Will Skyrim be better Oblivion?

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 5:22 am

I can think of many games better than Oblivion. (don't get me wrong, I love Oblivion)

But I am sure that Bethesda will do everything they can to improve upon the many (not few) flaws that Oblivion has.

I don't understand how old Fallout fans see classic Fallout's as a holy relic and the new ones as sacriledge, and i don't understand why the same happens between Morrowin and Oblivion. If it's a good game, it's a good game, and for me that is all that matters.

Though i have to admit all Bethesda's games have required some mods to make them work. Oblivion's level scaling, Fallout 3's broken balance, New Vegas' boring world and pointless sidequests. I don't buy Bethesda's games for what they are, but for their potential that is realised with mods. Frankly, all their games unmodded more or less svck :D

Yea.

Oblivion was awesome. It really was. Of course everyone likes Morrowind better, it had a better atmosphere. That's what really matters to us right? At least that's my conclusion. Oblivion had superior combat, graphics, AI, animations, ect. But in the long run, Morrowind was THE elder scrolls game. It was the one that made you feel like you were in a foreign land, ripe with political struggles, a terrible disease that was ruining the land, and a bitter hatred for it's imperial rulers. Oblivion was awesome, but the culture of Cyrodil wasn't as interesting, by a long shot.

We are RPG fans. Improved combat mechanics are important, but we want story more than ANYTHING.

Skyrim sounds like it's going to MUCH better than Oblivion in terms of story. Civil War, we are obviously going to see politics play a major role again, which was something Oblivion lacked. A return of the dragons, with a beth twist. The fact that the PLAYER is the hero again. 6 varied landscapes!! Oblivion had...what...2?

See what I mean?

I loved Olivion, it is still my favourite game of all time. I've spend countless hours playing it, and I've enjoyed every minute and moment with it. I'm sure I'll do too in Skyrim.

I played oblivion first. I cannot get into morrowind no matter how hard i try. Its mainly due to no map markers if it had map markers i'd play it more. I cant get into arena because its annoying to run. Daggerfall is a game i really want yo try but it is way to hard.

Being the weirdo i am, the most important thing to me is gameplay, as such i find Oblivion better than Morrowind, if only for the combat alone. Story just has to give me a reason to do what i do, Oblivion's did it job adequatly. Morrowind had more interesting and unique landscapes, though.

It's the same for me, it's gameplay mechanics are just too clumsy. If i could stop playing newer Bethesda's games for a month i propably could play it, but that's a pretty big 'if' :D

No.

Skyrim will be worse than oblivion and everyone will complain about feature x or why isn't z in the game, and Daggerwind 4 was better.

Sad, but true. I never thought I would live to see the day where I hear that forsaken marketing term "streamlined" and "Elder Scrolls" in the same sentence, but here we are. My all time favourite series is about to be contaminated (further) by the unkempt, groping hands of the mindless masses.

I suppose you're not even a part of the human race?

Elitist [censored]s that speaks of the "dumb masses" pisses me off. You do realize you are a part of the same gene pool as everyone else.....

Newsflash, most people are not dumb, and there are more skills out there than a (sometimes cold and cynical) anolytic mind.

So at this point I think we can argue Skyrim will at least be better than Oblivion for most players. However, things which I think can doom the game and put it in a sort of "limbo" where it's constantly being disputed as to whether or not the game is a worthy sequel (as opposed to a mere upgrade) include:
  • The perks not being diverse enough. I'm not exactly keen on adding a bunch of bleeding/armor modifiers to my weapons, I'd like some simpler things such as speed and damage increases too. More semblant of the old attributes system and also a more gradual and respectable character progression. In the right hands, perks will allow us far greater customization than the old skills system ever did. Yet conversely, if Bethesda messes up, the game is going to play like Arena.
  • A lack of spears. I'm not trolling here - I just cannot think of an honest and believable reason as to why you wouldn't reinstate one of the most popular hunting weapons and one of the most frequently used martial weapons by mankind.
  • Radiant story not being what it's cut out to be. What if that instance of a deceased shopkeeper's store being inherited is but one of its kind, and specially scripted at that? As soon as we walk into town, will we be approached by four different women all telling us to rescue their kidnapped children? I seriously doubt that as Bethesda has had experience with procedural variety before, but still.
  • The dungeon locking system. I'm not entirely sure, but Morrowind's scaling was preferable to Oblivion's and New Vegas' was preferable to Fallout 3's. I'd rather we just have a world with minimal level scaling. Outside of quest balance, I don't see what the hell benefit Bethesda gets out of filling half of their dungeons with locked levelled list enemies.

Without a doubt it'll be better than Oblivion. If everything we've been shown is in and done right then imo it will be better than Morrowind which is the best one yet imo.

Really? Care to name some?

Terrible Level-scaling (including leveled uniques, something that should never ever happen.)

Magic Compass taking away any effort needed to find anything

No unique items placed outside of quests

Bland setting

higher level enemies taking ages to kill

I don't think many would disagree that these were major flaws in Oblivion, there are also tons that I personally found as flaw but are subject of bigger conflict, like the fast-travel system.

Umm... Yeah... I was asking for a list of games that is better than Oblivion not problems that don't break the game. I agree about the unique items though.

Yeah sorry about not specifying that. So, do you care to name some better games that are not other Elder Scrolls games?

