Will there be swords, knifes, daggers,etc...

Knives kill people. 2 x 4s do not. You do realize this, yes?

Also, running up to armed soldiers when you've run out of gun ammo is a fool's errand. But hiding somewhere and letting him come to you while having the opportunity to at least defend yourself with a sharp weapon is far better than nothing.

common misconception, blunt weapons have a higher chance of killing someone if used on the head, whereas a sharp object would have to hit the heart, otherwise there's a big chance the person can be saved

what is a 2x4 anyway?

Ever heard of "Don't bring a knife to a gun fight?" Yeah.

And you have the opportunity to defend yourself with either melee (knife if holding a sidearm) or a gun, so having a melee weapon that takes up a slot of its own and has to be equipped is unuseful and redundant.

Edit: Nikto posted right before me. This statement is referring to Vaporman. And I meant (spelling it out) a two by four, a piece of lumber roughly the same size as a baseball bat.

Or you simply stab them in the face. Penetrate the brain and you win.

I found knives plenty useful in BFBC.

Also yes you never bring a knife to a gunfight. You stab the guy when he isn't looking or expecting it.

I think he meant "get up" as in stand back up after being given a revive syringe by a medic.

No, wraith is correct. When someone slide tackles you, melees you, or even if you're too close to a grenade, you get knocked over. Enemies then are able to do another melee to finish off your health, so you want to get up as fast as possible. But, before you get up, you are able to chase the enemy off by shooting.

you'd think that wouldn't you? still, there's people who survived having a sharp object stuck in their brain...
admittedly, they're never as smart as they used to be, but smart enough to still blow your brains out :violin:

so, a piece of lumber? i'm not quite strong, but i think i could kill someone with a piece of lumber. pretty sure i could KO a fullgrown man in one hit aswell.(if the lumber doesn't break that is)

I think it would be quite fun to be a heavy and go around with a 4x4 Walking Tall style.

+1 for lumber

There was a Greek man who was fishing with a harpoon gun for some reason, he slipped and shot the harpoon up through his jaw and it came out the top of his head. He survived and only has some small memory problems. Then there's the recent example of a man who was gored by a bull in the mouth and came away knowing that stabbing a ******* bull is a stupid ass idea.

I think the most unusual stories such as this are when people get stabbed, usually in a mugging, and don't even realize it.

Such as this one, where a woman was stabbed in the neck and walked all the way home before noticing. Its not quite a knife to the head, but I'm still looking for that story (I remember reading one a while back)
http://www.daveandthomas.net/2010/02/05/whaaaa-woman-mugged-stabbed-walks-home-with-knife-in-neck/
(warning: slightly graphic picture)

Edit: Found a story where a man got stabbed in the head, and survived for 3 years before getting it removed because the headaches started to get annoying. No loss of brain function at any time.

And possibly slightly more relevant to FPS players, a man got stabbed in a cyber cafe with a foot long knife, and lived. The reason he was stabbed is that the two men were playing counter strike, and the assailant believed that the victim was wall hacking. I'm not a fan of hackers, but that seems a bit extreme. Why does one bring a foot long knife to a cyber cafe anyway?

The human body certainly can take a ton of punishment. Look up the Russian Spetsnaz sometime...they were trained to kill and kill and kill. The Soviets threw their most elite soldiers into Spetsnaz training which was a brutal process in itself. It was lethal even, with trainees dying due to training regularly. The Spetsnaz were then deployed into attachments to the regular army, but had no special identification or markings to indicate they were Spetsnaz, so if the event of war did come, American troops would never know if they were fighting an average Russian used no more then fodder, or a team of the some of the most elite soldiers in the world.

Indeed, they showed us the result of the force needed to crack a bare skull (without brains in it or tissue around, they even removed softer parts of bone)
You'd be suprised how much it takes to crack one.

Guns >>> Melee
Or atleast, how it should be.

That's how it will be. Melee seems more like a tool and not an actual tactic, which sits just right with me.

I dunno, might be quite effective to have a light player circle around during a big battle and slide tackle a few of the enemies, then get the hell out of dodge. But then again, you may be able to achieve something similar by knocking people over with grenades, so we shall see. Either way, in most FPS games, I have found that melee has purpose outside of "I'm out of ammo". And in Brink, you are able to slide tackle someone while still shooting at them, a tactic I plan to (ab)use.

I'm not saying it won't be useful; it undoubtedly will be very useful in some situations. Melee is definitely useful in FPS games, but its usually a spur of the moment action, not "I'm going to run over to that enemy ten meters away and rock him."
