I really dont understand how Darts and Crossbows are a bad thing though.
Its not like it takes away from anything, all it does is add variety.

Throwing Knives themselves could be utilized as both Daggers and throwing weapons
Spears would be about as easy to implement as staffs.

I just dont see the issue.

I know this is off topic. But are they changing the awful enchanted look?I don't know about you guys but I think the enchanted items look horrible. It's like your character spends a week shoe shining anything that gets enchanted.I'm personally hoping they add more aesthetic customization to armor and weapons and enchantments.Spell especially.I.I got very bored with magic in Oblivion because my high level fire nukes looked the same as the starting fire ball.

Well i prefered the Magical Look of Morrowind, as it was more subtle, but strong enough for you to know it's there.

I dont know if they're changing it.

Also Theninore, i have heard about Havok Engine as well for Skyrim, and i've heard it may be confirmed, but im not sure for myself.

Either way, they're using a VERY advanced engine, which is why i want to know why they couldnt utilize it themselves as Project Offset was going to

First off, gpster has it completely right.

Secondly, more variations to armor and weapons would be nice. Morrowind did this pretty much perfectly.

The problem with spears is the animation, not it being OP.

A stabbing weapon wouldn't be a problem if you narrowed it's hit box. It's a precision weapon, why not treat it that way. If you had to aim with your spear, it's reach wouldn't be questioned.

There are tons of ways to balance spears. The problem is spear combat is very hard to get right, I've never played a game that got it right. BGS is all about getting the feel and animation right, spears were sunk from the start.

What I want is more variety of weapons, as in classes of weapons. If I have to give up having a thousand different swords for more unique types of weapons, with unique fighting styles, I'm all for it.
From what I've seen of the skill system we may be getting pretty close to this. I'm hoping for something along the lines of masterclass weapons as well.
For much of the time I played Oblivion I was also reading the Wheel of Time series, and I wanted nothing more than to play as a Blademaster. The hallmark of which is the sword, a mid-length sword wielded in both hands duelist-style. Making a for a speed/agility precision based two handed sword style with good defensive capabilities. My problem with Oblivion was that while there was some vairation in weapons, a two handed sword and axe were basically the same weapon, it was more of an aesthetic choice.
I would love for there to be spears, staffs, and pole-arms, they're a terrific weapon for the world with unique fighting style that I feel would add some depth to the characters.
I would also like to see dual-wielding weapons along with the unique fighting style, fist weapons would add some extra depth to unarmed, another step there would be for different fighting styles - kung fu, brawling etc...
Crossbows or even guns might be an interesting addition as well, I understand that Skyrim is a more primitive, brutal land... but a lot of time has passed since oblivion and I like to think a little technological advancement could happen. With the alchemy skill, I don't think gunpowder is out of the question, possibly even primitive bombs.
I know I asking for a lot of variety here, I just think that with the new skill system a lot of possibilities have opened up, which could mean an incredible depth of combat beyond even what we've seen so far.

I.... don't know.

The lack of variety in weapons and armor was and is an oft-repeated criticism of Oblivion, and one can only hope that it didn't fall on deaf ears. My view on it (which I've expressed here before, so proactive apologies to those who have waded through it before) is that they not only need to add more straightforward variety - simply more choices - but they need to make the differences between the materials and the items more subtle. Beyond the simple lack of choices in Oblivion, the thing I dislike is that each material is exactly this much stronger, this much heavier and this much more durable than the previous one. It's just too rigid a progression. I want to see more things like there were in Morrowind, where, for instance, glass did nice damage and was actually quite a bit lighter than similar materials, but the trade-off was that it was quite a bit less durable and couldn't hold anything close to as powerful an enchantment. That made the choice of materials more complex and thus, to me at least, more satisfying. Instead of just moving up a ladder, I had to weigh costs and benefits and decide what was best for a particular character.

We can only hope.....

I know you've been quoted many times, but it's for a good reason. Right on point.

you can add me in with this group. it blew my mind how few weapons and armor there was in OB, the expansions helped a bit (and mods fix that, but bgs should not just use modding as an excuse to produce sub par variety) and it still confuses me why todd and others do the equivilant of a shoulder shrugg when people ask them to put more variety into the equipment.

Todd has said that it feels like there is more armor then their was in Oblivion.

he also said that the map would feel bigger too. its a bit unfair to bring that up but I had to. I am guessing that since pauldrons are in (i think they are in, I have seen other people talking about it and they seem to have seen some info that all but confirms it) there will be more armor combinations and looks but probably nothing like MW.

I can't stand games that have a "best". The worst feeling is when somebody asks "So what's the best weapon?" or "What's the best armor?" and there is a specific answer. I want to be able to choose between different weapons and armor based on durability, weight, armor value, weapon speed, etc. There should be no specific endpoint of armor or weapons.
