Will skyrim have katana's / cutlesses?

Post » Mon Oct 03, 2011 1:29 am

It's not confirmed by any source I've seen. This is pure speculation, but I'd be surprised if we didn't see katanas, dai-katanas or even wakizashis, since the three are really just another sword type. I hear halberds might be part of this game, so certainly katanas (and swords of the like) would be, I'm sure.

Ninjas didn't use Katanas.

They actually did. In fact, it would have been their weapon of choice generally. Note, they didn't use straight katanas like hollywood claims they did. The reason they wouldn't have is that they would be more easily identifiable that way. However, the katana wasn't their only weapon, they also used the chain and sickle and bows. There was also other equipment they used, though, such as primitive explosives and such.

Nope, that's the hollywood invention. The closest thing to "ninjatos" that would have existed in japan was the chokuto style blade before the advent of clay technology for differential hardening of the blade.

Oh, and also OP, even if there isn't I am making a mod for some. So if you are on PC, you'll be getting some shortly after Skyrim is released. Thus far I have modeled and unwrapped a tanto, a wakizashi, a katana, a chokuto style blade, and a kogarasu zukuri style blade (kinda like a double edged katana but the second edge starts ~1/2 the way down the spine).

ninjatos were used by ninjas, but ninjas more commonly used kama and other weapons but, they did use them. Its written in the forms for blade training which is over 200 years ago so i think they did use them

eeeeeehh....Why?

Because it is in the Lore, it fits perfectly fine in the game. Even if there is only one Blade left, the weapons didn't just suddenly disappear from Tamriel.

It's possible since they've done it previously. Though it's true there haven't been any screen-shots/video of either types of weapon. Here's to hopin' though. :)

I'd like scimitars to make an appearance, but I guess we won't see much of the eastern stuff in Skyrim, unless it's from the dwemer/akaviri influence.

I'm not a fan of the overrated katana's, but I wouldn't mind seeing them, since they are established in TES lore.

Ha, same with battleaxes. They were usually one bladed, with very long handles and relatively short blades. Not like those huge doubleheaded things with a foot long handle. But then it is fantasy, so I don't mind them including weapons that would be absolutely useless in real life.

by the lore there are reasons cutless' and katana's can be in skyrim. skyrim was host to the akiviri invasion in the first era durring the first empire of men and they had katanas in morrowind so I am sure some of the refugees made it from red mountain with some. As for cutless' well the nords are knows to be great sailors and have a large merchant fleet so there should be some pirates or sailors from the port cities with some. but as alwayse this is just speculation on my part and its ultimately up to Bethesda (it is there game after all) and Bethesda alone.

let's not forget the modders :P

There shouldn't be any Katana in the game, the "sword" is useless, one of the worst swords ever made. Also we are on the North, no such useless blade in there, and if there is I will simply mod them out.

State your reasoning.

Judging from your avatar I shouldn't say much. The blade is folded to many times, it is thick and useless against mail. It was designed for a stricken use of slashing (You can't pierce); only that slashing (Technique) makes you fall back and leaves you vulnerable. There are also many other points. For once stop watching anime and actually learn about your precious Japan and how the Katana was actually made to threaten peasants.

Yes, but that only applies to the real world, not to TES.

Let's not go there.

How about I quote my previous post in this thread, because you obviously didn't read it!
I'm not a fan of stereotyped Japanese weaponry.

And no, I don't watch anime. I like the art-style, I have Japanese relatives, nothing more.

Funny, because Skyrim is based with rich lore of the North. It has Viking and Norse mythology as influence.

It also has much asian and assyrian influence.

There is a difference between Tamriel lore and Skyrim lore. Just because Skyrim is the land of Nords with heavy "viking" influences does not mean that the general Tamriel lore would be omitted. Not to mention the last remnants of the Blade faction is in skyrim. Akaviri artifacts most certainly would make there way into Skyrim.
