Will the inventory have a paper doll?

Post » Tue Sep 27, 2011 11:26 am

So, in all the videos of Skyrim shown so far, we've gotten a pretty good look at the inventory. However, I noticed that there was no paper doll shown, even when browsing through equippable items. I'm not asking for a giant thing taking up half the screen like in Oblivion, but it will become somewhat annoying if we can't see what something looks like on our character from the inventory.

Has there been any news about the addition of a paper doll in the inventory?

Nope, Pete confirmed a while back the only way to look at your player is in game, no menus whatsoever

I don't really see it being an issue since we can view everything in 3D in the inventory menu.

The further TES gets away from the term "Paper Doll" The better, this is just one huge, decisive step. Now if only we could stop people from saying "Toon".

Go to third person view, rotate camera 180 degress then open the menu. Voila! There's your paper doll.

The menu screen now pauses on what is apparently shown at the moment, so in theory you could go into third person, position the camera around your character and then enter the menu which will then pause with your character showing.

Why does it matter what people call their characters?

So we have to jump through hoops if we want to be able to view what an item looks like on our character? What if we want to zoom in, or rotate the view?

Yes, you do.

Every item can be viewed in 3d up close. They can also be rotated in any direction. This close-up view is what replaced the 3d model of your character.

you consider exiting out the the inventory and making it go to third person going through hoops? plus you can see every item you equip and you can rotate and zoom in third person on all the past 3 games bethesda made

I had some reservations about this as well but it is possible while in 3rd person view 'o your character to open the "inventory" and see (in the background) the changes you make...

Sorry....no paper doll... No space!

If you haven't noticed Beth has a rather backwards approach to streamlining. It usually entails doing something that results in the exact opposite of what they claim to be doing. Rather then use the UI space wisely they cluttered it up with gigantic and pointless pictures of the items where the paper doll would go. The menu is so bad they created a redundant quick menu to get around it! Streamlined!

So, for the many times you will now have to take the streamlined approach of going in and out and in and out and in and out of the inventory to check out your duds... remember to take a few seconds to engage in the pointless activity of admiring the fine details of the picture that will be taking up half of the screen in the inventory...

The 3D view doesn't even show the full item. We saw the Elven armor and a Robe in the 3D view, it only showed the top part of it.

Hardly pointless, are they? For example the solution to the door puzzle in the demo is engraved on the golden dragon claw. Also, this is how we will read books now.

I'm actually glad the paper doll is gone. It always seemed stupid that every character carried a full-length mirror with them everywhere they went.

Paper doll was a proper term, since until Oblivion it was a 2D rendering which had 2D accessories you could see added. Oblivion actually had the right system in that you could see you character in 3D and rotate him/her, rather than the camera itself, thus making it no longer a paper doll. But, like many of their best features, Bethesda has scrapped it.

Although I do hate the word "toon," and part of the reason is that it originates from games (like WoW) where characters do look like cartoons. Unfortunately, that does apply to Oblivion, with their blobby models and over saturated colors and lighting.

Yep. Was kind of annoying in Fallout 3, when I had a bunch of different items to try to mix-n-match. Put on one thing, go out of menu, hold down view key & pan around, go back into menu, repeat.

Ah, well.

(Honestly, it would have been easy enough to have in Skyrim. Just have one button assigned to "toggle view" while in the menu - pressing it would switch the right side of the screen between looking at a 3D view of individual items and looking at a 3D view of the character.)

That would be the best system, it's sort of frustrating that in a game like Skyrim, Bethesda is choosing not to give us a paper doll.

The same reason it matters what you call people. Some terms are just totally improper.

So we have to jump through hoops if we want to be able to view what an item looks like on our character? What if we want to zoom in, or rotate the view?

Is there anyone who "Just" uses the inventory character display to view their character's alterations anyway? I'm betting even you exit out to view it in the light conditions of the actual game every time anyway. If anything, this is less hoops to jump through, especially because we can zoom in and rotate the view in 3rd person, which you couldn't do in Morrowind, and was laughably ineffective in Oblivion.

Nope, just get the PC version and wait for someone to mod the UI to look like Morrowind.

Uh... you could zoom and rotate in Morrowind, and it was easy to do in Oblivion too...
