Will the mood be any..........darker, I wonder?

Post » Fri Apr 08, 2011 4:54 am

For the record, that's because alot of Oblivion's NPCs were perfectly complacent Imperial citizens. The Dark Elves of Cyrodiil weren't the Dunmer of Vvardenfell, and I for one was glad to see that not all Dunmer are innately dour and rude. Obviously, an Altmer isn't going to get much business to his store if he insults every non-Altmer that walks through the door, right?

Just because a character isn't from thier homeland, does that mean they should be sapped of all culture and uniqueness? Similar to the accent argument, they should act as though they're from thier native lands. Also, the games are only a fraction of the real depiction. An Altmer trader can still get business, especially in the Imperial City, if they refuse other non Altmer. It's huge.

But, you're on the right track. Racism in TES goes a long way towards making a more immersive experience. I like the idea of playing as an Argonian, and having to put the occasional band of drunken Dunmer in their place. Orcs, too, for that matter. Aren't they supposed to be the "Pariah Folk"? I understand that they've gone a long ways towards acceptance in the Empire, but you'd think there'd be a period of transition. It's like saying that racism in the United States suddenly *disappeared* after the civil rights movement.

Orcs haven't been accepted by the empire for long. They where only accepted somewhere between Daggerfall and Morrowind. In Daggerfall I constantly killed Orcs. They where one of the main bad guys I'd see. This is all during the reign of Uriel Spetim, so it's not that long ago. Just think, racism still exists in our culture, even though it has been bad (for lack of a better term) for years. And it's often accepted in Nirn.

So, yeah. I don't want racism to be such a heavy presence in the game that it becomes obnoxious, but I still want it to be present.

Of course. Most of the racism should take place in Inns if we're not in the province of a racist race. There should be the occasional shopkeeper that refuses certain races service, and the random racist guy.

What I want to see is better insults. I loved how Morrowind frequently had the likes of N'Wah and Fetcher. In Oblivion, an Imperial once called my Dunmer "Ash Born"

It be cool if some characters were nice to your face but if you overheard them talking to other people unaware you were spying on them would create a dark impression. little elements like that I feel would work pretty well

Pff, that's not enough. The relationship bonuses are weak, and there isn't any change other than an angrier greeting. We need massive hatred throughout the game. You would never have guessed that Orcs where actually only recenty accepted by the empire, and have been hunted by everyone for years when playing Morrowind/Oblivion, would you? You wouldn't guess that Altmer absolutly despised any other race and barred access by other races to thier towns. You wouldn't have guessed that the majority of Dunmer where all for slavery in Oblivion. There isn't enough racism throughout the whole series, imo. It gives a great depressing feel (think of the ghouls in Fallout 3) I want to be refused service by Altmer, mocked if I'm an armorer by Orcs, and beaten by Dunmer if I'm a Khajiit/Argonian.

It would be interesting to play a race like argonian and to see another argonian being mugged by dunmer. Help the argonian, the dunmer or just carry on your way. This would be great for roleplayers...

More like see another Argonian getting beat senseless for no reason by a Dunmer. I always play a Dark Elf, but those guys are dikes.

It would be an interesting quest if there were some orcs being kept outside a town because the people inside were racist, and you were able to convince them to let the orcs in. Then the next morning, the group of orcs had [censored] and killed a couple people, so the town got a lynch mob together. Or alternatively, the orcs were fine, and the townspeople killed them in their sleep anyway.

Exactly. How many current quests have this much depth when racism isn't involved? It's a very touchy subject, and can make you think about your decisions. you could even lead the Orcs into forcing thier way into a town. That could be the only option if you yourself, are an Orc.

And they can tailor the towns to affect some players and not others. They can make http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sundown_town. If it's in Skyrim, they aren't going to be keeping any Nords out, but depending on the place they might not let several other races stay there.

Brutal leadership would also contribute to a darker setting.

So many possibilities...

I would love to see some kind of brutal Dictatorship, where the poor are poor and the rich are rich. It goes hand in hand with corruption, which, imo, is the greatest form of darkening a game.

i hope its darker and more foreboding. one of the reasons oblivion is "cheery" is because of their awful color pallet. its like they picked the same colors that lucky charms uses in it marshmallows. the foliage was too bright of a green. the sky was almost always sunny. im using a weather mod that lets you adjust what types of weather and how much and it does make a differend when its overcast and rainy most of the time........which is perfect for me. if someone modded the foliage colors to be less crayola like then i think that might also help.

