Will there be an incentive to expand your settlement?

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 9:22 pm

In Fallout Shelter, there will be no incentive for players to expand his/her vault after some time, as you will soon be able to deal with anything the game throws at you (namely radroach infestation) with what you have. Unless you find joy in just collecting more powerful items, you have no reason to continue playing.

That makes me wonder, will there be a reason for players to expand their settlement and keep the population happy? I understand that there are people who find joy in creating elaborate buildings and seeing their community thrive, but will there be incentives for more, idk, materialistic people?

I think if people in your settlement pay you some kind of taxes in the form of bottle caps or (sometimes rare) scavenged resources for crafting, that gives you a pretty good reason to expand your settlement. This may sound selfish, but if satisfied population provide more caps or better items, you will have an incentive to spend (at least part of) the tax to raise their happiness.

I hope similar systems will be actually implemented in community building of Fallout 4.

Edit: To be clear, I am not skeptical of the building sysytem. Along with new crafting system, settlement building is one of the features I am most looking forward to. I am just saying the more reward for players, the more appealing the new feature would be for them.

Well we know npc that can provide direct benefits can come to your settlments like traders and I assume as your settlment thrives thry can offer more high end stuff for a better price.

Todd said that we will attract merchants with some of the best gear. No information beyond that.

I remember hearing about Merchants stopping by with rare items, but Howard didn't say how long they would stick around and how we would be notified if rare items are within our settlement.

Honestly, If there's no incentive other than the "Chance" of rare items stopping by I have no reason to waste time building one unless I'm extremely bored, but hopefully they will implement taxes in caps, Items, weapons, etc. Something that'll make spending time building worth our time.

I suspect a larger settlement would mean more cashflow for you, more NPC stores with better quality stock, larger caravans coming more often, etc. Likely would also result in more radiant quests being available, too. And tougher enemies seeking to take your stuff.

well settlements also produce water and food and high levels of charisma unlock more features like trading posts which can bring in trade. im sure it will be helpful to have a settlement that could produce stimpacks or something.

It sounded to me like your settlement will attract vendors and they have a booth at the settlement. It also indicated a level 3 perk to get the vendor. He then said you would need to have food and water for the settlers, so you need to plant food and set up wells for them. I am not sure how big I am willing to build, but I am excited to try this.

This is wishful thinking, but I think that it'd be really rad if the player's settlements develop into a small personal faction of sorts. Depending on your choices, it'd become a prosperous collection of production or trade towns or, if you so choose, a large raider gang/tribe.

I can see it now. My Sole Survivor being the "governor" of the settlements of Farm Town, Gun Depot, Junk Yard, and Stimville. He gets a steady flow of caps and supplies and the towns become a growing and significant force in the Boston area- a sign of hope, Justice, and stability. On the other end of the spectrum, my evil Sole Survivor being the big Don or gang boss of Raiders that rob caravans, terrorize settlements, extort tribute for "protection," etc and gets incredibly rich off of her ill-gotten gains.

In either case, it'd warrant the other more established factions to take note of you and eventually either establish trade/alliances or fight/undermine you.

They said something about traders having better items if they are in your own settlement or something like that. You will probably also get a discount on items as well. We can only assume that threats will keep coming up and you will need to build defenses up over time. It might start off as a small group of bandits at lower levels and maybe a couple of deathclaws at a higher levels. So it's better safe that sorry. I can imagine a scenario where you are 200+ hours into the game and realize that your settlement isn't strong enough to withstand waves of attacks at higher levels and at that point it might be too late. You might have to reload back 50 hours and start gradually building up your settlement while redoing a huge chunk of the game.

At one point in the trailer I saw what looked like a machine used to contact a satilite. So the deathray you had in New Vegas will likely make a come back and probably only be available to those who have built their own settlements. There could be other machines that you can only build after you have a thriving settlement.

I can't wait to set up settlements! It would be cool if you could make settlers into raiders or "scavengers" and send them out to collect resources.

I also thought of it being a faction on its own;it won't but it would be awesome. Your settlement grows, you become powerful and suddenly you are at war.

Not if it is tedious and without reward.

I would like it if we had a lot of generic NPCs and special NPCs. Generic ones would be normal workers and guards and special ones specialistss with their own backstory and such.

Does anyone have any information on how settlements will build? What I mean by this is scattered throughout the wasteland, the players are given a large piece of square for example to build their own house on. Will other houses build on the nearby empty lands, or do NPC's all gather around with their brahmin, tents, etc? Can we possibly take charge of the other buildings and will they be in a variety like saloons, shops, etc? If we can customize them, that's another incentive. More 8-bit styled colored light panels for each building :)

If nothing else a larger settlement will attract more traders and caravan which means access to more stuff.

Plenty of time, I wished Megaton was bigger so that Moira Brown would get in some more bullets.

Maybe I'm only a year or so before I start yelling at kids to get off of my lawn, but to me this thread reads like, "Is there a reward for eating this completely optional bonus ice cream? It better have a brownie underneath, or I'm not even going to try it"

The reward is doing it.

We know there are mechanics attached to building as well. Bethesda did people that wanted settlements a huge solid, by including it in the base game and then saying, "Oh, and btw... Mods for everyone!"

I know, I sound old

I am not saying I am skeptical of new settlement feature. For me, it is actually one of the most anticipated new features in Fallout 4. I am really eager to try.

I am just saying that with more brownies, that bonus ice cream would be more enticing for me (or other players as well). I think that by giving players more incentives to utilize certain feature (while still being optional), the feature is more smoothly integrated to the game.

Perhaps larger settlements will attract stronger or better armed folks you can bring along as companions?

Bigger settlements mean more raiders attack and more raiders attacking means more stuff to sell once they are wiped out and more stuff to sell means money!
