Will we have to recharge our magic weapons again?

Post » Mon Feb 28, 2011 9:39 am

One of the most annoying things I hated, was finding a cool magic weapon that was usually only useful in a couple of fights before the magic was gone. Then having to go through the trouble of recharging the thing through a pain in the butt process. It would be nice to have weapons that would regenerate their power or even some way you could feed your characters mana into the weapon to recharge it.

Maybe enchanting a weapon might become permanent in Skyrim, not requiring any recharging. But the enchantment might have to be minor without unbalancing weapons.

I agree the recharging feature in Oblivion was annoying. It'd be nice if in this game they got rid of it and enchanted weapons keep their power no matter how many times you use them.

Here's what I think we should have in Skyrim:

- A basic enchantment regeneration slowly over time, like in Morrowind. Also, the more willpower/intelligence you have, the slightly faster it regenerates over time. This could also be perk-related.

- A few special items that you are able to regenerate enchantments with. This could be filled soul gems, and some other unique item like varla stones, but more suitable for Skyrim.

- A spell which converts part of our magicka into a part of an enchantment regeneration. It must not be overpowered. The amount of enchantment you gain should be small, and the amount of magicka drained by the spell large.

So basically, a combination of both Morrowind's (but also attribute or perk based) and Oblivion's way, plus a new spell.

----------------------------------------
Alternatively, have permanent enchantments. But then we have to seriously limit the enchantments. They would otherwise be overpowered. Also, some enchantments would be too overpowered themselves to have then, like paralyze. Permanent enchantments could work, but I prefer the way I mentioned above.

i agree with the very slow over time morrowind system. i usually had 2 enchanted items for tough fights and one regular weapon for normal stuff. i usually had enough time between using the enchanted weapons that they recharged themselves.

the spell idea is really bad. i used supreme magicka which had that in there and i immediately deleted it from my spell book because it was just too unbalancing. i could see a spell that you cast on a target that slowly absorbs magicka from whomever your attacking and puts in in the weapon instead of your magicka pool but it has to be a very small amount.

weapons with magic have to have a downside. if they dont then it makes them to unbalanced and also makes soulgems moot.

It'll prolly be like morrowind where your enchant skill dictates how quickly the weapons recharge, and how much charged is used per strike. It would make sense seeing as they put the skill back in.

I really liked how Morrowind handled this. Automatically recharges, skill determines how many charges you get.
You could easily run out of charges with weapons, but it wasn't permanent. It felt like a good balance between limited and permanent.

I've been an Elder Scrolls fan since Morrowind, and have been following these forums with interest...but this topic is near and dear enough to me to finally make me register!

Please Bethesda, if you're reading this - do not make us manually recharge items in the Oblivion style. It was tedious and by far the most annoying part of the game (including the Adoring Fan). My personal vote would be for unlimited usage with overall enchantment power reduced. Possibly only very rare unique item would have powerful enchantments. However, a slow auto-recharge would be fine as well - although in Morrowind I was able to carry a few very powerfully enchanted weapons and just cycle them, which was somewhat unbalancing.

Constantly recharging items was always a pain, I like the sounds of weapons recharging over time. Then maybe soul gems could just be used only for the enchantment binding themselves, and a slider in place so you can create a strong enchantment but recharges slower or weaker enchantments that recharge a lot quicker (all the way down to a really really weak enchantment that rarely runs out because it recharges quickly enough).

it wasn't that big of a deal if you made your own enchanted weapons. IE soul trap 1 sec, then whatever other enchants you want. Azura's star worked well with the combo.

It was part of the Enchanting skill in MW
I'm hoping it returns as an Enchanting perk

I would prefer constant effect spells that never have to recharge, it seems easier to balance than having every custom spell available; A player could have a normal sword and then for the tough fights pull out a one use only magic sword and easily win.

Agreed. It would also be nice if they didn't break so easily. Can you imagine Excalibur, or The Sword of Omens, or The Sword of Greyskull or any other famously legendary, or even pop culture enchanted blade breaking after twenty or thirty strikes against normal steel? I think there should be fewer enchanted weapons, but the ones you find (this goes for armour as well) should be very durable.

I agree. Also the option to not automatically cast the enchant on strike would be cool so you didn't always accidentally waste it on low level creatures.

There should be an enchantment spell that repairs your equipment or makes them unbreakable.

i'm cool with both ways, really. start off Oblivion-style and add a mid-level Enchanting perk to enchant future items so they recharge like in Morrowind and everything would be great.

Maybe permanent enchantments with a chance to trigger its effect would be nice.
More powerful effects would have a lower chance to trigger.

Either nerf the enchantments a bit and make them never have to recharge or do it atleast like morrowind. I completely agree, I never used an enchanted weapon in OB because I cannot stand temporary stuff, and it's even worse when I have to recharge it manually everytime

What also bugged me a bit is the message I'd get saying my weapon did not have enough charges.

I completely agree with OP...it was an annoying, tedious system.

In Skyrim, enchanted items should be a lot rarer - you should have to enchant them yourself, or very rarely find them. That rarity should allow them to be perma-chanted. At the very least, have a Soul Gem last a few in-game months, then you pop in a new one. But NOT the old system where after 5 minutes in a dungeon all your weapons have ran out of power!

Dime-a-dozen fiery swords make them less rewarding, make them rare, and make them powerful.
