I will send $20US to anyone who can fix my game!

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 9:00 pm

I will send $20US to your PayPal account if you can get my game up and running for an agreed upon amount of time, without crashing. I am just a girl (well, girl might be stretching the limits of kindness) who wants to play her game. I just don't know what to do. I am going to post my Dxdiag file (again!!) and if you think you can help, let me know.

Poor ED-E is in Primm, after his upgrade, waiting for me to come and get him! Don't leave ED-E stranded just because my stupid game won't run for more than a minute at a time!!

BTW, if you want to reply to me personally instead of here in the forum, my email address is my user name at hotmail.com. I, too, am careful with my privacy, and also completely understand if you don't want to be seen helping out a stupid woman with her stupid game.

Do you run any mods?
When did the crashes start? Have you been able to play up to now without them?
Do crashes happen in other applications?

A few things you can try (1 file will probably fail to verify dont worry about it):
1) Verify the game cache
1. Load Steam
2. From the Library section, right-click on the game and select Properties from the menu.
3. Select the Local files tab and click the Verify integrity of game cache... button.
4. Steam will verify the game's files - this process may take several minutes.
5. Once the process is completed, the Check Window will automatically exit.

2) update run-times (prob wont help but it wouldnt hurt)
vc2008 run-time sp1:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=A5C84275-3B97-4AB7-A40D-3802B2AF5FC2&displaylang=en

3) Try a clean boot (it could be a background program or service)
clean boot link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
Make sure to test the game stability at the end of step 1 first

4) compatibility mode has helped some (worth a try)
Try windows xp service pack 3

Hey Phyrie.

I was going to reply to you on the other topic we were on, but seeing you created a new one, I'll just as well posted here.
Hopefully it will work as well for you as it did for me. Not a single CTD after making the changes and restarting the computer.

As you might have read on my other http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1153182-18-ctd-in-62-minutes/, I found some audio codex which were not supposed to be installed in my computer. As the game was working fine until a given date, I undid all the internet solutions (edit .ini, add .dll), except for the ffshadow, and proceeded to windows uninstall console, where I looked for anything strange installed on that day or after. The two applications I found were OpenAL and Aud-X.

Try doing the same. If you're the only one how uses the computer, it should be easy to identify anything out of the ordinary. Hope it works! If it does, buy yourself something nice with the 20 USD.

1. There is always 1 file missing. Steam re-aquires the file. Apparently that's normal (according to other posts) Played for about half an hour before a crash this time! Don't think this was the difference, though.
2. Done. Game crashed. See above.
3. Didn't help.
4. Will try next.
I have Windows 7, not XP. My system is current on all updates AFAIK. Then again, you can tell I don't much, right? *sigh*

One thing I will mention, because as I think about it, it may be much more significant than I thought: A while ago (sorry, I can't be more specific than that) my display began to shake during transistions i.e. while shutting down, while loading a large game. I am going to try to get a video of the shake. I'll post it on Photobucket and put the link in a reply here.

One nice thing: I got ED-E back, and managed to finish one tiny side quest before the last crash! I hope I saved in time...

I DO have OpenAL installed. I don't recall installing it, but it's there. I clicked on "uninstall" and it said, "It appears that one or more installed applications are dependent on this program. Are you sure..." . I have no idea what this does, or if I will screw something up by uninstalling it.
I also have something called "Nvidia PhysX". I don't have an nVidia video card, though, I have an ATI Radeon HD card! Could this be the problem? I don't know where this program came from either.

Oh, and I don't have any mods. I have some DLC, just the stuff that I got free for buying in advance (or something like that): some tribal clothing, and a new haircut.

Seriously though, I think I'm going to go ahead and take out those two programs. I'll generate a restore point (though I have my doubts that those actually work) and I can always re-install if I have to.

I uploaded a short video of my computer re-booting. It’s not the best. I guess it’s difficult to capture the monitor with just a regular digital camera. The shake occurs just as the background photo fades out. It doesn’t look as bad in the video as it is IRL.

I uninstalled OpenAL, and played for about an hour. Which is good, sort of. I wish it wouldn't crash at all, but an hour is pretty good. I wonder if I could get two if I took out the Nvidia thing? Whatever it is.

You know, I just re-read that. What else in the whole world would we tolerate if it only worked for an hour? "Oh, that light bulb burned for an hour! Not too shabby..." Or worse, "I got almost an hour out of that TV! Pretty good, eh?" *sigh* How about, "My car only crashes once an hour. Whoopee!" Ridiculous.

I had a look at the Event Viewer and have this error log re: the last crash:

That is the exception code that most people are reporting on this forum. So unfortunately it doesnt tell you much of anything.
How long have these crashes occurred? Did they just start at some point in time?
Are any other applications crashing (games or otherwise)?

It is possible some other game installed the nvidia physX. You could try to remove it however the game that requires it might not work.
YOu wont do any harm removing it. You can simply download the latest version again from nvidias website and reinstall it if you need to.

YOu should check your drivers and make sure they are up-to-date. ATI's website for your video card and to gigabytes website for your motherboard and soundcard.

Sorry I can't help you with your FNV problems. I still haven't bought the game because the patches haven't been good enough yet.
Anyways...getting off track... There is a website called Tweak Guide. You can learn A LOT about the game and Windows 7 itself.

http://www.tweakguides.com/

(this one is helpful if you have a Geforce VCard.

Hope this helps.

