I still don't get why people really really absolutely NEED snipers. I enjoy sniping from time to time, but what is wrong if people want to have games where they won't have to worry about people who they can't see, hitting them almost to death.

Hahaha, I know right? I've heard so many people obsessing over sniper rifles, or rather the lack thereof, that it's kind of become sad. They generally sound like they're having their right arms taken away instead of a weapon type. You know, "Oh no, what will I do now? Without it I'll have nothing! How could they do this to me? I won't even be able to play it at all without my precious OHK sniper rifles! "

It's somewhat disheartening to see so many people that don't want to play at all unless they can kill people in one shot from a mile away, because that's totally fair and doesn't ruin the game for everyone else. :spotted owl:

how about not having sniper rifles in any game? except for games like sniper: ghost warrior.
because, let's face it, a sniper rifle is always OP, shooting from out of visual range(for anyone not using a scope or binoculars) and sometimes even through walls.

it's just too strong for any game that isn't completely realistic, and then you'd need at least hundreds of players, and have convoys bring in reinforcements and such

I'm not even sure what you are even trying to say, there is rifles in the game, that can have scopes.
"shooting from out of visual range" Which game is this? BC2? Travel time, bullet drop makes it so damn easy to avoid snipers.

Any good player will mow you down.

Apart from that we have about no info about how the rifles work, how long time it takes for a bolt rifle to load for the next shot.
So we have actually no idea if this good player of yours will mow me down at all.

Who say's you have to use a bolt? There are apparently semi auto snipers in game. Saw one in a dev diary, I think. It took off chunks of their health, was semi automatic and had high recoil.

There is footage of bolt action rifles in the diary.

So, say to try to quickscope me. We both have the same rifles, semi auto, We are both lights, we have no buffs . You look in, shoot, look out, and rinse and repeat. I look at you and actually aim each shot with the amount of time necessary for me to line it up on you. So, while you miss half of your shots, I'll miss about 2.

Funny though, how you jump to the conclusion that I'm a "sniper" player. All I ever did was discussing a game mechanic.
FYI, I have played SD games since W:ET and I've always been the medic type, in other words smg/ar player.
The more weapons I can spend time on using, the happier I am.

I actually wasn't talking about you. I wasn't talking about anyone in particular. I just happened to be reading the Brink board on GameFaqs (I wouldn't recommend it :P ) and I saw a thread discussing the absence of OHK sniper rifles. Needless to say a good number of people there acted as though the game would be absolute garbage without insta-kill snipers. Like I said, it's rather depressing to see people who only play one certain way and whine incessantly when they can't, blaming the game instead of their own limited playstyle. I can't help but think that Brink may simply not be the game for them. Again, I'm not talking to or about anyone in particular. :foodndrink:

I still don't get your point. If I understand you right you think snipers shouldn't be in any game if they don't work like snipers do in real life?

i'm saying that in wichever game that isn't fully realistic, they're overpowered, and since games should be balanced, they should be left out.

Alright, the timing was quite there so it felt very aimed at me. :glare:
As for sniping, I always prefered the way they did it in Quake Wars, headshot = instant kill , anywhere else would require a 2nd shot. Was more skill into it that way.
It's a shame I don't know how the bolt action rifles work, but the way I think they will require you to be even more accurate than Quake Wars.

They did it with the barret in MW2.

Fine, we both have bolt actions. Same rule still applies though. At a range I would [censored] you if you were only quickscoping. At close range, it is more likely my shot will connect. Medium range, also more likely.

And you will have to take precious seconds to zoom in back on me if you don't kill me in one hit (which the devs say you cannot do by default.)

The rifle at 1:20 in dev diary 5 didn't seem to be bolt action.

If you miss with a bolt action, in most games your pretty much dead. Quickscoping is not as accurate as sniping/aiming or "hardscoping". So, it wouldn't really make sense to quickscope.

