Correct, steam usually downloads in KB/s (or MB/s) with a capitol B. Lower case b stands for bits thats often what your internet speed is measured in Mb/s. There are 8 bits in a byte. Which is why they say to multiply by 8. There are 8 bits in a byte.
Phyrie you say the witcher was downloading around 70. Is that kB/s or kb/s captiol B or lower case b? Who is your ISP and what service are you paying for (speed and type)? DSL, cable?

Steam says it's KB/S - CURRENT RATE. (Capitals are theirs)

I pay $59 per month for 1 Mbit/s (that's what it says on the website) for wireless (radio) internet. I also pay $10 a month rental for the radio receiver hanging on the house. I wish now that I had bought it when we started, as we've paid for at least once already!

I installed all of the suggested drivers, but one. The Intel SATA RAID Driver says I don't meet the minimum requirements to install.

Not sure about your hard drives. It looks like you have 2 of them? They may both be setup in IDE mode (The sata chip they are connected to is set to IDE mode really).
Windows supports IDE mode so you should be ok. Try fallout 3 new vegas with updated drivers. Can you post another dxdiag 64? Sandwich them between [ spoiler ].... [ /spoiler ] tags
(dont include the spaces in the [ ] brackets)

Steam says it's KB/S - CURRENT RATE. (Capitals are theirs)

Yes so you multiply by 8 since theres 8 bits in a byte. Converting KB/s to Kb/s. Steam speed -> ISP speed

I pay $59 per month for 1 Mbit/s (that's what it says on the website) for wireless (radio) internet. I also pay $10 a month rental for the radio receiver hanging on the house. I wish now that I had bought it when we started, as we've paid for at least once already!

Ouch. I pay 50.00 per month for 8 Mbits down and 1 Mbit up. Im guessing you dont have alot of options though. Charter is my ISP. Is that 1 Mbit/s upload or download? Who is your provider?
If your paying for ~1mbit per second download then the speedtest is accurate. However, your d/l speed will be affected by things such as parallel downloads (other computers or your pc downloading other things), wireless signal strength
distance to the steam d/l server, internet congestion, and perhaps even ISP speed throttling based on traffic (not sure if this applies to you or not), etc.

I forgot to mention you can try to change your location settings in steam. Just get into steam and select the steam menu at the top then select settings. Select the
download + cloud tab and try a closer location in the download region if one isnt already selected.

Thanks for the instruction how to do that spoiler trick.

My provider is a small local company called Twincomm. The only other choice is Xplornet (which is twice the money) or the phone company.

Yes, I have two hard drives. I only bought the components, I didn't actually build it myself, so I don't know what they did when they put it together. I was hoping I wouldn't have to know. I spent a lot of years being a lap top girl, so I thought my mucking-about-in-computer-cases days were over. I decided the old laptop just wasn't giving me what I needed any more, so had this beast built for me in October '09.

I forgot to mention you can try to change your location settings in steam. Just get into steam and select the steam menu at the top then select settings. Select the
download + cloud tab and try a closer location in the download region if one isnt already selected.

Yes, I saw that, thanks. Right now I'm downloading from Vancouver, BC (closest to me). The Witcher is at 49%. *sigh*

Doesnt appear the ati driver installation took. Dxdiag shows the same driver.
10-12_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc_enu.exe sbhould be the file name
http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/radeon_win7-64.aspx

Try these steps:
1. Uninstall any existing Catalysts. To do this, go to Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs in XP or Control Panel>Programs and Features in Vista. Select the 'ATI - Software Uninstall Utility' option (or similar) if available, and click the Change/Remove button. Follow the prompts from there to uninstall your existing Catalysts, and reboot as prompted.
2. When you reboot, you will find Windows will detect your graphics card as one (or more) new devices. It will then attempt to find appropriate drivers for your card. Cancel out and run the installtion file as admin. Follow the instalation wizard from there.

