Will we pay for online?

Post » Mon Jul 27, 2009 11:06 am

I really hope they don't take this down the wrong road, making us pay monthly to play it. Do you think they will?

I have no idea. It would be good to make a single payment for the game, boxed version and be able to play without paying a monthly ... Well, but that dream ...

For Fallout Online I would have no issue in paying/month since it would mostly improve the development of the game. Image

Why would it be a "wrong road"? Fallout universe has huge fan base, I dare say that the interest is be big enough to make the game Pay2Play. That is, if the game's quality meets expectations of people willing to pay.

There is an MMO that I've played that had outstanding graphics and played well. The only purchasing involved was for the game, there was no paid subscription. The video game industry is a business though, I'm pretty sure it's going to be pay to play.

Given the history of MMO's I'm guessing it will be paid.

Free to play MMO's are not all they are cracked up to be for the publishers, MMO's cost a lot of money to keep up which is subsidized by the subscription, purchases, etc. This is also why a lot of free to play MMO publishers have multiple MMO's, it helps cover the costs of all.

Lets all stop and be honest and sincerely think about the financial status of gamesas. gamesas makes great games, that is fact. However, it has been a while since gamesas has had a real "hit" on their hands. Having a legal dispute with Bethesda probably didn't make matters any better.

I'm not saying the success of this game will determine if gamesas lives or dies, they will probably live on even if this (god forbid) game does poorly. It is in gamesass best interest to charge a monthly fee. These fees will help pay for a talented dev team to update the game, server maintenance, and to finance other gamesas projects.

A monthly fee is not a big deal. You can come up with $15 a month and go get a game card in the store.

The MMO is far too long in development for it to be a live or die game, I'd say current releases such as Earthworm Jim HD, Legendary Wars: T-Rex Rumble, etc would be more important. The full impact of the MMO will be realized closer to launch when looking at gamesas financially (it's at least two years away from the little we know so far).

There are 2 routes they can take. Make the game "Freemium" or monthly subscription.

My guess is monthly.

I'd say monthly, best way to keep the game in a good paced development and it will keep it alive for a long time.

But of coarse there are those mmo's that is free but you can buy ingame stuff for real money, but I don't like that idea, its like - If you got irl money you are better, if you don't got money you just have to work harder... and you still probably wont get the stuff they get. Image

Fallout Online is going to be legendary so of course I wouldn't mind paying to play. On the other hand I think it would boost it's popularity if it were free. World of warcraft for example, I never played it because they charged 15 bucks a month to play, especially being a person that doesn't know much about WOW I wasn't going to pay to play. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 on the other hand has over 20 million players online right now because it's always been free, look how well that's doing. Either way I'm with you gamesas!

i imagine that it will be a subscription based game almost certainly, with some possibility for microtransactions on top of a monthly.

an MMO using a license as valuable as Fallout needs to generate a big return on its already substantial investment. not to mention, there has been some big expenses for gamesas as far as getting the game to where it is today -- legal, etc. monetizing the popularity of the license is important... they want to stay in the business of making games :) and as a fan who has played most of the gamesas games (Castles was my first), I'm all for supporting them with a monthly subscription.

I'd much rather them make it a monthly fee than F2P, I dont think I've ever enjoyed an MMO without a subscription based model other than Guildwars.

At the very least monthly subscriptions is reason enough for the developers to care about us once the game has been released.

I hope they do charge for online play. More income from players means better servers and maintenance and the ability to put out new content. In my experience free mmo's tend to die fast.

Either way im a huge fallout fan and cant wait for this game!

Fallout online as a free MMO (assuming the client and expansions are bought at full retail) is a gauranteed success, whereas most p2p games that aren't WoW never get far off the ground.

Well it is obvious that the lack of a monthly subsciption would be convenient for us in the short run. However if we do pay there will be mootivation and funds to create updates and bonus content plus it could possibley increase the life of the game.

We will pay for development one way or another. Either we pay for it monthly by a fee, or we pay yearly with new required expansion packs. Either way, it is sure to please! I will happily pay monthly for V13 knowing that it is money well spent!