Having problems with my HD 5850 card and FNV i think this will help: Have the newest drivers to your card ready for use each time you want to play the game. Install it and launch the game. Each time you exit the game; install the patch when you want to play again. Dont know if it will help you but it worked for me. I had problems loading from a save and this works 10 out of 10 times!!

Do not use the steam drivers to do this! Download them at amd.com. Looks like the game corrupts your drivers when you play.. kind of wierd

Thanks for posting, but I'm a little confused by your instructions. Are you saying to uninstall and re-install the driver for my video card everytime I want to play the game? Once the game is patched, you don't need to patch it again, AFAIK. I don't even know if you CAN patch it twice. I'm willing to try anything at this point (as shown by my desperate attempt at bribery!) and appreciate all/any advice.

May not be relevant at all but did you install most of the files from a disk (retail) or directly through steam (digital distribution)

Did the screen shake start after a driver install/change?

Is there any type of pattern with NV crashing? (ie.... in a small building or house, out in the open, alone, with npcs, random)

If you have any other games do they crash also after extended periods?

Have you been able to run a memory test? (either using Windows or a third party test like MemTest86) crashes *could* be a memory leak

If anything helps/changes the situation it may lead to a solution (or at least a longer play session :) )

P.S. Im curious about Steam always reacquiring that file when doing the verification. Almost curious enough to check mine because i have had no issues and have around 32 hours of playtime and would like to see if that actually might be the issue, but don't know if i want to risk anything lol

I want to say that the Dr. wants you to install your graphics driver each time you play (?)

I wish I could be sure, but I *think* the shake started after a video driver update. It seems to only happen when starting and stopping a game (or exiting Windows).
It seems the game usually crashes while I'm outside, but it has crashed indoors on occasion. I don't think it's ever crashed while paused, or while talking to someone.
Fallout 3 used to crash, but a sound card driver fixed that. Sims 3 used to crash, but it's been stable for weeks now. I don't play any other "large" games right now.
I haven't done a memory test. Don't know how, but I can go and find out.
If the graphics driver is already installed, I wonder if he wants me to uninstall it and re-install it, or just install it over itself? Seems silly to me, but what do I know?

It seems like Dr. just wants you to install it over the existing, sounds like it would cause a few more issues than it would actually fix.

could try a different graphics driver (older/newer) and see if anything changes.

does it ever crash when fighting or are you just roaming around? (might know of some .ini changes but need to look farther into it)

you can run a windows memory test with windows 7 by hitting F8 or F11 (depends on bios) to tell the system you want to go into safe mode. That will bring you to a menu with safe mode modes, select the option "repair your computer" and it will give you options to restore or diagnose system functions

Im still thinking about verifying my cache to see if i have that missing file, the whole "thats normal" doesn't sound right.

Update: well, i verified my cache and steam did acquire one file, and changed nothing so i guess it is "normal"

Install drivers over existing. Download drivers at amd.com.
1. Install driver(im using 10-12_vista64_win7_64_dd(2))
2. Play game.

next day:
1. install driver
2. Play game.
This works for me and is not doing any harm to my system. Fallout is doing the harm as it is corrupting my dear hd5850 when i play....
My problem was loading a saved game--->chrash, it might not work for other issues.

There is something you can try.
You can download a program called debugdiag (from microsoft) and catch the crash. The program will create a memory dump and you can anolyze
this for issues.

Link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=28bd5941-c458-46f1-b24d-f60151d875a3&displaylang=en

Download debugdiag.msi (not the x64 version). You may have to go to the install directory to execute the right program. For me, the anolyze only shortcut is installed in the start menu
but not the debugdiag.exe. C:\Program Files (x86)\DebugDiag <-- It should be debugdiag.exe

Its not too hard to get a crash dump from here. Install the program "as admin" by right clicking. Then run it again "as admin".
If the wizard (select rule type) pops up, you want to run fallout 3 nv before proceeding. Afterwards, select crash->a specific process->FalloutNV.exe.

On the next wizard screen you want to select exceptions at the bottom. On the first chance exception screen select add exception.
Find c0000005 (access violation) and select mini-userdump from the action type drop-down menu. You can also try a full-dump if the MD doesnt show anything.

Click OK and finish out the wizard.
You should see your rule listed in the rules tab. The status should e active and the userdump count 0. Simply go into the game and get it to crash.
After the crash the userdump count should be set to 1. A minidump file is created jsut follow the path listed under user dump.
The mini-dump should be a small file (~200 KB more or less).

On the advanced anolysis tab, add the mini-dump file and click start anolysis. Make sure to allow activeX at the top of IE.
This isnt guaranteed to show anything but its worth a shot. You can post the results here if you want. Make sure to copy all the browser info.

I'm curios, is this only with Radeon HD Cards? I have a 5770 and have to install a new driver everytime I want to play.

Most annoying thing is that the windows symbols need to be rearranged everytime I do this, is there a hint?

I'm sorry, I don't understand what you mean. What "windows symbols" are you talking about?

BTW, FYI for the rest of us: I got an hour and a half of play and actually had to exit the game myself (because I had to make dinner)! I have downloaded the video driver, and left it on my desktop. I have no idea if this is going to help, but I'm willing to re-install the driver each time if I can get unlimited play out of it! It takes quite a bit of time to do it, so you must allow for the extra 5-10 minutes it takes before you can actually start playing the game, though. (When did five minutes become an extraordinarily long time, in the grand scope of things? Funny times we live in...)

The Desktop Icons may all be grouped in the upper left corner of the display when installing a new video driver. There is no real fix for this.

Hasn't been an issue for me, so far, although now I know to what he was referring. Thanks.
