Will Skyrim play like oblivion with the new engine?

Post » Mon Nov 22, 2010 5:46 am

Now it has a new engine will it play like oblivion still? Will the environment still be interactive? Like being able to pick things up, chuck them about ? is it basically the same as oblivion but with updated graphics? It's just I don't want the game to change to much. I'm not to up to date with what new engines mean in games.

It is not Oblivion with updated graphics. They've updated everything to the point that it's a whole new engine. If you're familiar with Morrowind, then expect it to be different like the jump from Morrowind to Oblivion.
The new engine is something exclusive to Bethesda though, so it's not just a carbon copy of another engine.

It will be very different, but I think that's a very good thing.

Then I expect you're in for a world of disappointment, because Skyrim won't be "Oblivion 2.0" any more than Oblivion was "Morrowind 2.0."

Hmm well I hope they don't ruin it I suppose? I liked the whole formula of it. Open world, factions, the liked the whole atmosphere and game play of oblivion. Maybe I will skip this one.

I hope the movement won't feel as "weighed down" as it was in Oblivion. Not sure why, but movement in Morrowind felt smoother.

Todd said they rewrote pretty much everything. They even dubbed it the Creation Engine because there's a lot of new stuff going on. It will still feel similar to the previous games, as can be seen in the Frost Troll clip in the trailer, but there's plenty of upgrades.

They've rewritten the major features, yeah... but it's not as big as a step like from Morrowind to Oblivion. Todd said that himself in an interview. Improvement in technology is vital nowadays and good, yes :)

I agree, the huge leap from Morrowind to Oblivion was made possible by hardware advancement, whereas now the game must be playable on same hardware as Oblivion :sadvaultboy:

The Elder Scrolls has always been about creating the best open-world experience. This will never change, and this experience will only improve over time. There will of course be different factions and guilds to join. For example, the Mages Guild will be divided into two different factions known as The College of Whispers, and the Synod. Probably religiously or politically divided. From what we have seen so far, Skyrim will have a very unique atmosphere, I would say more unqiue than Oblivions which was more traditional fantasy adventure in both the aesthetics and presentation. Skyrim will feel more rugged and old, and therefore more alive and interesting to explore. I'm hoping we'll also get to experience some new Deadra realms.

I wouldn't skip it without trying it. Rent it from Gamefly or something when it's released, try it out, I don't think we'll be terribly disappointed with it if we enjoyed Morrowind or Oblivion.

You can still pick your race, but you won't be picking classes anymore. You play what you want to play as.

Yes to race
No classes anymore
Any character can learn any skill like before, but all contribute to levelling, increasing the skills you have highest will increase your level quicker

Races are in, no class system in the sense of what you're thinking of. You are what you play as.

Also, no birthsigns or attributes, but atttributes are just hidden really....

While waiting for Skyrim, you should buy Morrowind. And when you're finished with that, you should download Daggerfall and Arena.

I think you're missing the point. The "formula" will be the same as always. Open world, factions, etc. It'll just be a whole lot better. We already know about the massive graphic upgrade. They're fixing the broken level-scaling system, adding more diversity to locations, enhanced weather, radiant story, duel wielding, improved combat and stealth, etc. It's not like they are suddenly going to turn the game into a linear RPG like Mass Effect or Fable.

You can pick race, but not class. Which that I don't mean that you won't be able to play as a warrior, mage etc...you of course will be! but without a explicit label telling you "you are a mage".

The animations should be better. OB used Havok physics, Skyrim uses Havok Behaviour as well, but don't expect flowing hair and the like, as there has been no mention of Havok Cloth being used.

Its still based upon the same engine though its so heavily modified they dubed it the Creation, if you spent alot of time in Oblivion you should feel right at home in Skyrim. Granted there will be changes in leveling, classes and factions but at its core it will be the same as the game you fell in love with.
