Will mammoths be hostile?

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 2:56 am

I know mammoths are in, but has it been announced whether or not they'll be hostile to the player? If it hasn't been announced yet, do you want them to be hostile or peaceful?

Why not both wild and domestic Mammoths?

Pretty sure you better keep your distance when you encounter elephants in the wild. ^^

I would assume that they would be hostile because they would have been hunted.

Hostile as an angry nest of wasps and hard as nails, and please no baby mammoths at lower levels, would be as dumb an idea as ogre groundlings. It's a mammoth, it should hurt.

Not crazy hostile immediately, but a good chance of it if you get too curious. Keep your distance unless you are looking for a fight. Just like what I'd do if I saw a real one

I, for one, would like to see them passive. One of the exambles BGS gave for the Radiant AI was saving a Mammoth from a pack of wolves. I don't want to help out only to get a tusk up my backside for my troubles.

The only times I would deem it suitable to see a Mammoth attack is if you attacked first, or you got too close to a baby of the herd and they try to scare you off.

I'm guessing they're generally peaceful, but can be angered.

Only aggressive if you injure them or they're a bull or mother. Otherwise peaceful

I'd say mammoths should be dangerous, and liable to attack you if you're not careful around them, but I'd say mommoths, and really, many other species of animals as well, shouldn't be all jump out of the bushes onto your sword as soon as they see you. Animals should have a level of agressiveness for them, which for a lot of species, would mean they'll generally try to keep their distance from you, but will attack if provoked or cornered. I kind of like how New Vegas handled bighorners, in this espect. Even though they showed up as hostile on your compass, they'd generally leave you alone as long as you didn't get too close, but would attack if you gave them a reason to feel threatened. I wish animals in Skyrim could have this level of believability to their behavior.

Peaceful, but if you get too close they may turn hostile.

They should behave like real elephants. Females should be peaceful unless you approach their young. Males should be territorial, becoming aggressive if you get to close. Think Bighorners from NV

+1 for passive behavior. And if you provoke them to attack you you should be pretty screwed (as they are massive animals).

I'd expect them to be passive, though there might be variations akin to some of Morrowind's creatures - a diseased or enraged mammoth would be a frightening, but really cool encounter, especially if we're used to them being peaceful.

I hope there'll be a limited number of them and that sighting one or more is relatively rare - like with the American Buffalo in Red Dead Redemption.
It makes you more appreciative of the animal.

But I'd like my mammoths to be passive and only aggressive if confronted.

I wouldnt rule it out yet, it would be more realistic if they dont attack you on sight.
because its not how herbivores would react, they will first warn you, and if you dont back down they will attack you.

in oblivion, the animals who attacked you(boars, bears, wolves, lions), is natural behaviour.

I'd like them in between... First I'd like that there are subvariations like big (alpha) male, young male, female, calf. Then, I'd like their behaviour to vary. Big males would be protective and would attack and chased you away if you get close. Females would be mainly passive unless you stay too close for too long, attack or if there's a calf nearby.
Now, for young males, either less aggressive then big males or very aggressive... Maybe less would be better.

Important is that I wouldn't like them to attack on sight like crazy wolves and chase you for miles and miles like maniacs from Oblivion.
Once they chase you far enough (or squash and stump you), they should return to their regular duties.

This, and it should apply to almost all animals. Monsters are a different story, of course.
