What I don't understand is why everyone wants guns? they're in every like 80% of games! Part of the lure of TES series is it's alien and fantastical, and unlike, in every way, our modern times. Guns, weapons and other technological advances would pollute the game, and if it had guns, i would stop playing it.

No, this is not Fable. <_<

We all know how that turned out. Plain and simple no guns/gunpowder. Ever.

Why would anyone go through the long and painstaking process of inventing and producing a gun, when they could go through the slightly less long and painstaking process of learning projectile magic?

Yay, it's going to be Fallout with swords AND guns! Wait... isn't that already Fallout?

Seriously though, why? What would be the reason of having guns? If the only reason is because you think it makes sense because of how long after Oblivion it is your wrong. People should realize that it is futile to try to draw comparisons between our world and Nirn. Sure, Elder Scrolls draws a lot of inspiration from our world, but it sometimes defies our natural laws as well. Our timelines mean nothing compared to the timelines in Tamriel.

Now if you want it because you just like guns and think they would fit that's fine. But I can assure you there will be no guns in Skyrim. The developers are done with guns for now, they just want medieval and high fantasy weaponry (or so it seems anyway).

Screw levitation. Screw being a dragon rider. I want JET-PACKS, FTW!. I want to be able to ski up and down mountain slopes with a jet-pack. [/sarcasm]

While I actually like the idea of skiing/ snowboarding to get down mountain slopes faster (hold in the jump button?), some things just don't fit in TES (i.e. jet-packs).

Maybe some Medieval designs - but steampunkish (developed by mages and other inventive thinkers; very expensive and very rare). A few examples of how this could work:

Quick-reload crossbows
" " Ballistae
" " Trebuchets
Hidden blades in armour (Not like Assassin's Creed though)
At a push cannons
Still no guns

It might work in Tamriel, there are robots there after all, why not simpler things? Probably not so important, but I would like to see some steampunk wizards at least.

Snowboarding? Somebody mentioned http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/6384/campinga.png? Where do I sign up? I've got my broken slab of ice/shorn-off slab of wood ready to go!

I don't see guns, cars, or anything particularly considered "modern" showing up. I'd say the only game that did that exceedingly well was Arcanum, and that was based on a magic-vs-technology schema and in an Industrial Revolution. However, there's nothing to suggest that the integration of magic into technology wouldn't be a possibility... hey wait, isn't that called enchanting? What if my arrows can douse light sources from far away thanks to a cold spell? Or maybe they explode with fire or electricity? But what if I don't have access to magic? Can't I create a small glass arrowhead (so that it shatters) filled with water to do the same as the cold spell, a la Thief series?

We have lanterns, but they shed light in a circular pattern. Why can't someone add a cover with lenses on the inside to redirect the lighting in a conical array in front of me (bull's eye lantern) like a stationary lighthouse? Why can't I make smokebombs through careful alchemy? Better yet, why can't I throw corrosive substances at my enemies, or douse them in oil to set aflame later?

I personally think we need to utilize what we already have with a more dynamic system. Improvements can be made where they make sense and without getting ahead of ourselves. Do I expect to see these improvements in a time of turmoil? No, not necessarily, but there's always someone (wizards AND mundane craftspeople) out there with crazy ideas that might just work.

In TES4:Oblivion you already had guns. It was called a magic staff ;)

So no need for guns because of magic in my opinion.

No guns, who says the components of gunpowder even exist on Nirn. Maybe steam powered cannons for sieges, but the furthest I'd go would be billista.

In 125,000 years of human history we've only had guns since what? 700ish A.D? People need to stop rushing things geesh.

700 A.D.? Are you trolling?

At any rate, keep guns out of TES.

An empire just fell (compatible to the fall of Rome), and you think there's going to be BETTER technology?

If anything, it'd be a dark ages.

dude none of the firearm crap...at most cannons because cannons have been around forever. thats more primitive then the actual gun. at the very most!! but maybe they discover more advanced magic... u get to be one of those nords that yell... spells and crap...thats fuggin AWESOME.... or w/e race ur gonna be idk. maybe simple wooden and steam powered machinery. nothing too realistic. kind of like how the drewer had. wonder weapons and machines...but not too much advancement. it shuld still be swords and shields. armor and bows.

200 years isn't really that big of a time for any technological advancement, historically speaking... the 20th century is an anomaly in that regard, and we seem to be 'plateauing' in any case. thousands of years have passed with very little progress in the ways of technology. hell it took people millennia to get past 'sharp rocks'. so i don't expect anything significant. as others have pointed out, it would be more logical for things to get more primitive, since the empire collapsed. communications break down, resources are more scarce. centers of learning are disrupted/destroyed, etc.

Although it would be cool to see a few things like greek fire, or perhaps have the ability to hurl vials of poison and acid on enemies, etc., the process of technological development over time in a world like Tamriel, where mages can create electricity out of nothing, summon fantastical creatures to do their bidding and bend the laws of physics, would clearly favor alchemical and occult developments.

Things kinda stay static in Tamriel due to magic. Much like Middle-Earth.

And in the disputed amount of years in Human history we've only had magic since no time, while on Nirn they have had magic a long time. How about you stop comparing apples to oranges?

Given the Time differance of 200 years fromthe events of Oblivion, will they have discovered the powers of metallurgy and have made slightly more advanced projectile weapons e.g. Primitive Small Arms replacing Shortbows as well as Swords being the Primary and Early Cannons for Forts etc?

I doubt it. In human history, weaponry has usually take MANY centuries and even millenia to upgrade. The only time in human history where weaponry has advanced that quickly was in lately 19th century until the present. If guns get into Elder Scrolls I quit and I don't say that usually about games, and I especially don't say I'm going to quit Elder Scrolls but guns would be an instant quit. Fable could get away with it because it wasn't steeped in lore yet.

First guns real guns were in the 14th century. Also human history didn't start til ~3000 B.C. Humans have been around for at least a millions years due to recent fossil records.

As for comparing apples to oranges, how is it compared to that? Civilization can progress commonly no matter the geographical location (e.g look at all the civilizations across the world). Also it can halt completely because the very fact of magic. Why have firearms when you have magic. The people that created gunpowder in real life where chinese alchemists looking for immortality and all the alchemists in TES know magic so why would they give non-magic users the power to fight them but yeah lol.

There's no point for any real technological advancement on Nirn. Why spend resources on medical research when alchemy or restoration magic can cure your ailments with relatively no repercussions. Guns would become ineffective when magistrates would learn how to enchant armor to deflect damage (Which might even just be a reflect physical damage enchant). or terms of entertainment there are a lot of things, such as exploring, doing tasks for guilds, or entering one's pictures.

[Blantant Sarcasm]It's great to see people keeping an open mind and not just throwing out an idea when they first hear it...[/Blatant Sarcasm]
I'm not talking to anybody who is giving a valid argument, just to the people who are just saying "No" and not providing any reason.

They may, but I don't think it's likely, seeing as apparently it is going to be primative (I just heard about that on this thread, and I have no reason. I think it would be pretty cool if there are a few [[i]u]basic[/u][/i] cannons protecting a town.

I don't think it would be very good if they did guns like Fable, but maybe give them a very small role

I don't know exactly how it would/should be implemented, but I wouldn't trash the idea immediately.

Or like somebody else said...
Perhaps a easter egg/side quest where you help a mad alchemist invent gunpowder but he accidentally blows himself up at the end of it.

I think that would be funny.
