Will I have to start over?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 6:18 pm

So: First off a quick recap of my character

St 7
Intelligence 7
Perception 5 or 6
Agi 5
Luck 5

Guns 100
Energy weapons 30
Repair 100
Lockpick 75
Science 70 or so
Survival 40

I am running into HUGE problems around the quarry area at level 20. Every weapon I seem to want to use on Deathclaws is useless on packs. Even when using AP rounds, it doesent seem to put a scratch on the huge MOBS of deathclaws that roam the area. I even sprung for the Anti Material Rifle and that works long range but they close on me too quickly. I am thinking my character may not be able to finish the game due to the choices I have made. So do I restart? I tried getting the gobi rifle but my lockpick isint high enough.

Consider investing a little in explosives and plant fields of mines between you and the deathclaws before you open fire on them, mass crippled legs should make it a bit easier once they start the rush.

Absolutely not. I'm a level 28 and have some problems with Deathclaws. To even suggest starting over is rediculous over a few Deathclaws. There hard no matter what. My Anti-Material Rifle blows through them like nothing. Try incenerary. Up close a Deathclaw is a Deathclaw. Beating them close will always be hard.

At 5 luck, the AMR is actually better than the gobi/sniper. But what you should be looking for is stealth boys and/or a silencer for the sniper rifle.

I just wiped out the quarry today, I used the anti material rifle, alot of incenerary rounds and mines(bring as many as you can). I don't think AP rounds have much effect because the deathclaws tough skin acts as armor.
Before you shoot the ones near the entrance (from a very far distance) spot them out with your scope and plant mines to cripple their legs directly between you and the path the deathclaw will charge you from. The further the mines are from you the better, more time to kill the crippled deathclaws. Make sure you are crouching when you snipe to get the bonus damage from a sneak attack.

Once you kill the first 3 deathclaws you can sneak up the closest of the belt ramps up to the top of the tower, plant mines on your way up the ramp(space them out so they don't set eachother off all at once). You should be able to take care of the next couple deathclaws in that area from the top, it may take some patience waiting for the ones below you to walk into your line of fire but it's a safer bet then trying to lure them up from the bottom of the ramp then running up. The mines won't take deathclaws out alone unless you use a ridiculous amount so your gonna need to be quick on hitting them with the anti-material rifle as they charge up the ramp, hopefully you can do it so you are only dealing with 1 deathclaw at a time.

After I cleared the area around the tower(plus another I went to the next belt ramp to the left and partway up you can jump down into a dumpster with a metal ramp inside it, from here you can take out the rest of the deathclaws(with patience) and if they notice you in the dumpster it doesn't matter because they can't get you when your inside it. There are 2 special deathclaws, the alpha male and mother, check the mother's corpse after you kill it.

And save often, deathclaws can kill you fast so you want to make sure you don't have to do it all over if you mess up.

Dont start over just, change your tactics. Not many characters have the capability to take a deathclaw toe to toe. Insanely fast and hit like trucks.

Find a high ledge that is difficult for the the deathclaws to get you. Go to work with the anti material. If you really need an attack boost. Use a stealth boy while long range sniping to get repeated sneak crits, though it can be a bit tricky. Pop some psycho when your trying to take down something so big and powerful.

Keep your distance. Once that deathclaw get within 20 yards, you have serious problems.

Also put boone on the ledge with you and it should be a cake walk.

Anti Material Rifle is what you need, find a nice ledge away from them and pick them off.

In hardcoe mode Deathclaws are a major pain in the ass, much harder to kill then they were in previous Fallouts.

Another option, if the quest that's taken you to the Quarry is a sidequest (i.e, not required to move on) is..... skip it for now, and go do something else.

No need to start over if the game isn't forcing you to fight the things.

(I haven't been to the quarry myself, so I have no idea if the quest is necessary. Almost lv29, finally working on the Strip missions at around 50 hours.)

A great tactic is to go on top of the quarry machine via the belt system (walk up it) and use a ranged weapon like a Anti-Material Rifle with incendiary rounds-sure to kill the beasts in no time.

There's a rocky ledge on the left side of the quarry at the entrance you can climb if you're careful enough, it keeps you out of range of the deathclaws and as long as you bring enough ammo you can pick them all off safely from there. Every other approach ended in death for me so hope this helps.

Whoa whoa whoa, there's a significant price tag attached to this mining facility.

I'm gonna have to bill you. :)

I have to ask , are you using sneak criticals on them ? A sneak critical with a anti materiel rifle one shots them even on very hard for me with 100 guns.

I'm getting incredibly tired of these BS deathclaw stories. An AMR on very hard won't even take a deathclaw to half life without psycho.

On very hard. I use Silencer modded regular sniper rifle with handload ammo at extreme range while unskilled sneaking. 95% of the time only the one that I shoot at starts to come at me and is killed with 4-5 shots before reaching me. If another comes its time to pop chems and hope cassidy will pull her weight too.
