its presentation? I mean i have played it a great deal compared to other games, but not compared to other BGS games. I have actually played Fallout 4 more than Fallout 3.

Well, you obviously don't use mods. Mine says 3282

Fallout 4 at ~400 hours. Incidentally, that's in the same ballpark as Dragon Age 2

Same here too. My friends that were basically rabid for the game pre-release and attacking me for any hesitation don't play the game at all anymore either.

Thanks.

If there is one memorable moment in this game for me, it's the reveal of the airship, but even that is pretty borrowed as well (the MWBoS voyage to the Midwest and all).

I think I'm just frustrated that there was all of this hype and they had pretty much every opportunity to make this game the best possible FPS RPG that they could make but instead they chose to cut down on the RPG aspect and make it have the shelf life of the modern average soulless shooter (seriously, I feel like excitement for this game died about as fast as for Titanfall).

Had they pushed forward with a good writing team making a great, creative story where player agency is what makes it compelling (as opposed to doing the opposite) and giving the player plenty of creative ways through each quest along with the current combat and current graphics (which I was completely fine with) then I could see this game being up there with NV instead of at the bottom of the list for me.

EDIT:

Maybe I'm just biased because it was the first Fallout game I played, but I still enjoy F3 a fair bit. Definitely not my favorite Fallout game (nowhere close) but I'd put it way above what Bethesda's making now.

This, I can remember watching the Fallout 4 reveal trailer with two friends the moment it was posted online, all 3 of us fantasizing about the possibilities during the ensuing weeks (until the E3 footage extirpated my hopes and I became more cynical), and now none of us play it.

I am glad people like it. I was just making a point that not everyone feels the same about games, I know there are metric tons of people right now loving fo4. These forums like all forums about a product are a vocal minority.

On the topic of Skyrim, I did try the game with mods. It even had mods for my... Dark nature... And I loved the concept of that. That screen shot use to would have said 20 hours played. But I forced my self not to long ago to give it another shot. * Sigh * I really wanted to be able to love Skyrim, and have no clue as to why I do not.

Anyways, yes. my point; People that did not like Skyrim will like fo4, people that loved skyrim, will like fo4, people that never heard of neither fallout or TES will like fo4. And the reverse is true on all aspects. I can tell though at this time, there is a huge chunk of people loving fo4. :)

Anyways. Have fun playing, or not playing :)

Yep.

I have a three day weekend and I want to play some Fallout 4, but every time I sit down to start it up I realize I don't actually want to. I want to want to.

Try an Alternate Start of Skyrim. I really didn't give a toss about the Dragonborn thing. The more Bethesda defines your character for you the less of a **** I give.

I am not sure how to judge Fallout 4. Fallout 3 also borrowed heavily from the first Fallouts for it's factions and story. But I played the hell out of Fallout 3. I figure that is because Fallout 3 was the first Fallout since Tactics and I didn't know much going into the game. It had the "New" factor to it and I wanted to know everything I could about it, even after I realized it wasn't what I expected.

Fallout 4 on the other hand, I knew what I was getting into. I only bought it on day one because people hounded me into doing it. The game has improvements over Fallout 3, such as we have a real choices in how to finish the game. I like that the world makes sense and there are far less plot holes in Fallout 4. There's also a lot of little things I am happy were added. Such as bottle caps from beer bottles and wearing clothing no matter what six it is intended for, little things can go a long way.

Edit: So Fallout 3 I played far more of and I was more interested in. But Fallout 4 has more improvements over Fallout 3 but there are a lot of let downs to it.

I like FO4 and Skyrim i just have trouble with the less Content in comparison with Skyrim. I also tried Witcher 3 but i didnt like the walking/running Animations at all, so i stopped playing after 30 Minutes. I just heard how huge it is, and maybe i will give it a try again.

Honestly, I still play it, but only because of the few mods I've downloaded so far (allowing better settlement building etc.)

Without those I would've gotten bored weeks ago. Fallout 4 just doesn't have anything to really 'grab' a player. Sure, exploring the map is fun, but that only lasts until you've explored most of the map, then it just becomes tedious. Quests are dull, dialogue is pointless, and there just doesn't feel like it has much replayability. I enjoyed playing through the main questline the first time, but once its done and you know all the twists and turns...well it just loses replay value.

I'm not just saying this to be a New Vegas fan either. Honestly even by Fallout 3's standards, dialogue and quests in this game are lackluster. Fallout 3's dialogue was, in my opinion, way more interesting than Fallout 4. In which each of the four options are http://i.imgur.com/H9iOvYB.jpg.

Absolutely give it a second try.

There's a new approach to combat that I think you can choose to use or not. There's also a DLC out...I think...or maybe it's about to come out...

It's a lot of fun. It's also unreasonably well written. Any random sidequest in Witcher 3 is better written than Fallout 4.

Edit: Infinite face palms from that image. I'm a living gif.

I don't know, I think it's because while F3 wasn't that creative or anything, it was the first rendering of all of it in 3D, the first Fallout in years, and had some personality to it (even though it mainly came through from refurbishing F1 and 2 ideas and making some weird choices on how 50s everything is and how post-apocalyptic everything looks).

I mean, those little things are nice but I don't think they are substantial enough to elevate an entirely new addition to the series for me. Maybe it's because all of that could have been included in a patch (apart from less plot holes).

You can't make your point by picking the worst example dialog has to offer. Try that with the initial conversations with Codsworth, Preston, Kellogg, Father, or the heart-to-heart talks with companions. The Fallout 3 version of that example would just be "Here you go", they wouldn't have split it up into four different option.

Fallout 4, i really don't care enough to want to want to like it

But the four different options lead to the exact same dialogue. Maybe one unique line of reaction dialogue, but most of the time not even that.

Bored in Skyrim: Think I'll go for a ride and keep the road to Rorikstead clear of Vampires/Bandits/Thalmor/Deer/Dragons/Bears, then head down to the river for some fishing, then head back down the river and do some hunting on the way.

Bored in FO4: Think I'll drink some beer then go rip off Trashcan Carla...

Says something of the story...

You just described how most conversations in most RPGs work, at least when they're not "Let me ask you a series of questions that exist for exposition and have no effect on the flow of the rest of the conversation".

Strange that some people call Skyrim 'epic' yet it was really only mods that made the high value of that game.

IMO the Skyrim trailer was awesome and the vanilla version of the game fell flat after that. Epic. Ha!

I really love the vanilla version of Fallout 4 and it is the most stable game that Beth have released. It will only improve once patches fix the little things and mod tools arrive.

Fallout 4's dialogue, in-general, follows a line segment rather than a branching pattern. You can try to be mean, or sarcastic with NPC's, but conversations by and large continue on the same regardless without missing a beat. The only real exceptions to this being when they throw in the occasional charisma check.
