Will the old school magic come back inthe next TES

Post » Thu Jul 18, 2013 4:47 am

The stuff you had in morrowind.

a magic teleportation system
slow fall
levitate
lock doors
telekinesis to trip traps on doors
burden
feather
jump
swift swim
water walking
weakness
damage attribute
drain
night eye
sound
sanctuary
absorb
disintegrate
detect key
detect enchantment
detect animal
reflect
spell absorption
mark & recall

After seeing the stuff from Bethesda's own Dishonored and what some of the modders can to. I think the next TES can be beyond epic if they make better use of magic system.

HInt for lore friendlyness: Make the next TES society have properly institutionalised magical school that teaches kids magic at a very young age 5/6 years starting and ending in collage of magic and crafting and learning.

Levitation was removed so people cant get over city walls because over the walls the land would be unrendered.

Bethesda DID NOT make Dishonored.

When was that ever in TES?

Hopefully Bethesda will add more depth back into magic like previous TES games. They've seem to have done the very opposite in Skyrim.

its kinda good magic isnt as it was in past games.
Magic is hated by Nords because certain bad things caused by magic users so it makes sense that skyrim doesnt have as much magic thingys as past games.

I guess that's the way you see it. I just don't think the setting of the game should be an excuse to take away from the actual gameplay itself.

Suggestions for the next TES should likely be posted http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1465112-official-beyond-skyrim-tes-vi-24/

In Morrowind I could have a very viable character just by using Mysticism.

In Oblivion I could kill Scamps and Heal My character at the same time, but it was Restoration. I used Mods to bring back the Spell effects lost.

In Skyrim, they completely did away with many useful Spells and My Alterationist has to use a Lockpick.

Morrowind made a small profit

Oblivion made a bigger profit, and made "Horse Armor" a catchphrase.

Skyrim is still bringing in Money, I do not like the way the trends are pointing. Hopefully the next Title brings someting back, but I am very nervous it will not undo the current trend

Bingo.

That excuse pretty much went out the window with dragon riding. The cities actually do not look that bad from height. All they would have to do is add an "enter" zone, that enter the city when you hover past the "walls".

I so dearly miss spell making. I had so much fun making Chaotic AoE spells that did insane damage but drained my whole magicka pool.

I also really really want destruction spells that arent elemental. Whatever happened to absorb health and damage health spells? The vampire one is cool but FOUR HP per tick isnt getting the job done >.> Also, poison bolts!

actually in Oblivion I heard someone say that levitation was made illegal, just a Lore explination for this. I would like to see some older spells comeback though magic in skyrim svcks

BTW this thread will be blocked im sure

The next TES will likely have magic and other things similar to other previous TESs, but will not be anything like it was done before. TESs are so different to each other that they can never be accused of copy-paste. Each TES is so very different to play than any other TES, which is how we would all like it to be.

So, "old school magic" coming back, no.

If it's not, then I'm out.

I was willing to go along this time around, even though each and every one of the problems with magic in Skyrim were anticipated and predicted by me and several others once we learned there would be no spellmaking.

Even still with all my fears magic in Skyrim turned out to be bland, generic, boring and not useful.

No spellmaking is no TES6 for me.

End of.

I have to agree with Legion and Hevie on both accounts.

They really dropped the ball with the entire magic system for Skyrim. Aside from the visuals that is, but it overall fails horribly in comparison to previous installments.

I was so excited to see how they would have improved on the magic system and spellcrafting. It was almost unbearable and utter disgust when we were all slapped in the face with " We ( I ) removed it because we ( I ) thought it to be too "spreadshetty".

This ...

I really really miss the wide variety of spells and the chance to make ones that fit your character yourself. I hate using lockpicks with a mage unless it's a mage/thief hybrid. I'm afraid bradleyh's statement is more truth than I care to think about. There was some neat things added but for me, they do not come close to replacing what was gutted :(.

Seriously, what garbage is this? By your logic, if the Altmer scorn melee combat it would be logical if a Summerset Isle game skimped out on combat.

Not to mention the CoW does not answer to the Jarl and has no reason to skimp out on magic. Or the many mage enemies. Or Neloth.

The altmer have warriors though so melee will still be good in TES VI.

Its just my way of seeing the disappointing magic in Skyrim so I dont complain about it. I wasnt saying its fact. :)

While it makes sense for magic to be more absent in places like Skyrim, still doesn't really make sense for lots of spells to disappear. Unless you couldn't find a spell tome of the spell at all because, well, it's Skyrim, and the Nords don't like magic.

I hope that a game that takes place in an elven/beastfolk province will bring back the mystical awesomeness that was in Morrowind. And I don't just mean spells. I think a return to mushroom cities, strange creatures/cultures and alien terrains/architecture would be awesome. :)

I'm afraid it is gone forever. It is a simple truism that complexity equals lower sales. They can't very well make fewer sales next time: it *must* be more, or the series ends. Its the way business works, more's the pity.

Oh dear God ...it's already up to #24.

At this pace we'll be in four digits by the time something is announced

I don't know if I wouldn't get it at all, but I know I won't be paying full price for any of it. Skyrim's magic game play was pathetic. Terrible as thinking spell making was expendable is, what replaced it was unprofessional.

It probably won't. People don't like that much to see old stuff in new games; they prefer new stuff. What was good for Morowind was good for Morrowind; what was good for Oblivion was good for Oblivion; what is good for Skyrim is good for Skyrim; I don't want to see any of them in the next game, I want new stuff, new concepts. That's it.

I think at the end of the day it all comes down to simplicity, i only just grabbed morrowind having been a late comer to TES (started skyrim about a month ago) but the majority of games these days are following a common trend. The majority of the market wants simple games they can just jump into and play carefree whereas in the past we would have looked down on such simplistic games. Its a shame that so many games these days are trying to conform to the majority of the market, i know at the end of the day its a business but annoying the primary customers in favour of gathering a wider audience isnt a good idea. I hope we see a shift back to more complex games as the current generation develops honestly, not just for TES but for all games as great features like this should not be lost to make the game more user friendly for newcomers.

No they didn't. Dishonored was developed by Arkane Studios. It was only published by Bethesda.
