Will there be level scaling?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 7:35 am

I loved oblivion as a whole but one of the most immersion breaking things about that game was the mechanic of level scaling.
When i gain a level in a RPG i want it to feel as if i grow stronger and that feeling is taken away with this mechanic.
Besides that it makes no sense that the bandits in the caverns automatically gain glass armor because the player went around exploring.
So will it be implemented into TES V or will the world be static?

Considering level scaling exists in Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind and Oblivion, not to mention most CRPGs out there like Mass Effect and so on, I think it's safe to say that there will be level scaling of some extent.

Okay but i'm wondering if it will be as extreme as oblivions case where you could finish the game at level 1 should you wish it or more like morrowinds where you at least had to level somewhat in order to finish the game (for example bloodmoon was pretty hard if you went there before level 20)?

I agree that Oblivion's extensive level scaling did a pretty good job of shattering my immersion. One of the things I like about the earlier Elder Scrolls games is the fact that you could unexpectedly walk into an area you're just not supposed to go yet and get your ass whooped without mercy. Oblivion (the metaphysical realm, not the game) felt mind-bogglingly tame when I waltzed in at level 1 and saved the day with nothing but my trusty iron sword and a single Destruction spell.

I'm almost certain there will be level scaling. But if you'll notice Bethesda has taken the complaints into consideration with FO3 and NV. I would expect something closer to that, but hopefully even more fine tuned. Ideally, I don't want any level scaling at all, but I think that's asking too much.

Level scaling is a b**tch, but hopefully it won′t be as hardcoe as in Oblivion. Loot and bandit/monster-scaling is just so wrong :shakehead:

Well hopefully they can minimise the level scaling as much as possible, with zero loot scaling.
Perhaps they could make the roads and more populated areas contain less powerful enemies, and things could get more dangerous the further you stray from the road. It could just give off a bit of an element of fear when you're roaming around randomly through the woods.

Hopefully very little and wisely implemented so it doesn't sour the character progression and challenge.

Thanks, this should put my mind at ease :celebration: (i didn't really mind it in fallout)

Cool idea, but I don't know how well that would work. That would mean that early quests would all have to be written to stay on roads/in cities, and that would become very dull very fast. I think it would work better if it were dungeons that had predefined enemy levels, and the wilderness was all fairly low leveled, aside from a few higher leveled enemies around the higher leveled dungeons to give you an idea of what to expect.

But even that sounds ridiculous. Maybe no level scaling whatsoever wouldn't work.

I like the level/loot/monster scaling similar to MW.

I'd really wish there was no level scaling at all.

One of the very few things that was very bad about my favourite ever game, Oblivion :(

Level scaling has been working fine in Fallout 3 and New Vegas. As long as they don't overdo it again, all is good! :P

Loot scaling is probably the most common scaling in all RPGs, there are lots and lots of chests everywhere with random loot depending on the level.

Those chests should be scaled to the danger level of the area, so we have newbie areas with newbie loots, and a minimal chance of finding high level loot there.

And there should be high level areas with a chance of finding newbie to high level loots in those areas with the emphasis on lower level loots, and some boss containers with high level loot stash in them.

High level loots should be scarce but more probable on higher level areas, but some boss containers like the personal stash of a boss monster, should have a 100% chance of finding good loots.

Edit: typos.

Personally I don't mindloot scaling. But I don't want enemies and the loot they carry to grow in level/value just because my level grows. If I can kill a bandit at level 5, by level 15 I should be able to slaughter him three times as fast, and he should be carrying the same loot as he always did. Certain enemies(daedra for example) should be nearly impossible to kill early on, but get easier as you raise your skills/levels. And the same for easy enemies(like bandits) they should only become easier as you grow in level.

However, I'm not too worried about this for Skyrim, I'm sure they've read the complaints from Oblivion and revised it. If not I am going to be disappointed until a mod comes out to fix the problem.

Some scaling is fine with me, but make it like in Morrowind and I′m happy with it. Oblivions scaling-system was really one of the biggest flaws of the game and I hope they won′t make the same mistake again. I guess they know that, since so many complained about that. Being able to beat the entire game with a level 1 or 2 character is just WRONG.

I hope level scaling doesn't go beyond weapon damage and enemy toughness.

I want to pick up a daedric claymore, fight a Minotaur and get a full suit of ebony at level 1! It however doesn't have to be good and could improve as you level

yes, most common solution is to make the game linear, so you don't get access to the high level areas until later. Even then it's often scaled.

One interesting thing in Fallout 3 was that weapon and armor condition was scaled, in the beginning raider equipment was less than 10% condition, at higher levels they was closer to 50%. Pretty hard to notice but would have significant impact on difficulty. In oblivion something with 50% condition would work 5 times better than 10%.

I hope the scaling will be close to MW. Thats how i was first introduced to TES, so OB was a disappointment. I liked being able to walk into a Daedric ruin at level 5 at get my as* handed to me.

Not good at all this terminology, so here's that : more like Morrowind, less like Oblivion. I want to die if I'm stupid enough to wander in the wrong place, damnit. Cyrodiil... I remember going oh crap when I got myself at the siege of Kvatch unleveled. Was sooooo disappointed I made it in one piece.

If there is level scaling (and I think there will be), hopefully it won't be like in Oblivion/Fallout 3 but rather like in Morrowind/FNV.
