Will mountains limit our exploration?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 2:59 am

I'm a tad bothered by the fact that the mountain ranges of Skyrim, bar perhaps the main one where the Greybeards are, will act as natural boundaries within the map and you have no choice but to go around them. Similar to New Vegas.

I hope that the mountains are navigable by paths up to them, as I would love to see clouds and taller peaks poking through them on the summits

A good aspect is that It will mka eht world seem bigger, which is good. New vegas had cliffs sure, but those cliffs happened to also have invisible walls, there was no way to get around those cliffsd without taking the preset path. Which was really bad. I hope for a medium between the boring flat world landmass OB had, and the quite restricting world New vegas featured. Natural boundaries is fine.. but no invisible walls please.

Honestly I feel they used this to seal of 30% of the new vegas map for DLC which made me feel really cheated

The Jeralls and the Valus mountains (to a lesser extent) could all be explored freely in Oblivion, so I don't see why they should limit us.

The mountains in Oblivion were pretty terrible, they were more like glorified hills. I'd like to see some mountains be hard to climb, but of course possible... last thing I want are invisible walls

Based on what was said in some of the new interviews, we will be able to not only go around, but under, through and over the mountains. Will that be the case on EVERY mountain? I don't think so, but the articles do state we can go to the peaks, so in theory, you could just jump off....or levitate.....or ride something.... :whistling:

But yeah, we'll be able to do quite a bit. I'm really looking forward to the terrain and its exploration, now. Even though before I was actually kinda disappointed that TES V was to be in Skyrim because I was not a fan of snow and mountains in OB. It took some reassuring that Skyrim will be a more interesting and beautiful province than Cyrodiil. But I think I'll be very pleased. And of course the comparison between OB graphics and SK's = No competition

I expect that the mountains will be implied boundaries, and that the simplest and most obvious paths will generally be around them rather than over them, but that they'll be freely explorable for those so inclined.

I tend to think that the way they'll be used is to guide new players, but not to limit players later in the game. If you leave town X and follow the obvious path through the valley, you're going to end up in town Y. But if it's what you want to do, you can turn off here or there and go a different direction. But those side paths will be obviously more rugged, narrower, poorly maintained... in some way obviously the road less traveled, and thus the one the new players won't go down. Or at least won't be as likely to go down....

Indeed Todd made a comment about danger (from creatures and so on) growing greater as you go up a mountain.

I guess it will be like a real mountain: climbable, but not from every angle.

I hope we won't e able to RUN up a 60 degree mountain lol. Of course, no invisible walls, but you should have to rely on roads or less steep passages to climb a mountain. Or just levitate ;)

I agree! But with all their focus on better animations, and with mountains being a prominent feature of the gameworld, I'm not too worried this time around. Although even if it is in again it can't possibly look as horrible as it did in Oblivion.

I loved exploring the mountains in Oblivion and Fallout 3, but when New Vegas was released, there were invisible walls everywhere!

Hopefully though, after all the moaning on the forum and the mods to remove these walls, they won't be included in Skyrim :)

If I see it, I want to be able to go there, some how. Period. (except at the boarders maybe, if they decide to use magic walls) Isn't that the idea of open world anyway?

I'm sure you will be able to go through or underneath mountains as well via dungeons to get to the other side.
I'm hoping in some cases the only way TO get to certain places on the map (hidden valleys/temples) would be to go through/underneath the Mountains.
If you have levitate I guess you could just fly over to find them but I think levitate should be a very very hard to get (final) perk that way its more rewarding when and if you unlock it.

Climbing and Levitation or Slowfall\Jump will be very welcome, I have strange feel thats one of mods what Skyrim will have will be scripted spell thats create invisible target actor and use teleportation dragon shout effect to move player to thats actor.

Exploration is a matter of quality; not distance. I'd much rather have a harder time getting from place to place if it's for a more fulfilling experience.

I like the mention of using the dungeons to connect certain areas separated by mountains. Such dungeons could justify the use of respawning enemies as part of the risk of the shortcut. Sort of like the Scorpion Gulch in Fallout: New Vegas.

They did. It's for the third DLC I think. The Great Divide or whatever. Some crap to do with Courier 5 and what not..