It's an Elder Scrolls game. Of course it will be good. =)

It already sounds better than Oblivion so far (and I LOVE Oblivion and it's way better than Fable III, which I also liked). The errors from Oblivion I did not even notice too much until the hardcoe fans point them out.... And even then, I don't take it to heart and act ticked off about it and denounce Bethesda and "mainstreamers", lol.

The devs are trying to improve on Oblivion's errors, so it's already on the right track (in my opinion, anyway). Also, they can't please everyone (especially since there are so many people polling on different sides of the spectrum). I think the devs can never compete with memories/nostalgia of Morrowind (or older ES games), so I wish them luck on making the best FUN game possible instead of becoming a Morrowind/Daggerfall/Arena 2.0 copy.

I will definitely buy it sometime in the future when I can afford it.... and so will most everyone else, too, lol, including the ones who are complaining so much about it! XD (If you don't like how "mainstream" the ES games are becoming, then don't buy them and give the devs tons of your hard-earned money, lol! Isn't that how the business model works?)

In summary: I will be optimistic and hope for the best. We still do not know too much about the game and I can't wait for more details!

Of course I'm not part of the human race. I'm Dunmer, Duh

What does being part of the same gene pool as everyone else have to do with anything? That doesn't even remotely imply that we are all equal.

Save me your utilitarian banter. "Dumb" is a relevant term, and yes, since everyone is dumber than those who are smarter than them, it's a fact that most people are dumber than those who are generally "smarter", ie possess above average intelligence. So, from the perspective of someone who is more intelligent than the norm (even if only mildly so), then yes, most people are in fact "dumb". What most people think is right isn't necessarily right in the absolute sense (In fact it almost always is not), and that's why I worry for the fate of Skyrim.

I'm sure it will be better than Oblivion, it's not like that would be difficult. Whether it will surpass Daggerfall and Morrowind is a whole other story though, we'll just have to wait and see.

My god, a great majority of you are getting so upset over this game that if you had the option to have its production canceled right now, you probably would.

Save yourselves a bunch of stress and just don't buy it. It's unhealthy, not to mention a major bummer to those of us who are excited for the mere fact that another Elder Scrolls game is coming out.

Oblivion was a better game than Morrowind, in all aspects that come with the course of the time, like a more advanced engine, and new technologies, and with this trend, we can be sure that Skyrim will be a better game in all those aspects, like these:

  • Better graphic Engine, and visuals.
  • Better NPC AI and schedules.
  • Better physics, animation, and traps.
  • Better Combat mechanism.

In those features we can surely say that Skyrim will be better than Oblivion, which is better than Morrowind.

=== === === === === === === === === === ===

But, if we strip Oblivion and Morrowind from those aspects of a game, then what do we have?

Oblivion: Generic lush landscape that was mostly flat and visible from one end of the game world to another, generic dungeons, less quests which mostly have more detail, less hand placed loot and monster to create unique encounters and rewards. Level scaled monster that eliminated the need to level up the character. Absolutely no under water life and detail, straightforward main quest with no twist, conflict and surprises, and no conflict between factions, and rivalry between clans, and few examples of choices and consequences, factions that required no minimum player abilities so that a non-magic based character could become the head of mages guild, if he liked. Hand holding mechanism in every aspect of the game to help enlist non-RPG games toward as the potential buyers, and in doing so, diminishing the sense of progression and triumph after winning over the dumbed down challenges and game environment. Full voice acting, badly implemented with the few voice actors.

Morrowind: More exotic and diverse landscape, with hand placed monsters and items to make a unique discovery or encounter after each hill, manually created dungeons that, felt a bit more unique than Oblivion's, although not much. More hand placed encounters, loot, and misc items, like letters, that gave a different life to each dungeon, cavern and surface area, and a lot of underwater content, ready to be explored with rewarding challenges, some unforgiving game mechanism that might initially scare more casual players away, but ultimately would result in more rewarding experience if you could master it, a lot of inter-faction conflicts and inter-clan/great house rivalry, complex main quest with a lot of twists and surprises, demigods that people love, but will be found out to be cheating bastards. Minimal voice acting, done right with enough voice actors.

More unique sense of culture of every town, faction, and clan, and a lot of consequences for player choices, especially in the factions, and faction requirement to prevent non-suitable members become the head of them, no wide spread hand holding, so that it encouraged players to chose strategies for survival, and think about their problems, and be set back to try again when more prepared, which resulted in more sense of progression and triumph, when they finally they could overcome the initial difficulties.

=== === === === === === === === === === ===

From what I have listed, and from what we are shown till now, it is not possible that Skyrim become a worse game than Oblivion, as they have already said that they want to bring back the unique sense of culture, and the faction conflicts back from Morrowind, and they have proven with FO3, that they can make games with better level scaling and unique/random encounters, and events, and also better dungeon and places with more detail and a story behind them. Not to mention the new character leveling that I like a lot.

This brings it back to Morrowind standards in those aspects, if implemented right just like what they have announced. But because if the constraints that full voice acting places over developing stories, dialogs and quests, I do not raise my hopes high, regarding the quest and story aspects. But on the other hand, with a look at their new staff, and the funds that they have now at their disposal, those constraints are not that important.

So in the end, I say that there is no doubt that it is a better game than Oblivion, and in some parts, surely a better game than Morrowind. As for the rest, we shall wait and see.
