I will send $20US to anyone who can fix my game!

So this works? All people with amd/ati HD cards (with issues) should try this. My icons dont rearrange themselves all the time, but you can fix it

If installing the graphics driver over and over again helps, well, it just makes me even more glad i went nvidia :celebration:

But, im happy either way, for all its flaws, NV is a great game (just as with any Bethesda game)

I had a blue screen once after I download a driver via steam. I uninstall and removed it and revert back to the driver that download at AMD and no more blue screen. I think my mistake is I did not removed 11-10 driver and install the 12-10 over 11-10. Do not download any driver from steam. Get it from the proper sites.

Well, I tried re-installing the driver before playing again today. I got 17 minutes. Obviously, that isn't the solution! *sigh*

I picked up a copy of "Machinarium" on sale, and decided to play that, since I was getting very frustrated with FO:NV. Machinarium crashed with a BSOD after less than an hour! *sigh* 2011 is off to a very rocky start for me... I haven't even SEEN a BSOD for years. Well, maybe not years, but a very, very long time. I can't believe the amount of trouble I'm having with these Steam games! I'm really regretting the games I bought while the sale was on.

OH!! And speaking of buying games here, what the [censored] is up with the download times?! 9.4 kbps, 3.6 kbps, 1.9kbps, etc. My download speed (thanks, Speakeasy Speed test) averages around 1.5 MBPS!! I've been downloading Assassin's Creed 2 for five hours, and it's still at 0%! It will take days at this point. How does Steam expect us to put up with this sh*t?

I can sort of sympathise. I'm stuck with 15 gig worth of games to download, and I have a 5 gig data cap on my internet plan. It takes over half an hour just to sign in on steam on dial-up, so downloading 10 gig of games on dial up will take months >_<

Off topic my bad! :bolt:

It's my thread, I get to decide what's Off Topic, IMO. At least, I hope so. If there are forum police to tell me differently, that's fine. But in the meantime, any commiseration is welcome, as far as I'm concerned. Simply having somewhere to [censored] can be cathartic, and I wouldn't deprive anyone of that.
May I ask why you're still on dial-up? I suffered with it for many years (I'm in a very remote area) but once high-speed broadband became available, I was in like Flynn! If I had to go back to dial-up, I might jump off a bridge.

Oh dear--they censored the word for female dog. How bizarre! I wonder if we were talking about dog breeding, would they censor it then? LOL!

II was going to say 'I'm glad you got an hour and a half of game play after removing OpenAL', but then I read the 17 min post. That svcks =/

Though I will say that I have a Radeon HD 5750 and do not have to reinstall my driver every single time. I updated it once with the latest driver (https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/Catalyst_10.12_CCC2_Preview_Win7_Dec7.exe - for Win 7 64-bit), which did not solve the problem. Dot even replacing the .ddl file in the game folder to emulate an nVidia card. My problem was only solved once I removed any and all third party audio codecs.

Phyrie, I know you asked me to tell you from you dxdiag log... but I'll have to come clean: I'm a noob at that. Dont really know what to make of most of it. :sadvaultboy:

I'm curios, is this only with Radeon HD Cards? I have a 5770 and have to install a new driver everytime I want to play.

I'm running dual 5870's and I have never had to do that.

This is not normal. (See my previous statement.) Nvidia have their own issues. Lets not degrade this into an NvidiavsAMD discussion please.

OP, have you installed the Catalyst Application Profiles? May wish to try that.

Machinaruim crashed? WIth a BLue screen? From what ive read you've had issues with fallout 3 and sim game.
I would seriously start doing some hardware diagnostics.
Memory isnt a bad place to start. Since you have windows 7 there is a diagnostic tool built in. All you need to do is click the start menu
and type in the search programs and files textbox "memory". Windows Memory Diagnostics should be highlighted at the top. Select it and click the prompt to restart your computer and check for problems.

Let the diagnostic run to completion.

Are you having issues with any other applications (games or otherwise)? Can you please provide a 64-bit version of dxdiag. Just run dxdiag and click the 64-bit button at the bottom then perform the same steps for posting.

If it's not a hardware issue I'd start looking at a possibly corrupted Windows install or something Windows needs to play the game. (DirectX, C++, etc.)

It's amazing how often a fresh Windows install will fix issues I have run into. It's a lot easier now that I have an image of the drive. It takes 15 minutes to restore my C, E, and F drive (All system required) to a fully working state. (Made immediately after install all the drivers and tweaking Windows to my liking.)

If you do do a reinstall, I'd highly recommend you do the same for ease of future re-installs.

