Will mountains and hills in skyrim be easy to tranverse

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 5:44 am

Pete Hines said on his Twitter there won't be climbing in the game, that combined with the podcast it paints the image pretty clearly that there will be massive mountains that you can't really move across at all, you'll have to follow paths and tracks up and through the mountain. We'll have to see when the game comes out, but that's what it all points to it seems.

Trudging slowly up a steep slope isn't the same as climbing. Some mountains may be so steep as to be untraversable, but I'm hoping most places will be. I never heard any indication of that from the podcasts.

I would like to see really old and dangerous trails that lead up various mountains. For example, tiny wooden bridges with planks of wood missing, etc.

Morrowind did hills better, because you actually slid on steep slopes. Oblivion allowed you to sprint laterally along am 89% incline. Somehow the game with Havok had worse character physics.

And forcing walk when moving up and down steep slopes in simplicity itself.

I hope it's impossible to go up the actual mountain side and they have actual roads and stuff :)

One of my concerns is how do you trave across the mountains in skyrim, I hated the fact that in oblivion you had to jump, jump, jump until yougot to the top, there were no real roads to the top or around mountains to take, will this be better in skyrim, does anyone know, or haven't they talked about this yet?

thanx

I imagine there will be trails which twist around the mountainside.

Im guessing you can either go around mountains or you can go up and through but it would talk alot of time either way, just going up the mountains would be more dangerous and have more monsters

The jump jump effect to scale a mountain in Oblivion and Morrowind was kind of ridiclous, but then again it would be too easy to climb mountains if we just have neatly done paths. Perhaps they could have realistic scaling of mountains?

Seeing as its mainly mountain terrain they really need to do a good job for this and improve on the dead ends and invisible walls in fallout Nv which was a step backwards compared to fallout and oblivion.

I'm hoping that there are as many paths under and through the mountains as well. Would love to have the undergound world almost as large as the overground, with subterranean cities, temples and ruins.

sigh - we can only hope

One thing who anoyed me in Oblivion was that your character with 100 in acrobatic and agility was unable to traverse hillsides you could climb in real life.

Even your horse was a better climber than you. The horse had the ability to move sideway and up a steep hill while you could only walk sideways and not up.

No problem not being able to climb a real mountain but hillsides with grass should be possible. Yes some animals who are naturally bad climbers would might be unable to follow you wile other might be better.

This is a big deal for me... if there is ANYWHERE that I can't eventually get to... well that's truly an open world, is it?

I'm hoping there are paths through the mountains, tunnels and caves that lead through them, and paths around them. I would love to have to follow a path up a mountain and then make my way through a cave to the other side, it's actually one of the things I'm most looking forward to, even though there haven't even been hints that this is how it'll work :cryvaultboy:.

With this new Havok Behavior engine that Beth have been banging on about, shouldn't we expect to see specific animations for shinning-up boulders and pulling ourselves up onto ledges? I know we're never going to get rock climbing in a TES game, but surely this new animation system should deliver a better sense of upwards movement, yes?

I wouldn't even mind too much if the camera occasionally shifted from 1st to 3rd person to show particular climbing animations, a bit like in the Chronicles of Riddike which that extremely well.

Also, the new dragon shout ability that allows us to teleport - is that context-sensitive only, requiring a enemy npc to teleport next to? Or if we see a semi-distant out-cropping on a cliff somewhere, can we simply 'teleport' onto it?

Climbing hills and mountains in Oblivion is a bit in pain in the you know what least you still can climb them, I hope the we are not having having the same thing in Fallout New Vegas where they have invisible walls in some points on mountains where you thought you can climb on that and something stops you.
