will the PC version look significantly better?

Post » Sat Apr 23, 2011 4:30 am

im very curious and at the same time a bit worried about this. deliberately nerfing the graphics on the PC version just to keep it on par with the console versions just seems stupid to me. i realize that the PC version will have some better textures and probably longer draw distances but im worried that they left stuff out of the PC version just so that console players wouldnt get their feeling hurt. DX 11 is in the game but supposedly they dont use much if any of it. not a huge deal for me but DX 10.1 had some nice lighting additions.

im hoping that im wrong and i hope that they took the path that the makers of two worlds 2 did and optimized every version to get the most out of every console and computer. PC version of two worlds 2 looks waaaaay better than the console version and thats how it should be.

Bethesda said that all three versions will look relatively the same. However, DX11 support hopefully means the modders can make it look a lot better.

Don't worry, it'll look better if you set the graphics up. I think their big thing was having the console games be on par with what most standard computers could support graphics-wise.

Again with the DX11...

I highly doubt DX11 will be used.

DX11 has been confirmed, but they won't be using a lot of it's big features. So stuff like tessellation probably won't be used.

The PC version will have higher resolution textures and anti-aliasing, though.

With that said, Todd has said repeatedly that they are working to keep each version looking just as good. So it will look better, but not as good as it could.

Todd Howard already confirmed the game will support DX11 but doesn't take advantage of any big features.

Oh, it's going to look better. I have no doubt about that. Just not worlds better. Worlds better wouldn't be keeping the three versions looking just as good as each other.

It seems making all games look the same is the new fad. Crytec did it with Crysis 2 and it seems Skyrim will be the same (to a point, seeing as how PC will have better shadow quality and AA and AAA and all the other default PC goodies). Luckily though, TES has a vast modding community, so we will be squeezing the most out of our hardware that we can. That's what we modders are here for. The devs have to make a game from scratch and spend equal time on all parts of the game. However, we modders can spend months on a specific part of the game and be able to polish it where the devs didn't have the time. It's not that the devs can't do it, they just have limited time and can't spend ample time on one specific part of the game like modders can, which is why Bethesda is incredible because they give us the tools to take the game the farthest possible now or in the future.

Yes PC will look better, it always does. Even when the consoles launch, buffed PC will look better. Its b/c theyre all PCs, but the $4000 ones look better.

EDIT: Today graphics are so good anyways, its like fighting over a square inch of area.

DX11 support, if modders can use it fully, means that an entire legion of graphics enhancement plugins will come, from a "simple" SSAO shader to (hopefully) tessellated models. And naturally, with a nice rig it WILL put consoles to shame graphics-wise.

I don't know the legal details, but I do know human and corporate nature. I would presume that it's not a fad, but a requirement in their licensing agreements with Sony and Microsoft.

In one interview, it WAS said that DirectX 11 is supported, however, it doesn't sound like they'll make extensive use of its benefits, as it's said that their focus is on making all versions look the same.

Although depending on how much freedom the Creation Kit gives modders, I could see DirectX 11 support being helpful for graphics mods, but in the unmodded game, I think we can safely assume that we won't see anything done with it that consoles can't do.

So there you have it, the PC version will probably look a little better than the console versions, maybe, but not by any significant amount, by which I mean, we're not going to be seeing tessellation or anything like that (tessellation given as an example because it seems like that's the latest obssession in graphics, at least on these forums. No discussion of graphics can be had without it being mentioned if it's at all applicable.) Of course, once you bring mods into the equation, the PC version will surely be able to look much better than the console versions ever can, but that doesn't really count as not everyone who gets the PC version automatically benefits from that. Only those who choose to download mods do.

I can only hope modders create some extensive graphics packs asap. I wonder what Skyrim would've looked like if it was a pc exclusive game :(...

At this point though you're using a lot more power for so little change in graphical quality.

I dont think were too far off from makeing pixels as small as atoms, and finally then you wont be able to tell the difference between real life and your monitor. maybe only 50 years

Hell, in 50 years, we probably won't even be using computers. We'll probably just have some plug that you can stick in the back of your neck and sends you into a virtual reality world. TES XIV should be released by then.

Things you can expect on PC that you can't expect from console:

-Twice as high texture resolution
-Anti-aliasing.

Hopefully we will also be able to jack up particle count and view distance as well.

Is that a wish? With all due respect, that's irritatingly selfish.

Just wait for someone to make some HD textures and other graphics mods. The game will be blowing your mind and melting your GPU. :flamethrower:

Of course it'll look significantly better. 720p at 30fps isn't exactly difficult to beat - as well as better AA, and 'higher res' (Though no idea how much higher) textures. Even without them, it'd look significantly better, I don't think that's ever been a serious concern. You'd have to lock a game to low resolutions and cap the framerate at 30fps to make it not, even on a low end PC.

I own a ps3 and an xbox myself, but consoles won't ever get close to how pc gaming feels like. Using a mouse is just so much more sensitive than using a thumbstick. That's basically the reason why i prefer computers over consoles. I just want to play the perfect game, but because gaming companies have to make sure their game can run on consoles it's impossible to take giant leaps forward in the graphics department.

Console gamers are always complaining that pc gamers shouldn't be so selfish because they find it insane to spend over 3000€/$ on a computer, but you don't have to. You can play any game on a pc with the same graphics as you would on a console for an 800€/$ pc. That's more than a console, but you use computers for so much more than gaming. Everyone has a computer these days, you use them for everything, but you rarely use consoles for anything other than gaming (or watching a dvd once in a while).

I still like gaming on my consoles, but i would prefer if they kept games exclusive to one system.
