Will it be THAT good?

Post » Wed Jun 23, 2010 1:53 pm

I think Skyrim will live up to what I'm expecting. In fact it's already exceeded some of my expectations, I didn't expect orcs to look so good and I didn't expect the ambient wild life. I can't comment on whether it will disappoint you or anyone else though.

I was on the forums for about a year leading up to Oblivion. I seem to remember a lot more information being released. There would be pictures, blogs, articles every couple of weeks and there was a lot of hype around here. With Skyrim, it seems like we barely get anything released and any new info is usually minor.

I expect Skyrim to be scary good.

I don't know why :o

You should play an Argonian in Skyrim. They're the most fun/best race ever. :frog:

Unlike some around here who are given to blatant really devoted fan-ism, I tend to keep my own levels of hype down and generally try to keep a more realistic view of things. I have liked a lot of what I have heard so far. And then there's stuff I have not liked or am less than impressed with. So will I be disappointed? Probably not. Will others? Undoubtedly. Though some of them will probably never admit it, or they'd look like fools.

I'm sure it will be accepted as amazing by most, but heed my advice when i say about 5 - 6 years from now, when IV is announced, there will be A LOT of people moaning about how Skyrim is inferior to Oblivion/Morrowind. It happend to Oblivion. It happend to Morrowind. it will happend with Skyrim.

So, do you think Bethesda will try to pull a fast one and re-release Oblivion as a new game in 2016? :)

My veiw of things goes like this. I love oblivion while also being very very aware of its flaws. I dont love it for for the bells and whistels I love it because at its core its a very good game. And I expect the same out of bethesda from skyrim and the dragons, animations and other candy will be icing on the cake

Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas were all good and they didn't disappoint. So it is also highly likely that Skyrim will continue the trend.

I would love to see an updated Telvanni tower.

Could you imagine Sadrith Mora reimagined for a modern system?

Well, Its not that they were bad! It's just that in some cases the sequels were worse!

Will it live up to most peoples' expectations? Most likely.

Will it live up to everyone's expectations? Hell no.

People are asking for all sorts of things, like Lycanthropy and Vampirism (with Vampire clans, quests, cures, and all that), no city walls, no loading screens, the myriad of integrated travel systems alongside horses, throwing weapons, crossbows, tons of jobs available, wanting to have a spouse six and their own children, the ability to write your own book, custom spell making to come back, guns, and tons of other things. I even saw a thread where even though pole-arms were confirmed, they were talking about how horrible developers Bethesda was and how they don't care about what the gaming community wants because spears themselves wouldn't be making an appearance in Skyrim. Those people were so sad, they made me almost lose faith in humanity; they were that horrible.

All I have to go on is MW, OB and FO3. And judging from those, SR will blow my socks off. I believe it has the potential to be BGS' crowning achievement. Will it be perfect? No. Itw ill have flaws but nothing game-breaking.

there is some reason to be speculative, skyrim will live up to its hype more than Oblivion, the main reason that Oblivion was disappointing and many thing were taken out is because bethesda did not have much experience with the new technology, they have had 4 more years sense them

When Oblivion was being developed, I wasn't on the forums. But I'm sure it was hyped up as much as Skyrim is now. Oblivion turned out to be not as good as Morrowind (IMO). Does anybody remember how hyped up Oblivion was? I'm not saying I don't have faith in Bethesda's abilities, it's just that marketing can make things sound sooo much better on paper. Since it has a very high expectation, I hope it can live up to it.

We'll see on 11-11-11 :P

I would disagree that Morrowind was better than Oblivion, but I would agree that they were different. On the whole, both were/are excellent games. They messed up in Oblivion's add-ons department ( horse armor ), but more than made up for it with Shivering Isles. I was a bit less than thrilled with Bloodmoon, but loved Tribunal. They're just different games.

Skyrim will be different from Morrowind and Oblivion. For some this will be a good thing, for others it will not. Judged strictly on its own merits, I suspect that Skyrim will rock. If Todd and crew had wanted Skyrim to be Oblivion with Dragons, they'd have done it as a DLC and saved the hassle of completely rebuilding the engine. But the proof is in the pudding, as they say, and we'll certainly see how they fared come 11-11.

Lol looking at that too, Morrowind had actual expansion packs.
Whereas Oblivion had more add-ons, like shelter, spell tomes, etc.

Oblivion lived up to mine, sure there were things absent from Morrowind that made me a bit sour at first but I grew to love OB and Skyrim will have the same effect. I think the dev's have learned what was really unpopular with OB and can incorporate the success of FO3 and make a really fantastic game. I think this ones going to be Bethesdas crowning achievement.

We'll just have to see. Certainly, as noted, some people are going to be disappointed. And as particularly well noted by Mitheledh, undoubtedly some of the most avid fans are going to be among the most disappointed, if for no other reason than because that's how it works - the further you build something up in your mind, the greater the chance that it's going to fail to live up to it.

I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised, myself. Beth is clearly following their longstanding tradition of eliminating RPG mechanics and replacing them with gimmicks. That was a successful strategy on the transition from Daggerfall to Morrowind (though it's notable that they already alienated some of their fans with that one). It was arguably less successful on the transition from Morrowind to Oblivion.

Actually.... I'm going to spiel on that Morrowind/Oblivion thing for a minute, because I think it's pertinent. I play Oblivion quite a bit more than I play Morrowind. I just find it to be more pleasant and more conducive to the sort of quirky roleplaying I like to do. Many of my Oblivion characters would've been far too much hassle to try to play in Morrowind. Yet I'd argue that by any sort of objective measure one might come up with, Morrowind is the better game. Compare it to movies - I'd rather sit down and watch Kung Pow than Citizen Kane any time, but I certainly wouldn't argue that it's a better movie. It's just, for me, more enjoyable.

See... .the problem though is that, to shift it back to the movie anology for a minute to make it a bit less troublesome for fans, if one continues along the path from Citizen Kane to Kung Pow, one ends up at something like Police Academy V - a movie so utterly dreadful that no amount of passing amusemant can redeem it. And that's the thing that makes me at least suspect that Skyrim is going to be disappointing to a LOT of people. There's only so long that Beth can keep cutting content and replacing it with fluff before the fluff just isn't going to manage to make up for the missing content any longer.

But, again, we'll just have to see......
