Will mountains and hills in skyrim be easy to tranverse

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 6:38 am

One of my concerns is how do you trave across the mountains in skyrim, I hated the fact that in oblivion you had to jump, jump, jump until yougot to the top, there were no real roads to the top or around mountains to take, will this be better in skyrim, does anyone know, or haven't they talked about this yet?

thanx

I would think easy yet time consuming, having to follow trails and criss-cross around the mountain as you go up. Just a guess though. ^^

If I remember correctly, there were usually properly designed alternate trails or gently sloping areas that you could take up most mountain ranges. You just had to find the right paths. You didn't always have to jump-jump-jump straight up the face of the mountain, or run your horse up a 75o angle.

I think devs confirmed they can't be traversed easily. It also fits Skyrim's own landscape properties, according to existing lore.

They've already said that there are alot of mountains on the map and it makes the map feel alot bigger because you have to go around the mountains to get around, additionally there will be alot of locations on the mountains themselves.

I'm hoping that rather than have it normal with a fixed point where you can't climb anymore, the steeper the slope is, the more you trudge and the slower your movement will be, so you can climb up most angles, but it takes much longer.

I hope it's like Morrowind where it restricts movement. Gives the illusion of a huge world.

Pete Hines said on his Twitter there won't be climbing in the game, that combined with the podcast it paints the image pretty clearly that there will be massive mountains that you can't really move across at all, you'll have to follow paths and tracks up and through the mountain. We'll have to see when the game comes out, but that's what it all points to it seems.

As long as we don't have those ridiculous invivble walls again like we have in New Vegas, i'm happy enough with having to walk around.

Having a cliff in New Vegas that I could clearly jump up on to avoid getting killed, only to be stopped by one of those annoying invisible walls drove me insane.

I really find it annoying that we would not be able to climb mountains. Its like not being able to enter the window of a building as a thief/ assassin character.

This bugged me also. The mountaineous areas were a bit bland in Cyrodiil (thankfully on pc we have the Unique Landscapes though). I think the mountainsides should mostly be steep and untraversable but there should be a lot of mountain paths and passes and meybe underground tunnels that go through mountain ranges. The jumping thing was just stupid, but I doubt they will have any kind of climbing included. I think there was some stuff about the mountains in the podcast, but no mention about climbing, just the fact that most of the mountains are unpassable.

I'd say that traversing mountains should require looking for paths or more gradual slopes, it should be possible to navigate mountainous regions, but it should not be something you can do quickly, unless the game has levitation, of course. Looking at the screenshots we've seen so far, it doesn't look like mountains are things we can just walk up, but if there's a reason we'd want to climb a mountain, there should be a way to get to the top, it doesn't have to be a convenient way, of course.

I agree there. I don't mind using invisible barriers around the borders of the map if putting a visible border there wouldn't look natural, but within the borders of the map, if it looks like I should be able to go somewhere, than I expect to be able to go there. And if I end up falling off a cliff to my doom, then hey, it's my own fault for going off a cliff too high to survive the drop.

Player: "Hey! Can I use that obvious shortcut over this massive mountain to get to Jacobstown?"
Game: "No, you can walk all the way around and get killed to death by some deadly ass cazadors instead."

If you're up to your neck in heavy armor with a battle axe on your back I take it it might be a bit tough, yes. :)

Here's one for you, climb a mountain in Skyrim while walking on your treadmil with the elevation set to maximum. It should feel pretty realistic. Wrap your self in an aluminum foil for the sake of the "armor feeling",too. :D

I would like to see broad valleys that narrow as you travel higher into the mountians and paths that wind upward past caves and ruins, thru a high passd and down the other side. A shortcut that takes longer than going the long route. As in trust me, I know a shortcut you will save miles. Yea right, wolves, bears and ice trolls.

The "Cazador" video just made me realise that a dragon shout that slows down time might actually be TES's version of VATS. Hmh...cool...

Dear God, they're little pricks. They mob you in swarms, and poison you so you die quicker. Not to mention the way they move too fast to hit them without V.A.T.S unless they're right up in your face (killing you) -_-

But anyway, in that screenshot with the dragon perched on a ruin you can see the mountains are far more detailed with proper paths running along them.

I certainly hope not. I would like to keep VATS out of TES entirely.