I had to install it manually, as the computer didn't care if I un-stalled the ATI Catalyst. I thought about uninstalling the driver right from the control panel, but a big Warning came up, and made me wonder if I was going to do more harm than good. So, I just installed the new driver and software over the old one.

Question: If I DID uninstall the video card altogether, Windows would find *something* on re-boot, right? It's not like the video would be gone completely?

Here's the latest DXDiag file: I hope I got it right this time!

OOps you do have the right driver installed sorry for the confusion. I would recommend a fresh install anyway.
It wont matter if you remove the catalyst from add/remove. I would recommend you remove the control center as well.
Your computer will find your video card and will attempt to load drivers for it. Just cancel out of this and run the file you download. Remember to run as admin by right clicking.

After I un-installed, the computer didn't ask me to do anything. It just sat there. So I went to the downloaded file and right clicked it, chose "Run as Administrator" and installed the driver software.

FWIW, this is the name of the file I installed: 10-12_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc_enu.exe

THat should be fine then. Windows 7 may load its own driver software silently. Im too used to windows xp i guess.
Sorry for the confusion.

NP.
I just installed and started Assassin's Creed 2. Got as far as loading up Florence(?) and it crashed to the desktop before it finished. The last thing I saw was a man and woman talking under an arch and then, boom! I'm outta there... *sigh* So, it's NOT just FO:NV. Great googly moogly, can anyone tell me what the hell is going on???

This computer should be more than enough to play these games!

its starting to seem like your going to need to do a full wipe to *hopefully* scratch the bug.

because your crashing is happening in multiple games it could mean that perhaps an install somewhere became corrupt, and tracking that down whether it be corrupt driver, corrupt game file, corrupt steam file, corrupt windows registry, what-have-you, will be a pain in the tuckus. (if not impossible)

of course Fallout and AC2 arn't the most stable games in the world so perhaps your just really unlucky :brokencomputer:

That wouldn't surprise me in the least. It's always me who has "this has never happened before in the history of our product" stories. *sigh*. I just CAN'T format right now. It's just too big a job. My mind is boggling just thinking about it... I will, of course, if I MUST! But, DAYM, this just svcks.

well, are other games as crash happy? or is it mostly just NV and AC2?

if it is just those two games it might not be the systems fault entirely, more a combo, which can be a hard pill to swallow :(

So far, it's just those two. Well, Machinarium caused a BSOD last night, but I figure that was a freak. I was so shocked (who the hell sees a BSOD these days!!) I didn't have time to read, let alone capture, the error message! I've only run the AC2 once. I run smaller games with no problem (a lot of HOG's and puzzle type games). I also run The Sims 3 with MATY mod with no problem.

Yes, I saw that, thanks. Right now I'm downloading from Vancouver, BC (closest to me). The Witcher is at 49%. *sigh*

It does load default/generic drivers on reboot.

So yes OP, you will see your BIOS and be able to get into Windows without specific (AMD/Nvidia) drivers installed.

Honestly, you really need to reinstall, sorry. With this many issues there is something serious (In the software sense.) wrong with your W7 install. Something is corrupted or conflicting.

I know it's a PITA to do but you'll be ever so pleased if it works after it's all said and done. Then use W7's Backup and Restore utility to make an image of your system drives so you can be back up and running very quickly next time. (Make sure to get W7 to a state you like, with all drivers installed. eg: I turn off UAC, move my user files to an HDD rather than my SSD, etc.)

Good luck.

How does the rest of your system run? Are other applications crashing or causing issues such as a browser, maybe MS word (not sure if you have it), or some other thing
you happen to use on a day-to-day.

There can be issues with system stability. YOu run sim 3 or puzzle games that dont stress your computer at all. Nor do common apps
such as browsers or word processors (most 2d apps for that matter) even dvd players. Your system was built for you. Theres a big difference between building a system for gaming
and building a system for average computer use.

