will i get banned? i just bought this game.

Post » Mon Mar 17, 2014 5:45 pm

So i was in the zone chat in an area and a bunch of people started hating on this game. I started calling them "fgts" and they all were like "wow low class use better words, gotta test out this report function" acting like good citizens after they were just hating on this game. I don't want to have just WASTED my money getting account banned for that. Will i get account banned for that if zenimax sees it? Or at most like a mute or something?

A. They were correct in reporting you. Find a better insult, or better yet don't insult, ignore.

B. It's unlikely that they'd ban your entire account for a single offense, unless that offense was "I hacked the game/sold game currency for real currency/etc."

C. It's more unlikely that they'll do anything to your account from beta.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, just be conscious of your actions in the future.

I do not think so, but also one should use respect replies. Don't bring yourself to their level by naming calling. Best to walk away, if one gets to mad at them. I had to do that before with ESO hate. That is why I do not use zone chat, I just defend the ESO on the forums and give feedback -- good and bad.

Expressing their opinion of the game, as I understand it, isn't against the rules.

I wouldn't doubt if calling another player a homosixual is against the rules.

Break the rules, get punished. It is a very simple process and doesn't require a lot of interpretation.

The lesson of the day? Disagree, that's your option. But don't break the rules.

I don't honestly know. I can not see an outright ban just for that. But, I am not sure of their policy specifics.

In future I would stay clear of those kind of arguments in chat. Especially if your going to use homophobic speech to respond to it.

maybe but do you agree with the other player that basically said they wouldn't ban me for a single offense and also it's just a beta so they probably will not even bother with something silly like that?

Honestly, I don't have tolerance for the racial or hateful slurs people throw around and am just forced to view them as socially inept....

With that being said, I doubt you will get banned unless you continue to do it and get a ton of reports...

To a lesser extent....that's what /ignore is for.

Will they? Doubtful.

Is it their right? Would they be in the right to do so?

Probably, and I wouldn't be mad at them for banning some player for insulting another player. It wouldn't cause me to think the game developers are being unfair.

I *would* be mad at a company that said insulting each other is against the rules, and then did NOT punish a player who was reported for doing so. Mute, suspension, ban, whatnot. Because that means that none of their rules mean anything, and that they only use it for their own whims or agendas.

THAT kind of thing upsets me.

I've noticed a massive amount of trolls in this beta screaming nothing but obscenities and slurs in addition to bashing the game. In any case each person that has done any of those regardless of what side of the argument they're on I've reported. No need for that sort of nonsense in a game, period.

Why on earth were you so crazy as to use words like that? They were possibly/probably(?) trolling for just such a reaction and you fell for it. I hope you don't get a ban, but either way you really need to learn a lesson from this.

is it not possible i meant the term "fgt" as a bundle of sticks? it cannot be proven i was not using it in that sense technically.

again as i said before, it can be argued i wasn't using it in a hate manner and calling them a bundle of sticks. it technically cannot be proven that i wasn't. so i was calling them a bundle of sticks. it's like calling someone gay, it can be argued i'm calling them happy.

I sure hope so.

Namecalling is petty and childish, but not unacceptable behavior. Using a slur for homosixuals as a way to insult other people, on the other hand, is something that should have marked you as a particularly loathsome person when you were 14 and should mark you as someone with the mentality of a particularly loathsome 14-year-old when you're an advlt. It has no place in a community.

Honestly you need to control yourself in chat. I doubt you'll get banned, but sometimes you just need to ignore what some people say in chat.

Not in that context.

Someone discussing the uses for bonfires, maybe. Not directly referring to another person.

Another hint; you'd get a warning and posting ability suspension for doing that here, too.

regardless of that it cannot be proven i wasn't using it in that sense. Context or not, that is assumed. No one can say how i was actually using the term since they are not me, so i WAS calling them a pile of sticks.

They hate, you reply with hate, they report...

Let's say I am a GM and look in to this report "Guy called me a *Bleep* in the game and I found it insulting"

  • I would look in to the logs ( if possible )
  • I would contact you and the others ( if possible ) and have a nice little chat

But in the end, if anything .. you will get

Spoiler
Nothing
out from this thing or maybe
Spoiler
a warning because of racial or hateful slur

And you would be

Spoiler
able to keep playing as it was
.

Sure sure... were all serious here.

The difference, in my mind, is that I wouldn't (as a GM) err on the side of an instigator. Surely you could have meant a packet of sticks or a cigarette, but I don't really think it's a matter of 'proof'.

Those rules are in place to preserve a pleasant and hate-free atmosphere in the game. It's often seen to be smarter to err on the side of caution (i.e. heavy with the ban-hammer) then allow players to dupe you with lies and continue to cause more players to leave the game due to negative experiences.

And believe it or not, to many people your one word was more of a negative experience than all the negative comments about the games design. It was personal, and the term itself is considered a hateful one in most english-speaking countries today.

But it doesn't matter what YOU think your context is....its what the owners of the game say

Be careful of what you say in public channels. Not even joking about rulebreaking.

A common situation:

- Goldpammer PM: buy gold at

- Player A on zone chat: hey people, this dude is telling me to buy gold at

. Player X: report

- Player A gets banned for being stupid

- Player A complaining on forums because an unjustified ban.

that would be considered THEIR fault for assuming my context. They would need to look at it from an unbiased point of view, which is not assuming.

Nobody in this thread is dumb enough to fall for that, and neither would a moderator.
This is not a court room, so petty technicalities of that nature are useless.

You most likely will not be banned, but actions like that can easily get you kicked out of a guild.

Just use some restraint when talking on an open chat channel in future. Resorting to cheap insults of that nature will not have the effect you desire, it only makes you look silly. Everybody learns this eventually (i made the same mistake when i was a kid), here is your chance.
