Will Killing Dragons be like Closing Oblivion Gates?

Post » Fri Aug 06, 2010 2:22 am

I think dragon are going to be somewhat akin to oblivion gates. My guess is going to be that right from the start they are not going to be around (maybe a few) and then when you hit a point in the MQ they will show up en masse flying around burninating the countryside, in most cases I'm guessing killing them will be optional and similer to closing an oblivion gate, but a few will be requiered to advance the story. And then at the end of the MQ they will all (maybe a few will be left behind considering their nature) go away. So yeah my guess is they are going to be like oblivion gates. Anyway thats just my wild speculation.

Edit: And I do believe they will respawn, but not the quest related ones.

Yes wonder if it's a limited number of dragons, also hope they don't repeat that they did in Oblivion, Ending the main quest removed the dragons. Yes it make great sense as a story but not as a gameplay mechanism.
In Oblivion it was smart to wait with finishing the main quest until past level 17 and you had the sigil stones you wanted.
In Skyrim people will wait with the end of the main quest until they have all the shouts if the dragons goes away.

That's suggesting that shouts are mandatory and needed to take down a dragon. That would severely gimp certain character builds and playthroughs.

Hopefully it's more like blight monsters. Even after defeating Dagoth Ur blight monsters still persisted and in the story were just considered an epidemic that was starting to disappear. As for dragons being limitless, as each dragon gives you a word, there's no promise that two dragons might giving the same word, and thus making them unlimited.

I hope that the game doesn't force you to fight dragons from the start. Or if they do you don't immediately give you access to dragon shouts. So that if we want to play as not the 'dragonborn' we're able to to.

Unless you try to enter the dragon and close shut it's jaws, by grabbing a stone in a tower inside it's stomach, no, I don't think it will be the same experiance at all...

although that enchanted kidney stone idea got me laughing.

Since the unique weapon Goldbrand seems to have its origins tied with Dragons maybe we can get Goldbrand this time from a Dragon, through a quest or maybe in his gut :)

Did i mention i Goldbrand was my Favorite sword from Oblivion ;)

Sure the first Oblivion gate had its thrill, but after 3 it was a chore.
Lets hope its not like this for Dragons...

I doubt it, unless you have to go inside the dragon, navigate a small island to get into his chest cavity and pull his heart out so you can use it to enchant your armor or weapons. :3

I would think and hope that after you finish the main quest most but not all dragons would leave. My reasoning is that they are animals and once they arive they wont leave unless they chose to or are foced to (killing them or somo other method), where as oblivion gates it makes sence that they would all disapere because they were summoned and bound to Tamriel, and once the thing keeping them there has gone so should they. So I would think at least a few dragons would choose to stick around even if there is nothing left keeping them there.

Not mandatory but nice to have same way as five fortify magic 50 sigil stones was not mandatory in oblivion but very nice to have if you was a mage.

And I believe dragons can be killed the same way as other creatures, yes they probably have strengths and weaknesses but nothing special. A special procedure would kill you if you did not remember it, be unbalanced, quickly be boring and a bug source.

Theres no way dragons could be worse. All the oblivion gates did was throw in a drab new environment and repeat it over and over with the same boring combat mechanics... Dragon fights will be shorter and more intense - more memorable (I hope).

Thats another great thing I forgot about Morrowind. The blight creatures made exploration harder, but not annoying like Oblivion gates popping up in my way...
Although cliff racers did that...

Will this mean that when you progress through the game, more dragons will appear just like oblivion gatess started appearing everywhere?

No, from the podcasts we heard that when you kill dragons you absorb (something?) energy or such from them, as we saw in the trailer. I may be remembering this wrong, but I also recall that killing dragons and absorbing them was a way to improve your dragon shouts...

But I'm 40 going on 41, and the aged mind easily wanders into imagination about what Could be in such an awesome game. :)

Well, Oblivion gates were scripted, dragons are completely random (atleast from what we've heard) and aren't always hostile, with unscripted fights. Possibly like the Oblivion gates but a heck of alot less repetitive and boring and less like a chore.

From the OXM article on Skyrim I read the other day, I doubt it. It sounded like OXM was saying that some dragons just want to mind their own buisness, and won't attack you unless provoked. I'll try to find a quote.

After watching the cinematic for the Nth time i had a thought come to me that when killing a dragon might be like closing oblivion gates.

In oblivion you could close a maximum of 60 Oblivion gates. We might see a similar cap to the number of dragons to fell.

Perhaps you will gain new powers or dragon essence after each Dragon Kill (this might of already been covered).

Any thoughts?

If the dragons are anything like killing a boss in "Shadow of the collosus" that would be epic! I definately wouldent mind 60 of those.

pretty sure you collect words from dragons and dungeons and combine them for shouts and different levels of shouts

Pretty sure that you are right. i read it on a GI article that you will collect words from dragons and dungeons and put them together in many different ways to form shouts. I believe there is a cap of 20 shouts.

As cool as it sounds I doubt you can make 2 dragons fight each other.
Well maybe...Todd did say certain Dragon Shouts can summon Dragons to help you...