Reformatting and reinstalling is an option. One i like to leave as a last resort. ALso one that may or may not help. If you feel nervous about doing a reinstall (should you decide to)
YOiu might try to contact the people who built your machine? IF they are still arouund. Or perhaps asking them about troubleshooting the issue as they might have a much easier time
then someone hundreds of miles away.

A few things to try:
run a command line. Start menu and type "cmd" in the textbox. the program should show at the top of the start menu. YOu want to right click it and run it as administrator. In the cosole type Run sfc /scannow
This will verify and repair any corrupt system files.

Have you run a scandisk on your hard drives? Its a good idea in any case to correct filesystem errors. Right click your drive and select properties. Under the tools tab click the check now for error checking. You should scan
for basic errors as well as bad sectors(2 checkboxes). Do this for the drive(s) your OS and applications are installed on. You may be prompted for a reboot. DO so and let the scanner continue on OS boot.

Jeebus, why didn’t you guys warn me that running chkdsk on both drives would take over five hours? Sheesh! I would have run it before I went to bed! I haven’t been able to use my computer all day. It’s alright, though. I am so grateful for all your help, I can’t even say.

I have defragged, cleaned up, and other tasks. I have run a registry cleaner. The memory tests were fine. I think I may be at the end of my choices. Is a format in my future? UGH!! I so don’t want to. But if I must, I suppose I must.

In answer to Jasper, some programs hang up, sometimes. Photoshop does, on occasion, usually when I’m impatient and ask it to do too many things at once. Office crashes once in a while, but that’s no surprise to anyone.

One other weird thing: my printer quit working the other day. I usually have the paper feed from the bottom cassette but it won’t feed from there anymore. I have to run the paper straight through. I have uninstalled/reinstalled it over and over, but it still won’t take paper from the bottom. This couldn’t have anything to do with my other troubles, could it?

I guess I if you’re all out of ideas, I will have to consider a format. I don’t want to. I really, really don’t. But if it will help, I suppose I must.

In the meantime, does anyone know if there’s a user manual for Assassin’s Creed 2? I can’t find one anywhere. Usually Steam has one available for download, but I don’t see where. I never play console games, and the controls are strange to me. There’s some funky buttons in this game!

Well, I did a backup and am semi-prepared for a format. But I played both FONV and AC2 tonight, and no crashes. Admittedly I didn't play for hours and hours, but I am taking it as a good sign. I am not sure I like Assassin's Creed. It's obviously designed to be a console game, and I'm NOT familiar with those. Using all these keys and buttons and moves at the same time makes me feel stupid. But it's a beautiful looking thing, and the acting seems good, so far.

In FONV, I am about to confront Benny for the Platinum Chip, and if I can complete that bit of the main quest, I will be happy.

On the computer front, I've run Spybot, Anti-Malware, Ad-Aware, and a bunch of other stuff. None have found any problems. I almost wish something would find something wrong. Then I could fix it, and be done with this foolishness...

I was going over your dxdiag and noticed the cpu seems to be overclocked somewhat. Your processor is Intel? Core? i5 CPU 750 @ 2.67GHz (2.66 GHZ really). The dxdiag shows your running at ~2.8. Can you confirm this?
Im wondering if there are stability issues via the CMOS settings. Maybe the person who built your PC chose unstable settings (for gaming anyway).

Id like to get a look at the CPUZ of your system. The first tab will show what tyour cpu speed is. You can download the program here -> http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html
Download the latest release. Run it and take a screen shot of the CPU tab. Simply bring up the tab and hit the print screen button on your keyboard (its usually in the upper right area). You'll then need to open paint (just start menu and type paint into the textbox). Simply paste into the paint window and you should see the screen shot you took. There should be a disk icon at the top of the window (or hit ctrl+s). In the save window you should see a save as type drop down box below the textbox for the filename. Save the file as a JPEG image (.jpg). Repeat for the Mainboard, memory, spd, and graphics (3d app dropdown box) tabs. You should have 4 files. Ill PM (your email for these forums) you my email address and you can upload the files to that email. Clcik the little envelope on top in case you dont know where to go.
