Will FO4's Boston Have Any Exposure to Europe or Canada?

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 1:37 am

Consider:

Boston is a port city. One can tell from the preview video that it's done a better job than most in keep itself at least partially functional. In other words, civilization of a sort still exists in Boston.

Now:

The Vikings sent traders and settlers to Greenland, Newfoundland and possibly as far south as the St. Lawrence waterway. If there are any european coastal cities that are in somewhat the same shape as boston or vegas, maybe they might get interested in sending sailing ships to other ports for trade purposes.

The trade could take various forms - agriculture, minerals, finished goods (especially weapons), maybe even technology.

Any idea if this will be evident in FO4? If it's not there now, how about including it in a DLC/Expansion? It might be incredibly fun to have a DLC based overseas.

The only way I could ever see a non-American location in Fallout is with an expansion; American culture is a huge part of Fallout's theme. With the role Boston played in the revolutionary war, and some possible colonial/Revolutionary War symbolism in the main quest, I guess I could see London as a possibility if there's a boat or something that can take us there. Honestly, a large enough boat could be a DLC location on it's own.

Canada would be a more likely candidate for DLC, though, since we annexed it before the war and Ronto (mentioned by Ashur in The Pitt) is supposedly post-war Toronto. But you know, nothing's off the table, and it would be interesting to see just a glimpse of what's going on overseas.

Canada maybe as it was annexed so would have some American culture. Europe? Please no. Vikings had a long development of their skills and sailing, something that's been lost so not really applicable.

The fallout series has always been about exploring the remnants of the american dream. Europe doesn't quite fit into this theme. Being from Europe I would also quite like to see a Fallout like game set in Europe, but it wouldn' be Fallout. You need to have completely different factions (no BoS, no NCR, no Caesars legion), and a completely new backstory. So it would be a completely different game.

Consider how heavly rooted the games are in American culture, I doubt we will see any oversea DLC, maaaybe Canada, but thats a big maybe in my book.

I feel like a DLC could be done outside of the US, if it was done to contrast the American themes of Fallout. A DLC could never offer the same level of detail and lore as a series of games, either, so they could even still preserve a good amount of mystery if they wanted to. I dunno.

I think Europe shouldn't be rulled out for a spin off but it should be it's own game and only once the US is running out of new places to go. Personally would prefer Florida or New Orleans.

Assuming Ronto is Toronto, Canada I imagine that Bethesda plans on exploring the story behind that place at some point, and Fallout 4 is a good a time as any unless they plan on setting a game in New York at some point.

Short and simple, Fallout is about post-apocalyptic America. If we aren't in America, it's not Fallout. It's like trying to explore the Batman universe outside of Gotham City, trying to explore the Lord of the Rings universe outside of Middle Earth, or trying to explore Harry Potter outside of Great Britain. It doesn't even make remote sense as obviously those settings are the very foundation for which the franchise is established.

Someone on here once mentioned not too long ago that Fallout should be in Australia. Folks, Mad Max already exists and is a far older franchise than Fallout... There are just limits that make these franchises what they are, otherwise they would be too broad and ambiguous to make a compelling story. Fallout is about a futuristic America based on 1950s utopian ideals that went horribly wrong and led to the destruction of what was the United States.

Canada is the only foreign nation that could have a possibility of happening due to it being annexed in the lore. Otherwise, China would be the only other possible location because of the great war. It just wouldn't make any sense to leave America when the franchise is based on it and there is plenty that BGS could explore in continental US.

At most, the only place I can see Fallout take place is the continent of North America (although not too deep into Mexico, more so long it's border with the US).

Anywhere else, Europe, Asia, Africa, whatever, would be missing everything that makes Fallout what it is. Almost an entirely different game of its own.

I don't remember where the source was but it was mentioned that Europe was in far worse condition than the US. Tenpenny was said to have left to come to the US and he set up in the CW. So I can just imagine how destroyed and desolate Europe is if he left it and settled in that tower.

I'd say dlc in Canada is likely (there pretty similar and the USA did invade) , a dlc is unlikely but possible could be used to fill in gaps in world history or open up a second game franchise in the same universe.

Issue I've always had with that is just how bad could Europe be if their able to outfit transport to the US. NCR and Legion seem to stuggle and they've been around a while. Then how would they know what state the US is in?

No locations outside of north america.
I would, however, like to hear of events that transpired across the sea, and see (some) immigrants from abroad.

If vikings could make the trip across the Atlantic in wooden boats, I'm sure some idiots in a slightly worn future ship made using 2077 technology could do it just fine.

Also, NCR has working trains, and, if the Fallout bible is to believed, many people have working cars.

Well much like any exodus preradio/television, many probably left for the US in the hopes that "it can't be worse than here"

I'm not sure I even want an expansion set overseas, but I don't believe it's out of the question.

Oh, I would love a game/DLC set in Hawaii. I feel like it would be a great expansion to a game set in California.

Toronto is only 350 miles from Pittsburgh...but 550 or so from Boston, which makes an appearance in FO4 problematic...I don't see how it could really be any other city. Noting that even Ashur felt compelled to remark on their military strength, I would expect Ronto and the "Erie Stretch" to be showing up sooner or later. Perhaps in FO5. It'll be interesting...especially how Canadians here react to however they are portrayed in the Fallout Universe.

Being Canadian, living in Toronto, I'd have to say -- I would not want to see a Fallout DLC set here. Mexico could be cool, though.

The only way I could see them going to Toronto is if the base game was set in Detroit or something. There isn't any major American city, at least not on par with D.C., Boston, or Vegas, near Toronto, besides Detroit.

I also don't expect the Erie stretch to show up at all, same reason why we wont get Great Lanta, those are background lore places, like Clientele, Tuscon, and Irving, from NV, to show that places other then the ones we visit do exist.

What if, instead of having a DLC set in canada or europe, there were instead traders visiting boston harbor from there? It offers interesting possibilities in terms of factions, quests, technology and such.
