Will the Elder Scrolls XI be doomed to fail?

Post » Sat Nov 17, 2012 6:13 am

As my eyes scan through the numerous forums filled with Playstation 3 owners of Skyrim who seem to be on the verge of a full-scale riot, I realized the simple flaw seperating fans of the series who game on the PS3 from downloadable content and honest customer support: time, or a lack thereof on Bethesda's part to ensure their game is primed for release.

It seems like an obsession with the 11/11/11 release date required the bar be set low from the beginning stages of programming, as it seems numerous features that have been considered bare essentials in Elder Scrolls games were left out. Many of these basics were shown off in the Game Jam at DICE earlier this year. By leaving them out in the vanilla game, Bethesda has placed them into DLC to garner further profits. This, coupled with the pressure to release the next title in the series before the next generation of consoles are released, point to a rush to release a premature game essentially in the beta stages of its development.

To cut my own corners, I will get straight to the question. Do you believe Bethesda's fatal flaw is their rush to meet unrealistic deadlines?

(Forgive my typing error in the topic title. I meant "VI", as in the sixth installment in the series.)

Okay, I'll tell you right now we are not getting another Elder Scrolls game on the current gen of consoles (Thankfully). We still have another Fallout game to go before the next TES, and even that might not be out on this Gen.

And while I do believe that Zenimax put them up to the task of publishing the game on 11/11/11, I believe that the system requirements for the current consoles to be able to play the games also affected the content in the games. They have to make the game for the least powerful system pretty much, which would be the Xbox 360. Not only is the disk space very limited on the 360, but the system specs are not up to par with the PS3 or PC at all. Believe it or not, the Xbox version of Skyrim pushes the system's absolute limits to be able to play the game at least at a stable framerate.

Realistically, it can only get better from here on out. Pretty soon the graphics will be good enough and they will only have to focus on depth and gameplay, which I believe will be much better due to more disk space and more powerful systems next gen.

Whether Elder Scrolls 11 will fail or not is way too early to tell, it took 17 years to for the series to reach 5 with Skyrim so it's far into the future, we aren't even halfway there yet.

it seems numerous features that have been considered bare essentials in Elder Scrolls games were left out.
Such as?

The Game Jam happened after the game was finished, so they were never taken out from the vanilla game. And some of the Game Jam stuff been included in the free patches too (like the mounted combat).

No. I think their main flaw is that they don't make enough open quests that offer you choices. Most quests in Skyrim are very linear in nature, which feels rather outdated these days.

I was under the impression that The PS3 was the weakest of the consoles.

No, it's the most difficult to develop for, but it's much, much more powerful than the Xbox.
