Will Skyrim Be On HD-DVD, Blu-Ray and/or multiple DVDs?

Post » Thu Dec 02, 2010 9:13 pm

the 360 has HD DVD, the PS3 has Blu-Ray and computers can install multiple DVDs or use blu-ray. i want so much data especially in the area of expanded voice acting and hi-rez textures and more locals using specific meshes/textures instead of one size fits all. i hope this game is huge and i hope it is so huge that it takes me several hours just to install.

Unless Bethesda wants to do a Multi-Disk approach, the 360 size limit is around 12GB I think? So that's the max. For a mostly unstructured game like the TES games are known for, I don't think a Multi-disk approach would bode well.

I dont want hours to install, I am taking the day off work and will have to wait until 8.45 when the kids leave for school to play it so I want to be running round in the snow chased by dragons by 9.30 latest.

I will be shocked if it is more that 1 DVD. they said that it is the same size as Oblivion (1 disk) and they have made a new and more efficient system to run it.
Count of 1 DVD for the Game with Possible 2nd DVD put out later with the expansions like the Oblivion GOTY edition

As far as I know HD-DVD's can only be played through a seperate player that connects to the 360.
The Base console only supports regular DVD's

A game can output HD-quality video, without having been run or installed from "HD" media.

can you do multiple DVD on the consoles.........i know you can install them on the harddrives and i think i saw 120 GB for the 360 and 250 GB for the PS3. forgive me if these are stupid questions but i havent owned a console since PS2 and im not getting a PS3 for another week or so. since most people install their games on the console drives anyways why wouldnt multiple DVDs work?

Thats really small... better compress though low rez textures for 360!

I wouldnt mind 40 gigs of content like OP said, though thats a little extreme and dont think any game is that large. I just dont want them cutting stuff to make it fit.

This.

It will be on DVD for 360 because that's all 360 supports. It will be on Blu-Ray for PS3 because PS3 supports it and it is superior than DVD.

Why? The ONLY advantage a blu-ray has is it can hold 25GB per side. That is it. HD quality is ONLY limited by space. A 1080p HD movie DOES NOT need a blu-ray except the fact that it is a ~10GB file and no standard DVD can physically hold it.

Maybe because my PC has a blu-ray drive and I don't enjoy fiddling around with multiple discs during the install?

I would also like to not need the disc every time I play the game. Idk have the installer create like a 256-bit encrypted key in a hidden folder or something.

optical media will be dead after next gen, anyway. we'll be using 256gb flashdrives with zero-day platform locking within ten years.

until then, i really wish more games would use multiple discs. the fact that we've been stuck with more or less the same size limit since the PS2 is really kind of embarrassing. i mean [censored], consoles have HARD DRIVES now. why not use them? GTA4 came on two discs for PC and nobody complained at all.

two discs for Skyrim - one with the game data and textures and meshes and everything, and one with all the voice acting and sound effects. whichever requires more work to stream off the disc gets a mandatory install.

I would also like to not need the disc every time I play the game

this is why games use Steamworks.

Problem is a lot of 360s didn't have hard drives, or very small ones at that. Which I imagine is a large enough market for Bethesda to not want to miss out on. Because it's such an open, non-linear game world as well, it's not like you could just swap discs half way through either.

I don't think a single player game will be 40gb's.. Some MMO's aren't even that much!

I don't want Steam to be a requirement to play the game. Sooner or later someone is going to release a crack for it, I would just rather have it on the disc, or at least via a verified download with unique key.
