Will Skyrim be better than Morrowind?

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 8:50 am

Oblivion started my love of TES games.

So, I decided to play its predecessor because everyone said it was better than OB.

And it was. I love that game. I've been playing it for the past 4 months, almost non-stop (its even funner when you don't use any guides), though my schoolwork has taken a big hit (I do online homeschooling, and have motivation problems).

So, I think we all most of us agree that MW is better than oblivion in almost every way (content, quests, spells, armor, depth, etc).

Though, I liked oblivion, after playing MW, oblivion just didn't seem fun anymore.

But, as long as Skyrim is on par with Oblivion, I'll be happy.

I'm hoping it will be a good mixture of MW and OB.

This will not end well.

I guess I hope so. If it has a story and landscape as compelling as Morrowind, and builds on the combat improvements that Oblivion brought theres no reason why it can't be

Combat improvements? Oblivion was a veritable hack an' slash. Combined with level scaling, the combat was easy and boring (though, MW's combat wasn't much better).

And maybe this thread was a bad idea, I've got a bad hangover, so I'm not of right mind right now.

If they make it as fluid and organic as the devs say it will be
while being as vast and having as much lore as Morrowind
I will be sufficiently sold on which is the better game

I hope so, but somehow I doubt it. Better than Oblivion definitely though.

This is such a dumb question. We dont even have any legit gameplay. How are we supposed to know if Skyrim will be "funner", at this point.

I can't understand posts like this regarding Morrowind's landscape and how there is so much to explore. I have been re-playing both Morrowind and Oblivion since the announcement of Skyrim and probably one of the worst things about Morrowind is the landscape. It is empty and boring. The ground looks like cement and there isn't much of anything. People always boast about how Morrowind was "hand-crafted" and everything hand placed. Well I sure hope so cause if they randomly generated the few trees you encounter that would be pretty sad. Every time I play Oblivion after playing Morrowind I am impressed about the vivid landscape and all of its details. Now before your put on your nostalgia goggles and go on a rant after reading this, Im not saying that I liked Oblivion over Morrowind or vice versa, all I am saying that when it comes to landscapes Morrowind doesn't even compare.

You seem to be the type that think "Graphics makes the game".

And I do agree, oblivion's graphics are better, but it was bland.

It had
-Trees and grass
-Caves
-Ayleid Ruin
-Forts
-Oblivion planes (that all looked the same)
-Cities (that all looked mostly the same)

Morrowind had a lot more variety, swamps, volcanoes, forests, and a lot more, I can't even name them all off the top of my head.

I had to pick "other". From everything that I've seen, Skyrim will be a better "combat" game than Oblivion, which was a better "combat" game than Morrowind. What I'm getting a lot of bad "vibes" about is that it may be a worse RPG than Oblivion, which was a worse RPG than Morrowind.

If you're a "hack&slash" player, Skyrim will probably be everything you ever wanted in a video game. Bethesda is apparently putting a lot of development effort into getting combat "right".

If you're into RPGs and "meaningful" choices and character development, this might be a pretty bleak year ahead. Substituting "perks" for "attributes" is probably a lateral move; the underlying problem is that the effects of skills and attributes on the character outside of combat really seem to have been ignored in the last game, or totally replaced in effect by mini-games, and are being downplayed in the little bits of info that we have of this one. Of course, we won't know for certain until it's released, but it's starting to look a bit grim.

To some players, it will be a "better" game. To a large percentage of the old fans of DF and MW, the series has taken a hard turn in a direction that we have a lot less interest in.

I voted for other. Will have to wait and see. Love Morrowind. Hated Oblivon for the fist month so I stopped playing it. A month later I played it and then loved it, so have to try Skyrim for a bit to be able to judge.

All I know is I will take it as a sepearte game not Morrowind or Oblvion 2.0.

So have to try Skyrim 1.0 and then complain about the bugs lol

It'll probably be A LOT better than Morrowind. But yeah, I agree that Morrowind was overall better than Oblivion... much better.

I think Morrowind is overrated. It's a good game, but oblivion is more fun and much more user friendly. Morrowind annoyed me with its clunky combat system, outdated graphics and the fact that you had to walk constantly. Anyway, to answer your question I believe Skyrim will surpass both its predecessors.

every thing you listed is not the fault of the game, but of the time it was made, Oblivions Graphics/Combat does not make it better than Morrowind, if Morrowind was made today keeping its philosophy of the past, it would Curb stomp Oblivion Hands down.\

Skyrim will like all the other series be good in some aspects, and svck in others, I just hope it takes what oblivion/morrowind/daggerfall all did right and run with it.

I hope so, but I doubt it. The case with the majority of casual gamers, is that Morrowind doesn't really appeal to them. Hopefully it is a nice blend of MW and OB.

Looking like Skyrim > Morrowind > Oblivion to me.

Sure they're cutting more stuff, but LOOK AT IT! It's beautiful, and sounds like such a good game. I was excited since it was released, but contained because I knew so little about it and it was so far from release.

Now that new info keeps getting released, and the months are passing, I'm finding myself really start to lose the battle with anticipation.

For me graphics dont make the game at all. The majority of the games I play are open-world sandbox type and graphics have little effect on how much I enjoy them. There are alot of things I praise Morrowind for but the landscapes just aren't one of them. I just find it funny how because people like Morrowind they are unable to criticize its short comings. Oblivion had swamps, mountains and forests too...the reason you can't think of them off the top of your head is because there wasn't any.

I never played morrowind, but the way some of you go on you might as well stay with morrowind and ignore these forums and future TES games.

I think the single thing I'm most worried about in Skyrim is three-minute dragon fights. I can't imagine wanting to fight anything for three minutes, myself, even if the combat is done spectacularly. But my favourite part of Oblivion is buying all the houses, and my favourite parts of Morrowind are progressing up the selection of guilds whose orientations, motivations, and goals most closely match my character's. The combat was always the means to the end I was seeking, for me. It's difficult to imagine my taste changing in that regard, and I fear that Skyrim may be too combat-intense for me to play for any length of time. A pity, if it's true, because I was really (and am still) hoping for a more stable game to play all the time.
I'm also a little worried that I won't be able to gimp my character from the beginning of the game and enjoy the process of overcoming that with time (my current Morrowind character is an Orcish mage), but if that problem is in isolation, I'll live.

After reading the confirmation that attributes are removed, it ranks on my expectation-bar between Morrowind and Oblivion.
But I hope for a surprise.

By the way you mention you never played Morrowind, you might as well ignore these forums as well. How can you be on the TES forums and never have played Morrowind?
