Will Legacy thumbstick controls be included?

Post » Wed Sep 08, 2010 4:18 pm

After searching the forums I have seen all the posts regarding the extensive selection of customizable button layouts.....but does anyone know if thumbstick layouts for console controllers will be adjustable? Specifically I'm looking to see if "Legacy" settings will be supported....I'm looking forward to Brink's release but need to know if I'll be able to navigate comfortably before shelling out $60.

Thanks!

Then your in luck, the controlls are fully mappable on console.
There may not be a controll scheme labled "Legacy", but im sure you can make it to where it is exactly or very similar to it.

Along with a bunch of common game controls, although SD suggests you try to get used to their setup, since they designed it to make sense with their game. I guess legacy wouldnt make much of a difference tho.

Excellent thank you guys. Legacy support can be hit and miss sometimes so if I could play with modern default thumbstick controls I would, but after soooooo many years of playing legacy I don't have the patience to "rewire" my brain like that. I'm very much looking forward to next week!

Nope it's been confirmed that 360 players WON'T have fully mappable controls. *trollface*

Really? because i remember hearing that they will, less than a month ago, directly from the devs.

Whats the point of legacy anyway, everything is backwards, its kinda wierd and i dont see the point of it? If it gives some mystical advantage please tell me.

It evolved from the old FPS games where you only had one anolog stick. Some people got so used to it that anything else feels awkward, and just keep using it.

As Shadowcat says, once upon a time "Legacy" controls were the default controls for FPS on console, and after something like 15 years of playing this way I simply cannot be bothered to spend the weeks/months that would be needed to reteach my muscle memory a different way of doing things. There's no advantage/disadvantage to it whatsoever.

Over the years I have periodically tried to use modern default controls, and the results were probably akin to your experiment with legacy southpaw. I hope Brink does allow Legacy. There have been several excellent games over the years that I've unfortunately passed over because of this.

I can relate. I am personally used to inverted controls, and literally can not hit the broad side of a barn on a console game if its not available.

Similarly, I tried to teach myself to use boxer in halo, to get a bit of an advantage. All it does is switch your melee (normally B) and grenade button (normally Trigger), so that you can keep your thumb on the anolog when you try to melee, which prevents people from getting behind you right when you go to press the melee button. After about 3 days of failure, I gave up.

I also use inverted settings as well. I did mess around with boxer settings in halo for a bit. In theory it seemed like a good idea but in actual use it didn't seem to offer a compelling advantage so I went back to the default. Considering how convoluted my non traditional thumbstick settings are it didn't seem like a good idea to compound the issue with a non traditional button layout as well.

It seems like there's some general disagreement as to what exactly can be adjusted in the control settings. Hopefully we can get some closure on this from the people who have managed to pick up early copies. I've been checking youtube avidly for videos of the game hoping that someone will show the menu settings but have so far been disappointed. I'll keep checking though.

I was lucky enough spend a bit of time with the actual game, and unfortunately this is one of those games I have to pass on.....there is southpaw controls, but no legacy. :shakehead: You do have the option to invert controls. As for the buttons itself you do have full customization of button layouts in addition to the custom presets that Splash Damage has included.

It's unfortunate, I was really looking forward to this. Oh well, I'll check back in a few months and maybe they will have added legacy in via patch. Good luck with the game this week everyone....it looks beautiful and I'm sure you'll all have a blast!

I didn't realize there are people who actually use legacy. I tried it once in Halo CE for the lulz. Me and a few friends switched to it to see who would do the best in an FFA. We all fell off the map multiple times and I think I remember shooting a wall point-blank with a rocket launcher. We came to the conclusion that the setting was best for killing yourself rather than enemies. Apparently we just weren't gifted enough. :(

Lol if using legacy controls makes you gifted it can only be in the special ed sort of way ;)

In all seriousness I'm disappointed but hardly surprised. It seems like I can only count on my controls in the marquee titles nowadays and every other game is a crapshoot. C'est la vie I suppose.

The two anolog sticks are mixed together, so to speak. Left anolog is forward and backward movement, as well as looking left and right. Right anolog is side to side movement and looking up and down.

The controls are nearly fully mapable, but apparently they do not allow you to define the two axis of the anolog sticks separately, which would be required to make legacy.