I don't know about you guys but I loved looking at a bright, vibrant, beautiful landscape stretching out for miles with golden rays breaking through the white clouds silhouetted against a bright blue sky. The colorful clothing of nobles in the Imperial City contrasting with the grey rags of the beggars and lower classes created an interesting contradiction that added to the realism of the game. However, darks elements could still be implemented into Elder Scrolls V. There were parts of Oblivion that were very dark such as the hidden torture chamber in one of the castles which was shown in the thieve's guild quest. Or what about all the darkness in Shivering isles? Suicide Hill, Cutter, and countless other characters disturbed the hell out of me. A new color pallet isn't the answer. Elder Scrolls V just needs to add of the dark elements found in Oblivion.

id agree with shivering isles. the reason i like SI better than the original game was cause of the choice of darker colors and original exotic creatures. crucible was perfectly forboding. also the dungeons were a bit better if a bit short. as for regular cyrodil.......all the sunshine and bright colors detracted from an environment where an empire was supposed to be in collapse and the world was under invasion from mehrunes dagon. not once doing the main quest was i ever anxious about what was happening.

If you like SI, you should play Morrowind. It was created with Morrowind in mind, as there where so many complaints about the unoriginality and cliché-ness of Oblivion.

And the bright colours in Oblivion did ruin the whole "impending doom" feel, I agree. Cyrodiil was supposed to be a dense jungle, which makes the bright standard trees and happy landscape even more annoying. Imagine what they could have done if they'd have stuck to the lore...

Anyways, enough of the Oblivion bashing, what I want to see is the need for a torch at night and in caves. Sure, I can easily mod it to my preferences, but it's a lot better when lights are placed according to lower light levels. I want the pitch black setting to be used more often. When the light levels are set to thier absolute minimum, amazing interiors can be created. That's my strategy when modding. Emphasis on placed lights makes everything feel darker and more atmospheric. It can also make a place seem happier and pleasent, with the right lights.

So it became original by copying what the previous game did? I guess that's why Morrowind ended with a giant robot.

Shades, are you a remnant of the Daggerfall-oriented forums days? Your opinion towards Morrowind is quite a nice change from the average opinion on here. Wasn't Vvardenfell just a volcanic wasteland in lore before Morrowind was released, therefore making Morrowind a lore-breaker?

It was indeed, but, imo, it was a good change. I don't expect Skyrim to be one big boring wasteland of snow. Change can be good, when it's not to the scale of removing an entire province's jungle. I mean, Morrowind at least had it's wasteland areas.

I also was suggesting a game to someone based on what he likes. Is that such a bad thing?

Every game breaks the previous game's lore. That's why I never really minded it.

I'm glad Morrowind wasn't a volcanic wasteland in Morrowind.

...and I'm glad Cyrodiil wasn't an endless jungle in Oblivion. An endless jungle is less variety than what is currently in Cyrodiil now, and navigating through a mess of tangled plants would have been a pain. There's a reason Talos got rid of the jungle.

OB Plot:
Spoiler
Oblivion-wise, we got the Daedric Siege Crawler. Si wise, Jyggalag would count.

Morrowind Plot:
Spoiler
The Big Stompy Robot was involved.

Daggerfall Plot:
Spoiler
People want the PC's Mantella to resurrect the Numidium, the other Big Stompy Robot.

Hell, let add in Fallout 3:
Spoiler
Liberty Prime

Way I see it, Bethesda Softworks have a boner for giant machinery/robot.

Well except they gave us an endless forest with little or no variety, which does not really make any sense in term of location. I say its more they want to focus on something else and cheap out on landscape. Not to mention ingame world is never 100% true to its lore as Vvardenfell was never surrounded by an endless sea of ocean, Cyrodiil isn't the size of Vvardenfell, or High Rock have graveyard with a size of a maze in the interior.

 thanks for that i never thought of it that way. i played morrowind for years before i had to uninstall it on my last computer cause of hard drive space. between oblivion and morrowind i had over 40GBs of crap. did SI copy morrowind .......you bet and was all the better for that.

For some reason I never got into morrowind and I think it was because it was a darker place that slightly did it so if mainland morrowind was made I want bethesda to not only look back at morrowind but to also look at si.

Following the Stompy Robot trend, is there something like that involved in Skyrim?

The only other setting I can think of is for TESV is the central imperial rule dissolving as the Nords (Slavs) make potshots at the crumbling empire and possibly turning into a MMO setting. Or a number of other things, but still.

[edit] like some ancient / revived magic of the falmer?
Or I guess invasion from Akivir is understandable given the circumstances.
