Will we Finally get Mannequins?

Post » Sun Mar 13, 2011 9:12 am

Remember when you defended Bruma from the Siege Crawler and you got a fancy statue that looked like you and had copies of some of your gear? That was neat. Remember the mod that gave you Mannequins to put your armor on in your houses? Maybe you do, depends on what you played it Oblivion on. Finally, Remember the vast assortment of gear that you acquired through all the factions and quests? You bet you do. I have waited for Armor displays forever, and this is the chance for them to implement it. Here are my ideas, and I apologize for the poll but I was curious.

Max purchasable: 10? Probably not a good idea to have too many in one place. Lag, you know.
Options: Any Race/Gender Combo
Stances: Attack, Block, Self Cast, Target Cast, Touch Cast, Sneak, Victory Pose, Finisher (maybe the generic one used on NPCs), etc.
Customization: Any weapon or armor/clothing you can wear, they can wear.
Portability: Could use basic Radiant AI Packages or basic scripting to move.

What do you guys think? Is it finally time for us to have a better way to display our armor instead of the shoddy game world models that don't look real (at least as far as clothing and Armor)? Would you like to be able to put a model of a crouching Bosmer assassin with the Dark Brotherhood armor, Sufferthorn, and the Blade of Woe equipped? What about organizing two models to make it look like a battle between the Mighty Arch Mage and the Fearsome Mannimarco? I think so.

Displaying armor would be great, though personally, just a simple wooden armor tree would be fine with me :)
I would like to be able to move it where I wanted.

My mannequins mod for Fallout 3 had 16 mannequins. No-one thought it was nearly enough :)!

Lots of stances. People want lots of stances ! Me too :).

Someone will do a mod (heck, I'll do one if no-one else will), but it'd be nice if Bethesda did it properly. Unless you're astonishingly good a mod will never be quite as polished as something done by professionals with access to all the tools.

Doesn't necessarily matter to me if it's a full body mannequin but I would like something as in Assassin's Creed II had a Villa to where it would have a torso that armor was put on, with boots underneath it and weapon racks.

Simple stands as in NotN would be fine. Only one or two in each of the most expensive houses would do, but YES definitely.

Well for a pack rats like me, who like to collect all the game armor and display it in your home, it's a must. I'll be installing the mod, that I'm sure will come out within days (and if not I'll make one) but it would be great to actually have the option shipped in game for once.

Mannequins should just be made of wood and have no identifiable faces. Like the wooden mannequins mod for Morrowind. That does the mannequin's justice because they're wooden and they look like they fit in the world. They don't look like NPCs that are frozen in time.

lol This is generally frowned upon.

*Dragging corpse through the street*

Guard: STOP RIGHT THERE CRIMINAL SCUM! Did you kill this man?
You: No sir, I just found him in the street.
Guard: Well you should have reported it. You may go, leave the body with me.
You: No way! I found him, he's mine! I'm bringing him to be stuffed, and he is gonna go in my living room.
Guard: lolwut?

Oh man I want taxidermy now.

Edit: If they only do generic looking models it would be nice to rearrange them into different poses at any time. Another good addition would be movable Display Cases. Just two separate items, one that has basic physics so you can rotate it and move it, then you can 'activate' it and turn it into a regular object that can be opened and put things in it.

I would be happy with a bunch of placeable wooden stands like the one you can place the KotN armor on at the KotN HQ. The more options I get to display my treasures the better!

Reznod's Mannequins looked like people frozen in time because they are people frozen in time. Only way to get them to wear different armor.

Simple armor stands are really, really difficult to make. If I wasn't a burst modder who keeps losing interest in things, I'd probably have a decent version for Oblivion by now instead of the half-finished version I did create.

Someone should really pick that up and continue it with NifSE.

Well they could make NPCs that use the same base skeleton as humanoid NPCs but have different textures. Then just turn off their AI halfway through whatever animation they are doing and kill them so you can't 'grind skills'.

Heh, yeah. I pinched that idea for FO3 :). But I can't do textures and can't make new body meshes - and as no-one else improved on the mod, I'm guessing not many other modders can either.

Already done like that, and it really isn't satisfactory :(.

Nope, developer made is the best solution by far.

This is exactly what Reznod's Mannequins were. Humans with skin that looked like wood or stone, frozen, with a script that prevented them from being killed or appearing on Detect Life spells.

They did have a creepy effect of moving when you first entered a room, though.

A trick container using pre-placed invisible items that are "activated" (made visible) when the correct item is placed in the container. Works great, but only works for that one particular set of armor. Mine works for any armor, but I never got around to implementing weapons and shields, and I never implemented the NifSE functions....so armor on the stand had skin.

Creepy looking at times.

Doesn't really need new meshes or textures. Just needs some script updates to correct some bugs and to implement a special feature that removes the "skin" portion of the existing models when they are displayed.

Some day my inspiration may come back.

Could you not use an NPC race frozen in time like Reznod's but with a transparent texture instead for it's skin texture, and the skin portions would inherit that transparent texture and be invisible? And then place them over your armour stand model in a pose so that they overlap correctly. And then place a version of the weapon/shield on the floor as appropriate and lock them in place like that "decorator assistant" mod does. Doesn't seem like you'd need NifSE to me.

And, yes, mannequins would be awesome in skyrim, just as long as they look like mannequins and don't have faces!

That almost seems like it would be easier to learn to use NifSE lol. I'm a decent scripter but this makes my skull hurt.

I for one would love to see mannequins or armor stands to be in Skyrim! I've used mannequin mods in Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3 and someone even managed to import my favorite housemod from Fallout 3 to Fallout New Vegas. Unfortunately Bethesda made some 'followers teleport to you' which messed everything up and transported all mannequins to me :(

So I'd really like it if Bethesda would add them themselves. :)

And of course, we don't even know if it'd be possible to mod them in. Will it still be possible to disable NPCs' AI? Will the skeleton/mesh/file formats be the same? Will there even be a construction kit?

Nobody knows for sure .

Doesn't work. The armor mesh will inherit a skin texture from the race entry if if overwrites the existing one, but if you try to use an invisible one it simply shows the one from the armor underneath it instead. Looks very weird since the one on the armor is kind of a "default" skin texture.

You have to edit the armor model itself to point to a new skin texture, or remove the portion entirely. Easy to do and make new models for the stand, but can't be done dynamically (in order to accommodate all mod added armors) without the NifSE functions (which allow you to copy the mesh and edit it on the fly).

edit: I had originally had thoughts about making a race with invisible skin and a wooden mannequin built _inside_ the character and visible through the skin. Not functional at all from what I can tell.

Definately a YES. Being able to buy a house was the first good step. This would be the second. Those lock-cases never quite gave the desired effect.