I just tested Brink with a controller I made a few years ago that physically mods the thumbsticks into a legacy layout and it seems that there isn't any technical reason why legacy doesn't work. I'm guessing SD simply overlooked it during development. Unfortunately years of use/abuse wore out one of the thumbsticks on that controller and it permanently slow-turns to the left. If I have some spare time over the next couple weeks I may buy another controller and mod it so I can play with all you guys.....it's a little irritating since I just recently shelled out for the Razer Onza and I refuse to dismantle the thing.

I have heard that the Onza is actually very easy to mod, you may want to at least take a look at the internals, especially since that would allow you to play any game with your best controller.

I've read that adding those silly rapid-fire chips is stupid easy with the Onza, but I would think rewiring the thumbsticks would be tedious and prone to failure given the extra complication of the tension adjusters. I may crack it open this evening to have a gander at the internals, but unless I really really like what I see I'll probably just hold off until I can pick up a stock throwaway unit.

adapt or die. First time I used an xbox controller to mop kids in halo, it was tough, now its second nature. Mouse and keyboard was all I used for years and years and now I feel just as comfortable with the dual sticks. I actually think im much better with the sticks compared to other anolog stick users (obs not as good as a mouse user but considering their is no interplatform play that doesnt matter), compared to now I svck with a mouse compared to most. besides not having a beast pc that would run brink well, I play sc2 on my laptop but thats about it (maybe a lil cs:s everyonce in a while), i play my shooters on xbox. Considering I was playing cs in beta this may be contary to a lot of people but thats the way it is now and the main reason pc gaming is not as big as console gaming anymore. pcs are too expensive and no one wants to sell out a grand every 6 months just so they can play the newest games. Wish I had 60 fps, wish i had dedicated servers and a server browser, but besides that (god damnit why can xbox get server browsers and dedi?)(bc2 had dedi, but no browser that was wack) id rather be sitting on my couch with my new special edition transform dpad controller (sixy as hell), than sitting at my computer desk. to each his own tho, i remember sitting in front of my computer all summer as a kid playing cs lol. To the Op: if you actually just played with it for a week (you might svck that week) but by the end youll be doing fine. Its really not that hard to learn, certainly far more intuitive than something like legacy controls. Not being able to select that crazy control scheme is a horrible reason not to get this game, no offense. If your not gonna play it than dont play it, but not because of something like this, cmon now. The best thing that coulda been done with Legacy control implementation is having had it never implemented into any game ever so that people like you wouldnt be in this conundrum. Thank god, i never tried it out. I used solitaire on golden eye....

I get what you're saying, but....no. I've heard this 'adapt or die' schtick (or some variation thereof) before and it's advice I will never take. Here's why:

This is a video game. Not war. Not a job. It's a video game. I.E. you pay money for said game in order to be provided with entertainment. Being intensely frustrated due to something as basic as the game's method of interaction is not entertainment....it's frustration. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with the legacy layout. It has no inherent disadvantages compared to the default layout, other than the fact that some developers have chosen to disregard it. I'm not sure why this is. If I can create the layout through a basic hardware modification I can't imagine that implementing it in software requires more than a trivial amount of code.

So here's the thing. I've tried to switch in the past....the results were disastrous. Unlike you, for me default is not easy to learn, and I don't even find it to be remotely intuitive. If I was a kid with an excess of time to kill relearning it might be worth my while. Unfortunately, I'm in my 30's, and while gaming is and has been a lifelong passion of mine the responsibilities of life dictate that I simply don't have the time to devote to the hobby that I once did. I earn a very good living and my gaming room is pretty much the envy of everyone I know, but I work an obscene amount of hours each week. When I do have time to play I want to enjoy the game...not focus on the underlying mechanics of control.

I could play this on PC....I can play with keyboard and mouse without issue and my rig is pretty monstrous so I'm confident I could just about max out all settings on Brink and it would run just fine. But I like Xbox Live. I've been gaming on XBL since it was in beta testing and I have built several exceptional friendships there over the years. No matter how long I've been waiting for this game I refuse to abandon my preferred gaming platform, so it comes down to either passing on the game or finding alternate means of playing. I am prepared to modify a controller so this won't be a problem for me, but I'm not the only person on the planet who plays with this layout. The people like me without the disposable income and/or technical knowledge to modify a controller are going to get left out in the cold, and that's a shame. On the plus side, after a few years of several top developers disregarding legacy and/or southpaw setups most of the marquee games now include it standard. Halo, Call of Duty, GoW, and Crysis have them by default. Hell, even DICE started including these layouts with BC2 and Valve started including it with Portal 2 and these two developers were notorious for ignoring them for years. Hopefully SD includes these layouts in a future patch.
