I'd really like to see Arcanum's sequel as an open-world 3d sandbox type RPG game. It shouldn't be done by Bethesda though. They would ruin it.

No we wont see guns. Why? Well look at it like this, the Dwarves were the technologists of the realm and favoured logic over faith. They went as far as making crossbows and then things went slightly iffy as they all vanished. No-one knows why or where or what happened, but with no-one around to do the inventing we wont see any technological advancement. Especially when even the smartest people still dont understand wtf the dwarves made or how it works or wtf to do with it.

You're calling up Bioware or sumthin'?

The lore reason they never made guns was because magic made guns obsolete. I believe they use that explanation as to why technology has remained stagnant (why invent new stuff when magic can do what you need cheaply & efficiently?)

There are lots of games with guns on the market, don't wreck our fantasy sword and magic game.

As others have said, go play fallout 3 and or New Vegas and leave TES alone.

The Elder Scrolls universe is in its 70th century, at least. Your technology is totally out of date.

Isn't there like some Dwemer artifact that is a gun that has been mentioned in the lore but not seen in actual game play?

Also: Magic and steam powered robots are okay; but firearms are a big no no...? lol

This is easily explained. Bows and crossbows are of limited capability to penetrate armour. The very powerful pieces are very difficult to use, only with extended training like war bows (or "longbows") or arkwardly slow like very expensive crossbows. The introduction of firearms would change the art of war in Tamriel considerably. You would see not much armour and relatively few cold steel weapons on the longer run, instead bigger armies with firearms. Magic is not the same as firearms, because not everybody can use it, it needs long training and it is not so effective because of resistencies. Thtat's in the logic of the not-logical Tamriel world.

This is not a universe where these things happen. It is not an alternate world from earth, it is a separate being entirely.

Things like gunpowder don't even seem to exist in skyrim, so how could they use guns? Between the last half of a century before skyrim, not only have they not innovated weapons... but they forgot how to use spears, throwing weapons, and can't grasp the concept of creating a crosshow. This is not earth, this is not fable, it is the elder scrolls... a land of magic, they have no use for petty firearms.

I would love to a TES game in like another era with the size and scope of Skyrim. I think 19th century would be pretty interesting since there was were still many medieval aspects to it in certain parts of the world in Europe like England/Switzerland.

The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard was actually getting close to the look you were describing. Redguard had characters wearing clothes that looked very 18th and 19th century (fairly form-fitting pants, long boots, suspenders, "pirate coats," waistcoats/vests). Some of the weapons even looked like they could be from around that time; scimitars, sabers, and there were even rapier swords, which I would like to see in a proper Elder Scrolls game, yet they were neglected.

Don't ever dare to voice an unpopular opinion on these forums, you'll only get a handful of rational people who disagree with you and explain why. Then a flood of people screaming bloody murder like you are killing their family in front of them, or condescending replies overflowing with pretension.
I feel that with all the Dwemer steam technology, crossbows and iron or steel around guns could easily be invented, but a simple answer is they just don't really fit into this series. I wouldn't want them in TES because they just don't seem right, it would make everything else seem weird (like armor and bows).

IRL the chinese used bombs in the 10th century cannons in the 11th, and handheld versions in the 12th. The arabs and eastern europe copied the design in the early 13th century, the western europeans in the late 14th. So 18th century firearms would be a bit too modern for a medieval fantasy world.

As for a Victorian-age fantasy world: Tamriel is in a phase of technological stagnation since at least 4000 years. The only people that designed new technology since the disappearance of the Dwemer are the Redguard and they made, yes, cannons. They used them to good efficiency in the War of Betony, and it makes sense for a magic-scorning warlike seafaring nation to use them. But we're talking about weapons to sink ships without destroying the cargo and siege weapons used to break down walls. A cannon is easier to transport / faster to use than a catapult or trebuchet, but a handheld version has no advantages over a spell or an enchanted crossbow.

Arcanum showed us that there is only a small market for steampunk RPGs. Today's games are multi-million projects; the developers take no chances and use an established setting that is known to have a big fanbase, for RPGs those are: Medieval Fantasy, Near-Future Apocalypse, Space Opera.

So no, not a chance to see magic, elves and guns in an AAA game (at least until someone makes a very popular movie series in such a setting.)

To contribute more than linking to a video of Chang screaming no (which is awesome) whilst I don't support the idea of technological advancement in TES, it would ruin the magic IMO, if they ever did High Rock in a future game I'd like to see it take some Victorian era influence as well as the expected medieval style.

Magic and guns has already been done, and the games tanked. Wizardy series was fantasy/sci-fi hybrid games where races were "aliens" and the action was on a backwards planets. The game was FPS style, and it was an absolutely frakin turd of a game. Infact it was SOOOOOO bad, that even though I tried my best to play it I was still lost and didnt know wtf to do after 5 different characters and at least 50 hours of play and the controls and gameplay were atrocious. And you can blame it for me hating Morrowind, because I bought Morrowind right after I stopped playing Wizardy 8. And my first thought after 20 mins in Morrowind was "not again" at which point I gave it away 2 days later.

We already had crossbows in Morrowind. Bethesda removed them along with throwing weapons and my personal favourite... Spears.

That said, It's a massive no vote for me on guns in TES, we have fallout for that.

Guns will never be in this game. Do you want every game with swords to have guns?

Also the race that came close to creating guns in TES. The Dwemer? They wiped themselves out through their arrogance. TES has gods and magic. Guns are completely unnecessary.

Personally I would hate that.

I think it would be really cool to see an open world 18th or 19th century rpg, but I wouldn't wanna see TES turn steampunk.
