Will they have advanced in weapon technology?

Post » Fri Oct 29, 2010 5:40 pm

Given the Time differance of 200 years fromthe events of Oblivion, will they have discovered the powers of metallurgy and have made slightly more advanced projectile weapons e.g. Primitive Small Arms replacing Shortbows as well as Swords being the Primary and Early Cannons for Forts etc?

It′s a fantasy world. I think chronology has no effect on technology advancement.

The elder scrolls universe doesn't work the same way as ours does so not likely.

To explain that, guns caught on in the real world because they were more effective means of war in trained hands. In Tamriel, even if someone were to invent guns they would never see wide use and eventually stop being made because they would not be as effective due to the way wars are fought and culture advances in a society where your physics is literally magic. Guns have no place in the elder Scrolls because, despite most people's squandering of the genre, fantasy worlds do not follow the same cultural and societal routes as ours did, does and will.

Well, since one of the improvements in game are the mechanics on BOWS, we can assume guns will not be in the game.

Also, I think they know better than to make what I assume is 87% of their fanbase rage for months on end concerning the subject.

The Empire has collapsed. Tamriel's infrastructure is in shambles. Skyrim was always kind of a backwards place in any case.

If anything, weapons "technology" will be slightly less advanced, or at least less widespread.

I can deal with Crossbows as weapons and Cannons on towers. Guns? Not so much.

This. Some extremely basic projectile weapons were invented by the Dwemer, but Metallurgy and Gunpowder don't work the same way in our world as they do in Nirn. I'm not even sure if the latter exists.

Considering Tamriel hasn't had many technological advancements in thousands of years, I doubt it.

There were dwemer satchel charges in Tribunal.
So at least some kind of explosive material exists.

Still. No guns. Not now, not ever.

The Romans were pretty advanced, but when their empire fell most of that advancement was lost for hundreds of years.
Skyrim is set in a kind of Dark Age for Tamriel, if were relating this to history the weapons should be more primitive not more advanced

I, personally, would like blasting powder. Not guns, but blasting powder. It would make for a whole new dynamic. You could build trap bombs and lure your enemies into them. You could make exploding arrows. You could create grenades (I'm talking the old kind. You know, a black iron ball filled with powder and a fuse). It would make for some very interesting playstyles.

Establised societies, as in city and nations, have only been around for around 10,000 years before that we were not much more than wondering normads(hardly capable of meaningful advancement).

Yes, there were.

Did they use gunpowder, though? I don't think there was any mention of how they were made and, honestly, I'd just assume right off the bat that Bethesda (and the Dwemer, from a lore perspective) would be more creative than that.

And yeah, I agree. Guns would ruin TES.