I would have to agree with Wolfpup and recommend an OS reinstall as well

The reason all the downloads are moving soooooo slow is because everyone bought something and everyone wants it at the same time :shocking:

Last night I seriously considered a Windows re-install. If a simple re-install OVER the existing system, instead of a format would do it, I'd do it in a heartbeat. But I am a terrible one for backups, and I shudder to think of all the work that I need to do before a clean sweep!

Here's the requested x64bit DXDIAG text: (I off to run the memory test. Back later...)

Heres some links to updated drivers:

ATI - http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/radeon_win7-64.aspx
(2nd download button from the top)

Gigabyte - http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3162&dl=1#driver (Select windows 7 64-bit from the drop down box)
(download the Realtek LAN driver, Intel INF installation, Intel SATA RAID Driver)

Realtek Audio - http://www.realtek.com.tw/Downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false (click check box and accept)
(download the 8th link down "Vista, Windows7 Driver(64bits) Driver only (Executable file)")

Not sure what kind of mouse or keyboard you have (they both look to be usb). If you have special non-standard mouse or keybaord you should
go to their manufacturers websites and make sure to download the latest drivers for them as well.

With all the driver installation programs above make sure to run them "as admin" by right clicking on them and select run as administrator.
Make sure to hang on to these programs (back them up somewhere cd-rw, usb drive, another hard drive) for future use. Its always a good idea
to make sure your drivers are up-to-date as possible.

About your steam issues, do you have a firewall active? If you use a router, you might need to configure it to disable the firewall. Same with an firewalls on your pc that you have active.

I ran the memory test. No errors.

I wonder about those "audio codecs" that were mentioned. I seem to recall that audio was what was messing up Fallout 3 in the beginning. How do I view which I have installed? I have looked in "Sound Properties" and I see two drivers (I *think* they're drivers!) one for my speakers, and one for "Digital Audio (S/PDIF)", a high definition audio device, whatever the hell that is. I didn't buy a sound card when I had this machine built last year, so I am ASSuming there's an on-board card.

I am in the process of downloading and installing all the suggested drivers.

I left the computer running last night, downloading Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham's Asylum and The Witcher. After 12 hours, only one was over 50%, and two were under 10%! Perhaps I should wait until the pipline isn't so full? LOL!

There is probably an intergrated one. I assume there should be otherwise there would be no sound given out, as far as I know.

It more than likely is the firewall.

Try http://www.speedtest.net/ and post your download speed.

That comes up at about 168 kilobytes per second and there is a thousand kilobytes in a megabyte and a thousand megabytes in a gigabye. If a game is several gigabytes then it will take a long time to download.

Time to get faster internet.

You should only download one game at a time so it gets there faster. Since download multiple things means the download can be spread out and each download only gets a fraction of the download speed.

YOur sound card is onboard. Im having you download a driver directly from realtek. You should go straight to the source since gigabyte (your motherboard) doesnt always maintain the most up-to-date drivers.
Your codecs look good also, you have all the ones I have installed on my machine and none of the codecs known to cause issues.
You should pause 2 of those game downloads and let the most complete download to finish first.

SHould be interesting to see how well those games play on your system for comparison.

Er, no. It's 1.68 MEGAbits per second. You didn't move the decimal over far enough. The fastest I've got from Steam today is 405.8 KILObits per second, but that didn't last long. Steam says to take your average D/L speed and multiply by 8 (they don't say why though) and THAT figure is your speed. So, right now, The Witcher (the rest are paused) is downloading at around 70 kb/s, which, according to Steam is about 560 kb/s, or roughly one third the speed it should be.

At top speed my old connection (about 4 months ago) of 3Mb (Megabits) would go for around 350kb average, then it would go to just over 400 at most. a bit and byte are not the same.

You're right. But my connection is the fastest available to me. And, truthfully, I'm very glad to have it. Well, there IS satellite available, but so expensive as to be unavailable.

Correct, steam usually downloads in KB/s (or MB/s) with a capitol B. Lower case b stands for bits thats often what your internet speed is measured in Mb/s. There are 8 bits in a byte. Which is why they say to multiply by 8. There are 8 bits in a byte.
Phyrie you say the witcher was downloading around 70. Is that kB/s or kb/s captiol B or lower case b? Who is your ISP and what service are you paying for (speed and type)? DSL, cable?

There are two things I can suggest. Either find an area where you can use a fast connection and download or else just wait for the games to download at your current speed.

Even if you have a cousin or something that you trust with a great connection, if you log onto your steam account (this is not certain, you would need to ask on the steam forms to be sure) you can download it and copy the game itself to your steam folder and can play it, since you downloaded it on your account.

I installed all of the suggested drivers, but one. The Intel SATA RAID Driver says I don't meet the minimum requirements to install.