You make is sound like I would only ever quickscope if I play with a bolt rifle, quickscoping is situational and is used for short to medium range mainly.
And since you quickscope from short to medium range you should always have a backup weapon, pistol in most cases because they are faster to switch to than other weapons and/or load a new shot for your rifle.

Mmm.. yes, you are right about the rifle in the dev diary. Could seem like a semi auto?

Yeah, it could be, no bolt is seen.

What would even be the point in quickscoping? The game may have OHKs, but I highly doubt there will be reliable OHKs. If a heavy comes around the corner with a rapid fire shotgun, you can't afford to miss a shot. You'll probably be better off aiming in brink and getting your shots out as accurately and quickly as possible.

In that situation no, that's like where quickscoping shines the most. Depending if you hit or not you can chose if you want to run for cover or take him on with your pistol.
To me quickscoping is about mobility, I'm an aggressive player when it comes to fps. I hate camping, it bores me to death so I run around to try to find kills so I often end up in cqc if I play with a sniper weapon.

quickscoping is an exploitation of a game design but it doesn't matter in brink because you use light rifles not sniper rifles. so you can fire with out a scope or iron sight and still be pretty accurate.

Quickscoping is a way to aim weapons close range if they need the scope to be accurate. As many have said before, the rifles in this game will be more like a traditional rifle, and will be accurate without the scope. You're better off just aiming traditionally in a situation like that. But true hardscoping with one if these rifles is also not going to be very practical, as that implies you are somewhat camping and waiting. You will fire one shot, and then get sprayed to death. I'm guessing "snipers" in Brink will be most successful as a guerrilla weapon.

I imagine one of the more effective play styles with them will be light players using smart to run along rooftops, and looking for enemies, when one is spotted, you will take a shot or two, using the scope only for long range, then run off to find another or set an ambush to finish the guy off.

Just because you don't know how to approach a sniper doesn't make a sniper overpowered by default.

It's simple.
Brink = fast paced
Sniper's = camp and slow paced, because of high damage, high recoil, few bullets and Semi-auto. Therefore, Snipers are not intended for close combat. WE, and I'm pretty sure I'm speaking for a lot of people, don't want sniper rifles or sniper players who actually abuse their weapon in close combat.

---------

Ofcourse, you could now say that SMG's can also be used long range if you are skilled enough. It's true, but the game reduces SMG damage over range. On some wolf ET servers, you had to do 6-7 headshots to kill someone with an SMG over long distance, allowing to player to escape. This means a game-mechanic is limiting the weapons from being overpowerd. When you use a sniper rifle in close combat and you keep getting a lot of kills, means that there's no game mechanic limiting your weapon from being overpowered.
To make it short: SMG's get an additional penalty for shooting long range, while snipers don't get additional penalties for doing close combats.

i have seen snipers who need less than a second to aim precisely at you, i'm not a bunnyhop kind, nor am i someone who lies down at the first sight of an enemy. and zig-zagging often isn't enough either

before you say i should dash for cover, a good sniper would choose a spot with few cover between him and where the enemy would come from

I still don't get why people really really absolutely NEED snipers. I enjoy sniping from time to time, but what is wrong if people want to have games where they won't have to worry about people who they can't see, hitting them almost to death.

Personally, I like two playstyles:
One is the very long ranged kind, where I have to use a scope to actually see my target properly.

The other is the most extreme face to face close combat in which only shotguns and melee should dominate.

i'm saying that in wichever game that isn't fully realistic, they're overpowered, and since games should be balanced, they should be left out.

Imho that's absolutely not true. In many games, rifles can totally dominate snipers, because they are just as effective at range. In Bad Company 2, even the Engineer's SMGs can compete with snipers.

Speaking generally, (assault) rifles and SMGs are always the best weapons, because they can dominate both ranged and close combat. If the game allows extra-damage-/ohk-headshots, they do even more.
Furthermore rarely any game actually offers an environment which would allow proper sniping (Bad Company 2 and ARMA 2 do). Usually you fight within a 100m range, which is absolutely not the preferred playing field of a sniper.
