I remember reading about when they were cutting stuff for Oblivion, it was just because "we can" or "people didn't really use it anyways".
Now when they're cutting stuff for Skyrim, we get explanations on how it will make the game better. We also get stuff added, like dragon shouts, dual wielding (weapons and spells), perks, etc.
The tone is very different, and I like it.
Oblivion's only problem in my opinion was the level scaling and the loss of uniqueness to the world and the lore. It looks like they're fixing both of those problems. Oblivion was, however, much easier to play and flowed better, as well as having a larger variety of quests. As for whether or not Skyrim will rival Morrowind, that of course remains to be seen. Morrowind removed a lot of the miscellaneous skills and character creation from Daggerfall, and had a smaller world, but was a lot more unique and rich, focused and enjoyable. I saw Oblivion as a successor to Arena/Daggerfall, and Skyrim could be a good successor to Morrowind. As other people have said though, Morrowind made such an incredible impact in gaming and will still be played and cherished for years to come. It's art. You can't really rank art.
