I know that sounds strange but I am curious.

When NWO came out I played a mage because I wanted to played ranged dps.

Strangely there was no ranged dps in that game. Everyone has to clump together on the cleric and the mage just CCs, not much dps.

So with ESO, is there any true ranged dps that doesnt have to get slammed with damage during combat?

Equip a bow or destruction staff. Some of the class skills also have range too. It is just a matter of building to your play style

You might want to try a Nightblade with a bow then.

Nightblades get the ability to turn invisible even during combat.

So just nuke with the bow until they're close, turn invisible, relocate and spam bow again.

NW (there is no Online in it's name, so no need for that "O") now has the Hunter Ranger which is what your looking for there. If everything pans out with ESO, the Battle Mage will be the faceroll class, and you'll be able to use a bow with him.
