Will Skyrim Be As Good As Minecraft?

Post » Fri Jan 07, 2011 9:01 pm

im actually serious. im afraid to go into caves and stuff because i might get attacked by a giant spider right out of a SNES game. :) the textures are god awful but this game actually creeps me out for some reason. as soon as it starts getting dark i race to one of my safehouse (i have around 5 of them now) and i not only close my door but i put a stone block in front of it just in case something might be able to break through. the [censored] spiders are the worst. i had myself hold up on a really high clife and i had two spaces open to look out and see the view. i had the stair on the far side so nothing could walk in.....what i didnt know is that those things can climb and while im cooking my porkchops all if a sudden i get attacked from behind and barely survive.............freakiest thing since amnesia. i love this game. i hope skyrim makes me afraid to go into caves as well.

Skyrim and Minecraft will likely never be compared together.
Edit: The developer of Minecraft, and the developer of Bethesda are almost entirely opposites, on the "indie game vs real game developer" scale. If Minecraft somehow enters the same category, and defeats, Skyrim, - video game development as we know it will topple

I hope so. It's one of the scariest "OH [censored] I"M GONNA DIE" games I've ever played. I totally can't mine too deep or I get freaked out and run back to the surface to cover myself in mud and wait for sunlight.

I think minecraft is so boring. It's fun for a little while, but the novelty of it wears off pretty fast for me. I'm not too into just building things, cave diving can be pretty fun but it again it gets boring pretty fast. If there were like NPCs to talk to and quests to get, it'd make minecraft so much better IMO.

I only got to play the free version of minecraft so far, but I just got a job again so that may change. But you can't really compare the two as they are on uneven grounds in every regard.

I've only played minecraft a handful of times and i know it can be quite fun to play with a few friends, but i don't really see how you can compare it to skyrim. Skyrim will probably have next generation graphics (or at least i'm hoping so) which really allows you to have a feeling of what's happening around you is real. Obviously you won't be able to build things like in minecraft but i never really cared about that anyway. Minecraft has a lot of potential to become an epic game though, but it still need way too much work.

Well, you can't compare the games as they are different in pretty much every respect.

Minecraft is ridiculously fun though, I'm playing on peacefull right now (no monsters) as the building is mainly what I enjoy. I started with a small cave on the beach that turned into a rather large underground house. Then a very deep tunnel into a mine complex that had to be closed once I dug too deep and fell into an enormous cave, I wandered around down there for literally hours before I managed to dig myself back up to the surface, breaking ground and seeing the sun shine down on my fave has never been so satisfying.

I've now built a huge castle above my cave home, which is connected to my underground complex with a mindboggling network of tunnels, ladders, staircases and doors. I built a pretty tall tower to be able to see my home easily, then once the castle had become too big for it to matter I built another one, I'd like to make it taller, but the game won't let me :P The clouds are actually floating through it at about the middle.

Oh, and I made giant floating letters with torches on them that spells "Urge" in the sky. Because I'm humble like that.

Can Skyrim beat that kind of fun? There's no way to say honestly, as I said the games are so different. I love creating stuff, so I don't know if Skyrim will beat the feeling of having built a huge castle by hand, but it'll probably be awesome in other respects.

On the current path that Skyrim is going? No.

If Skyrim decides it wants to be an RPG again? It's possible.

That said, Minecraft is an excellent game, and is definitely one of the true gems that shows that graphics don't always matter. It's about the gameplay, and about the experiences you have with it.

Build your base underground and have a shaft going to the surface for daylight.

Those games are getting rare, yeah. Daggerfall gave me such moments, but I never really had those with Morrowind or Oblivion. I think the games with those best moments are the first two Thief games released about a decade ago.

So yeah, it would be nice to see it in Skyrim too :)

Minecraft is the first game that actually brought out my fear of heights. I climbed on top of a mountain, built a few blocks out, looked down and said "enough of this noise" before climbing back down.

To be honest, I would definitely like to see some kind of this realism....there are millions of these threads about though, sayign about more realism and Bethesda needs to realise that's what people want -- that's why I'm considering getting morrowind (in the morrowind section) because of better gameplay.

More on track with the OP I really want dark caves with spooky music that force you to use a torch to see things -- Oblivion was way too bright. Even if it was just a harmless rat that jumped out at you, if the place was pitch black, it would be scary.

furthermore, now that we know the player is forced to equip weapons/tools to only two hands including magic, dungeon diving takes on a whole new strategy. Do i waste a weapon slot to use a torch to light up the room, or go into the darkness with a shield and sword?

That kind of realism would be very much appreciated and something Oblivion desperately lacked.

Lighting in Oblivion was defiantly.. interesting, there were many times where I thought areas should be darker, but just as many that should have been lighter. It appears Skyrim intends to fix many of these problems. I also hope to see a return of placeable candles and lanterns in Skyrim.

A lot of the fear factor stems from the way Minecraft handles death and saves. There are no slotted saves to load, just an auto-save function and a map file. You die, respawn and hope to god you can find your PoD before items disappear - hours of progress can be lost. Of course there is no forgetting the darkness, and that which lurks within... the heralds of your demise...

If Skyrim wants to compete with Minecraft at the very least it needs dungeons with real darkness... not just an overcast day darkness. It could also do with some good old fashion pits of lava, those always keep people wary. :P

For me it will always be Minecraft when I want true immersion.
If Skyrim goes to plan I may fit it in between Farm Ville: Zombie Uprising - Homestead Burning and Peggle + rumble controler

yeah, i fount that out on my second game. i figured that the gold and diamonds would be buried deep so i just started digging straight down, right into some lava. now i dig diagonally. :)

i wasnt even aware that you could go back and get your stuff..........would have save me a few hours but since the game is so much fun i actually dont mind.
