Will NPCs be able to jump

Post » Sun Apr 24, 2011 6:17 pm

Whenever npcs use to run into an obstacle they would either find a way around it or get stuck. Do you think the AI n skyrim will make npcs smart enuff so they will be able to jump over small obstacles obstructing their path?

It was my experience that they didn't really need to much in Oblivion, but if the general AI is so good that they will have something to do with the skill to jump, then I sure hope so!

Why not? If implemented correctly it could work. As long as they don't jump all the time like an idiot.

This made me think...

What other games are there where the NPCs could jump and it wasn't a scripted event...

Haha, It's always been hilarious how none of them could jump. I hope they do consider improving the AI for this sort of thing.

Climbing npcs would fix virtually every "stuck" issue. I hope you can climb in Skyrim.

It's not so much whether they'll be able to jump as if they'll know when to. In Oblivion, they already had the ability to just turn and go a different way, but that sure didn't mean that they did.

It's a pathfinding issue, and we can only hope the pathfinding is better in Skyrim.

Making them jump is easy. Making them not jump like morons is the hard part.

NPC's in Assassin's Creed do a pretty good job of climbing and following you around during your freerunning antics.

Yes, as long as thay only jump to reach you when you're sniping them from a higher place. I don't want npcs jumping everywhere all the time!

Hmm, namely bots in every FPS game that has bots.

Kinda. Their pathing would get kind of screwy if you jumped quickly from one place to another. Whats more you could just climb one building and repeatedly kick them off. Other than being easily exploitable they did an alright job.

^Unreal Tournament 2004 and 3 have bots that can jump (appropriately). Assassin's Creed and Mirror's Edge have freerunning NPCs. Left4Dead has climbing NPCs (those pesky zombies) which assess the hight of the obstacle and use appropriate climbing techniques (there was a interesting paper on it). Bioshock has those spider splicers that climb on the walls. These are just a few examples, I'm sure there are loads more, and I think that different behaviours of enemies like this can make the combat much more interesting than enemies simply running up to hack at your shins.

Speaking of games where NPCs jump, the bot-players in Left 4 Dead do. And pretty well too.

Anyway, I doubt that NPCs in Skyrim will be able to jump, although I sure hope they can.

Agreed.

I want more tactics in combat. Alternatively, there should be an option to fight only dumber creatures that can't jump, if you're not good at it. ?
But even guards that constantly circle the building forever when you are on the roof? Give me a break.

Also some AI should create faulty jump attempts that result in physics based falls.

I hope so. They should make jumping animations better though because i don't want to be looking at Oblivion or Fallout type jumping all the time. It was only tolerable in past games because most people were usually in 1st person anyway.

IMO, NPCs (and PCs) should be able to jump and climb ledges in Skyrim. This kind of thing is done in other games, and i feel it would fit TES just fine.

I also think that you shouldn't be able to jump as high as in past games, but that's a different matter.

There is a whole navmeshing system that's either hand placed or generated. They're not gonna know what's in the un-navmeshed area.

This could be fixed, I suppose, by altering the navmeshing system to allow npcs to jump at certain places.

AC but they used the conditional jumping and climbing commands which are set to obstacles that the player also uses. Something like this would be nice.
