Will the "major" modders be supporting F:NV?

Sense. Make some.

I think he means that some people don't like some food even though most people do. And when they don't like that food, and won't even give it a chance, then there's no way he will ever start liking it.

Same with Steam, they hate it without actually getting to know it.

I agree that the best overhauls will likely be a little while and not an exact copy of the FO3 mods. NV definitely has a different feel (notably in the rep systems and the adjusted VATS and Melee) which will affect many perks from previous mods. Also, with the new traits system, the skill book/magazine changes, and other factors, the base stats most overhauls like FWE use might not carry over in the same balanced but challenging way.

I for one am looking forward to when the truly thought out mods to arrive, especially for the added depth and challenge (and more guns!) but I understand that it will be a while. Besides, it gives me a chance to play through vanilla at my own pace and get the achievements (for the 2 weeks I'll actually care) before mods disable them (mods do disable achievements, right?)

Ok. You don't want to play. I'll explain it to you.

Say, for the sake of argument, you do not like fish. Then someone comes along and tells you "what's not to like about fish? It is nutritious, low in fat, high in protein... I eat fish every day".
Then you reply (again, for the sake of argument) that you do not like the smell or the texture.
"What? Don't be silly. Look at all the benefits you get from eating fish!!!".

Do you get it now?

I have no issues with Steam, other than the fact that I don't know when the game has been patched . . . or even what is being changed. Can sort of make modding a bit more difficult than the old way, where you just download the patch yourself.

As for early modding . . . I was not going to mod the game until I played it through, which is what I did for FO3. The problem was that I hated the game balance . . . or should I say unbalance. I cannot play a game where the Player is given a HUGE advantage over the NPCs from the very beginning of the game. And the AI was just plain gimped (again). So I NEEDED to fix somethings for myself, or I was just going to uninstall the thing. And I'm sharing my changes . . . so shoot me. I am NOT doing a port of my FO3 Tweaks . . . I'm going through this one item at a time and looking at all the default setting and then play testing my changes (which is why I'm still only about half way through my first module). My changes are not perfect, but they make the game much more playable for me (and I'll keep messing with them). And the story will play out just the same (only it will actually be somewhat challenging), so I don't feel like I'll be missing anything.

Apparently, they do not disable achievements. I thought they would too, so I was holding off modding things in yet until I got whatever achievements I felt like getting.

There's an achievement specifically for using 20 weapon mods, so obviously - nope mods don't disable achievements.

I think a better way to describe a Steam-Hater is that of a stubborn old man who refuses to adapt to an ever-changing society. When I see someone [censored] about Steam and how they prefer to go to a brick-and-mortar and pick up a cardboard box containing a plastic disc and a paper manual, I can't help but think to myself "Oh, grandpa! Will you ever change?"

... as for the mod part...

I haven't downloaded/installed other people's mods in a long time (except for the 3rd PV camera one for NV), nor released any of mine in a long time. I will mod this game, that is why I bought it, but this one is the last one. I don't want to be tied up to a "social network" or be controlled by bloatware while playing a game.

As for the "most popular and talented modders... there are many greatly talented modders whose mods aren't as popular/downloaded because they don't turn the game into an FPS or make "sixy" clothing for female meshes. I am not saying that is a bad thing, to each his own. But I prefer mods that bring something original to the table, that enhance the game in subtle ways rather than change it.

This.

Too many people rushing out to do straight ports, not bothering to learn how different NV is from FO3 (and it is VERY different from FO3, in terms of gameplay, the setting and the general "feel" of the game) and what it offers.

Yup, hit the nail on the head. It took a while for the really, really good mods to come out for Fallout 3, and Oblivion, Morrowind...see where I'm going with this?

I plan on modding quite a bit, at least porting my equipment mods over to NV as they all fit the setting, my desert camo stuff fits even better here actually (It's not released, but I have some desert camo raider armor etc.). I want to get my merchant mod up and running without it containing a crippling bug that causes instant crashes, for some reason it caused any intercom to crash the game, and I have no idea why :P But it was basically a vendor that sold all my modded stuff in Rivet City, I want to relocate him to a gas station that's been repurposed to a store, with some merc guards and fencing to keep it safe. I was planning on making the garage the actual store so there's no loading screen to shop and it looks cool, then make the gas station itself a house.

Before that however, I want to play the game a bit more, get a sense of what needs modding and what doesn't. And as importantly, finding out which gas station I can convert without any serious consequences.

Agreed, I recognize the talent required to make those sixy outfits but they don't really fit my playstyle. If I play a female character, then yeah, I want her looking good. There were some sixy yet somewhat practical armors out there for Fallout 3, it's a matter of balance.

I normally play male characters though, and right now he's a ghoul so sixy is thrown right out the window :P I want to see more mods that make some equipment that fits in the wasteland and the overall feel of the game. Subtle changes are so much better in my opinion than drastic ones, a great mod is a mod you don't even notice, it just feels like it belongs.

"Steam hater"? Ever changing society"? That's funny.
It is more than people use technology and don't understand what they are using is really old technology, it is just presented to them in the way of a TV infomercial and they eat it up.

People probably want to finish the game before adding more content.

Agreed that most will want to (or at least should want to) finish the vanilla game first.

...I can't imagine that will take too much longer for many thought. (I know not everyone is as insane as I have been, but I'm already getting ready to enter the strip on my third play through)

I can only speak for the "minor, unpopular" modder, i.e. me, but I'll definitely be modding FONV as soon as the GECK for Steam is released. I'll continue to mod for FO3 and Oblivion (and perhaps even Morrowind).

(That's a question: do I have to wait for the GECK to appear in my Steam Tools bar? Or can I just manually install the GECK to my Steam folder and mod right away?)

I just got the GECK off the main site and I'm already modding, even released a quick outfit. So go right ahead.

I just downloaded the NV GECK and extracted it into my "D:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\fallout new vegas" folder. It works Great . . . except for the fact that someone forgot to enable the error messages . . . which can be a pain. Oh, and there's no dictionary for the spell checker (but there's a fix for that in the GECK forum).

Good to see you back Jaysus. The only thing I want to know is where is the boat going to be this time?

As for stability this http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35262 actually allows you to use some of your RAM (up to 4GB now instead of only 2GB - again with this insanity?) has fixed most issues for many people. See TweakGuides main page for reasons not to use the D3D9 replacement mod(s) and to just disable the facial expressions until they are fixed. So with that silliness fixed/bypassed I think we are all free to ramp up our modding.

I want to being porting my standard size and HiRes total texture replacements as about 10K of the F3 textures were included with FNV - but apparently only some are actually used. When I either get the actual list of textures used in FNV from Obsidian (asked Sunday, but so far no reply), or give up and get a team together to do it ourselves, then FNV will get a complete facelift (all textures). After that is done then I can use my new modeling skills to start re-texturing instead of just texture upgrading. I heard NMC is not coming to play, which is a shame.

Cheers,
4Aces

For example, when modding overall damage. It might be better to mod overall hitpoints, rather that overall damage points because of damage threshold. Upping the damage without touching DT isn't a good approach.
